Importing and exporting of chemical con-taining clinker from Darba siding near therailway station Chandigarh is spreadingpoison in the area around the clinker sta-tion, but the railways is not concernedabout it. Railways say that this stationwas built in 1950 and since then the workof import and export of goods on this sid-ing is going on, this poisonous clinkerwill come and go in this way. Ironically, the Pollution Control Board has also beensilent on this gruesome problem. Citizensof the residential areas around the railwaystation say that during unloading of theclinker, its chemical is poisoning the en-vironment and its citizens are sufferingfrom different kinds of diseases. Citizensaround the station have also made the ad-ministration aware of the hazards throughthe media, but no attention has been paid. The railway department is overcomingthis problem by saying that the depart-

ment has taken permission for import andexport of goods from the siding and thiswork will continue. On the other hand, the pollution control department is show-ing complete indifference towards it. Ac-cording to the provisions of the NGT, inthe event of increase in pollution on rail-way siding, there is an order to stop theloading and unloading of such clinker etc.even though the pollution control Board, despite exposing and vigorously keepingthe matter of pollution spread by com-mon citizens, there is no hearing. An at-tempt was made to talk to the officials ofChandigarh Pollution Control Board re-garding this problem. A woman officeralso received phone on the landline num-ber, but she avoided the callers by sayingthat the person discharging this responsi-bility can be talked on another number. The woman officer gave a number, butdespite repeated calls to that number, noanswer was received. The phone kept dis-connecting, when the bell rang. There hasbeen a repeated demand by citizens to

stop import of clinker from the aviary sid-ing near Chandigarh railway station withimmediate effect, but unfortunately thereis no one to listen to this serious problem. Now the question is, how and who willsolve this terrible problem of the citizensliving around Chandigarh railway sta-tion?

Non-compliance of NGT's order re-stricting movement of goods trains incase of pollution being uncontrolled

Strict instructions have been issuedby the NGT regarding pollution controlthat if pollution increases then the move-ment of goods trains on the concernedrailway side will be stopped with imme-diate effect, but this order is not being fol-lowed in Chandigarh. The work of un-loading poisonous clinkers and loadingthem in trucks continues on the Chandi-garh Railway side. Aware citizens saythat there is a huge irregularity in empty-ing goods from goods trains. Any goodsthat come on the side like coal and clink-er etc. are dropped from the rack once and

left on track for several days, then loadedin trucks and transported to the destina-tion. For several days, cement, coal, clinker lie on the railway track and pollu-tion continues. The clinker used in themanufacture of cement contains extreme-ly harmful chemicals. Here comes a rackfull of clinkers for the manufacture of ce-ment on the railway siding and from here, trucks are sent to the cement factories. While clinker and sand fly during un-loading from racks and loading in trucks, the atmosphere is polluted by its blowingeven while carrying overloading intrucks. While emptying the rack, consid-erable sand and clinker blows andspreads pollution. At the same time, theclinker flies again after loading the emp-ty goods from the rack in trucks. This hasproved to be completely poisonousaround 5 km radius around the railwaystation. While thousands of citizens areliving in this area, due to pollutionspreading from clinker, people are facingdiseases related to lungs etc. The pollu-

tion control department and the traffic de-partment have been silent on this issue.Aware citizens say that there is adminis-trative complicity in this irregularity fromsomewhere. The cement factories aroundChandigarh want their profits to continueand import export of clinker on the avia-tion siding is perhaps the result of irre-sponsible attitude of the pollution controlboard. There is a demand by the con-scious citizens that in view of the in-creasing pollution, a ban should be im-posed on the clinker at the Chandigarhrailway site with immediate effect.

This is the statement of the railwaySuperintendent of Chandigarh RailwayStation, Anil Agarwal.

He said that the railways has alreadyreceived permission for import and ex-port of goods like clinker from aviary sid-ing. A clinker's freight train arrives justonce a month. The clinker does notcome here, it goes from here, and thework will continue till any further ordercomes.

Railways want business, unconcerned with clinker spreading poison in the airPollution Control Board indifferent, chemical filled clinker being unloaded on railway siding causing diseases

The latest case is related to the vil-lage Sangoha- Sangohi where excavationis being done by the mafia. The mafia lurevillagers with money. Nearly 8 to 10 feetof soil digging work is being done near theroad from Sangoha to Churni. On the roadleading from Sangohi to Dard village, about 10 feet of soil is being dug up fromthe side of the road, due to which this roadhas been broken earlier and is still crack-ing in the rain. But the marketing boardand PWD department are also not awareof this.

The soil mafia takes permission forthe digging from the office. If the permis-sion is of 2 feet deep, then the soil is dugup to 4 feet. After permission of one place, soil is being dug up from two places. Soilfrom farmers is being sold at very highprices. After the strictures on sand mining, the soil mafia is executing this type ofgame on a large scale. When the officialsleave for a raid on the soil mining mafia, they get prior information about this fromthe sources, due to which they escapefrom this action. When the matter was

talked to Kuldeep, JCB operator who ismining the soil, he said that they have an8-foot digging permit and there is no lawmade which could prevent him from giv-ing permission or stop his machine.

When the matter was discussed withthe District Mining Officer Rajesh Sang-wan, he said that he has and wil;l check. He said strict action will be taken againstthose who do so. He reached the spot andtook stock of the situation. He said thatpermission is in four locations in Sangohavillage. But no permission has been givento Sangohi village and so action will betaken on digging the soil from there. Peo-ple are facing a lot of trouble due to thepoor condition of roads which are crack-ing as a result.

FIR registered by Rhea Chakraborty illegal, contempt of SC's orders: Vikas Singh

NEW DELHI, SEP 8

The FIR registered at Bandrapolice station by actor RheaChakraborty is "clearlyillegal and contempt of theSupreme Court's orders",said Vikas Singh, lawyer ofRajput's father on Tuesday.

Singh said he will takestrong action to ensure thatthe FIR, which namesRajput's sister PriyankaSingh, Dr Tarun Kumar ofRML Hospital, Delhi andothers under various sectionsof the IPC, and NarcoticDrugs and PsychotropicSubstances (NDPS) Act, doesnot deflect the trials inanother direction. "The FIR,which has been registered isclearly illegal and clearly acontempt of the orders of theSC. The SC had very clearlysaid that if the Mumbai

police as part of its inquestproceedings come acrosssome cognisable offence inthe death of Sushant then thatcould be referred to CBI,"Singh told reporters here."We will take strong action toassure the accused doesn'tsucceed in deflecting the trialinto another direction to saveherself and to ensure the lawdoesn't take its full course,"he added. The lawyer saidthat the FIR registered wasclearly a contempt of theSupreme Court's orders on

three grounds. Two of those, according to Singh, areearlier judgements of theSupreme Court in other caseswhile the third was "the spiritof the judgement in RheaChakraborty's case." Hefurther alleged that theBandra police station seemedto be like a "second home"for Chakraborty by stating,"The FIR has been registeredas if to oblige the accused, because sections of the IPCand the NDPS Act have beenused liberally, without even

looking into the content ofthe complaint made by RheaChakraborty.

This whole attemptappears to be somehow tohelp the accused and todeflect the investigation in adirection so that the accusedgets some benefit." Earliertoday, the Mumbai police hadsaid that it was transferringthe case registered on thebasis of Chakraborty'scomplaint to the CBI. In hercomplaint to the BandraPolice Station, Chakrabortyhad stated that Priyanka Singhhad sent Rajput a prescriptionby Dr Tarun Kumar and he"appears to have prescribedmedication controlled underNarcotic Drugs andPsychotropic SubstancesAct, 1985 to Sushantwithout any consultation asmandated by law."

No power on earth can segregateArunachal from India: BJD MP AcharyaNEW DELHI, SEP 8

No power on earth can segregateArunachal Pradesh from India andChina must know it, said Biju Janta Dal(BJD) leader Prasanna Acharyacondemning the Chinese ForeignMinistry spokesperson Zhao Lijian'sstatement that China has neverrecognised the region and claimed it tobe "part of China's south Tibet region'."

the Rajya Sabha MP from Odishasaid that there was no question ofhaving a discussion with China andIndia should stand firm on its resolve.

"As regards Arunachal Pradesh,China has repeatedly said that they donot recognise Arunachal as part ofIndian territory, this is an old story. Theworld community has recognizedArunachal Pradesh as an integral part ofIndia. It is astonishing why China isrepeatedly denying reality," Acharyasaid. Acharya also expressed concernsover the incident of firing taking placeat the Line of Actual Control (LAC) inthe eastern Ladakh sector.

"No doubt this is an unfortunateescalation attempt by the ChinesePeoples Liberation Army (PLA) and Ithink this is a clear indication of what isgoing to happen in the coming days. Therefore, the Indian government andArmy have to remain alert on theborder," he said. "I personally believethat we should not have confidence onthe talks made by the Chinesegovernment on the negotiation table, because in the past whenever such anagreement has been arrived at, in thenext 24 to 48 hours China has violatedit. We must be very careful and alert, wehave full confidence in the bravery ofour Armed Forces," Acharya added.

RJD reminds BJP of its'negligence' towards

migrant workers in BiharPATNA: After BJP launched a campaign in Bihar'Na bhoole hai, Na bhulne denge' seeking justicefor late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, the RashtriyaJanata Dal (RJD) has hit out at the rival party, targetting it for its negligence towards migrantworkers amid COVID-19.

RJD, in a translated tweet, said, " Neitherforgotten nor will let we let anyone forget! Withthe tricks of diverting focus; will not let you forgetthe real issues!" Along with this tweet, RJD has putout four pictures similar to the stickers and postersbearing late actor Sushant Singh Rajput's photosreleased by the BJP.

One of these pictures read with translated textread, "How you (BJP) left over 40 lakh populationof Bihar to die. #WeWillNotForget." "With thehelp of police, labourers were lathi-charged duringCorona," read another picture by RJD.

Wild and unabashedly outrageous, a little far outin its brazen attempt to exploit the voter’s sen-timent as son of the soil, the BJP’s improbable

“Justice for Sushant” campaign, launched ahead of theelections to the Bihar legislative Assembly, invites themedia today to a spot of introspection. The media isguilty of according the death of Bollywood actorSushant Singh Rajput too much priority. To this end, ithas blithely allowed itself to play into the hands of po-litical lobbies that quickly converted the coverage into arunning skirmish between the ruling party at the Centreand the Opposition-led Maharashtra government. Hun-gry for TRPs, the media remained oblivious. Rigour, duediligence and facts were tossed to the winds in the courseof a media trial, masquerading as an investigation. As floods raged through Bihar, alongside Coronavirusand recession, the big media invisibilised the sufferingsof the poor and the marginalised. The post-truth mediawas shy of putting governments on the mat. The socialmedia fostered echo chambers; cancel culture, andtrolling and real life stalking of ones with uncomfortableviews. But the cardinal sin committed by the media wastrying to reverse-engineer the tastes of its audience andin so doing it underestimated it, badly. The masses areintelligent. They do not enjoy an exact overlap with theclasses to which the journalist aspires to belong likeevery other middle class citizen. But they vote out gov-ernments. They have sections that are semi-literate andthey also comprise minds that are not influential but arefar more educated than the journalist themselves. Themasses may be entertained by melodrama and kitsch butthey know how to distinguish between news and enter-tainment. Sometimes, they knowingly opt for the latter. At other times, they do so in the former’s absence. Butto perpetrate their particulate frauds, journalists were en-couraged to buy into the toxic middle class culture of mi-sogyny, shame, fear and fascination of “drugs” and var-ious “nobler than thou” tribalisms that coexist as cogni-tive dissonances, indeed neuroses, in people’s psychesand milk them no end. It was surprising how the jour-nalist of a television channel kept steering the conversa-tion away to the topic of drugs even after RheaChakraborty dropped repeated clear hints about SushantSingh being stressed out about the possibility of a“#MeToo-type allegation” prior to his death.Chakraborty has just been interrogated by the CBI andthis adds to her statements new weight. It is also sur-prising how large sections of the media gave zero cur-rency to the possibility that Sushant Singh’s death mighthave been the result of a suicide.

Literature & HealthGene test can predict risk of

medications causing liver injuryScientists who were working on a

way to determine the viability ofbatches of tiny liver organoids have

discovered a testing method that mayhave far broader implications. They dis-covered a gene test that can possibly pre-dict the risk of medications that cause liv-er injury. Their study published in thejournal Nature Medicine reports identify-ing a "polygenic risk score" that showswhen a drug, be it an approved medica-tion or an experimental one, poses a riskof drug-induced liver injury (DILI).

The work was conducted by a con-sortium of scientists from CincinnatiChildren's, Tokyo Medical and DentalUniversity, Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. inJapan, and several other research centresin Japan, Europe and the US. The find-ings take a large step toward solving aproblem that has frustrated drug develop-ers for years.

"So far we have had no reliable wayof determining in advance whether amedication that usually works well inmost people might cause liver injuryamong a few," says Jorge Bezerra, MD,Director, Division of Gastroenterology,Hepatology and Nutrition at CincinnatiChildren's. "That has caused a number ofpromising medications to fail during clin-ical trials, and in rare cases, also cancause serious injury from approved med-ications. If we could predict which indi-viduals would be most at-risk, we couldprescribe more medications with moreconfidence," says Bezerra, who was notinvolved with the study. Now that reliabletest might be just around the corner. "Our

genetic score will potentially benefit peo-ple directly as a consumer diagnostic-likeapplication, such as 23andMe and others.People could take the genetic test andknow their risk of developing DILI," sayscorresponding author Takanori Takebe,MD, an organoid expert at CincinnatiChildren's who has been studying ways togrow liver "buds" for large-scale use inresearch. The team developed the riskscore by re-analysing hundreds ofgenome-wide association studies(GWAS) that had identified a long list ofgene variants that might indicate a likeli-hood of a poor reaction in the liver to var-ious compounds. By combining the dataand applying several mathematicalweighting methods, the team found a for-mula that appears to work.

- The risk score takes more than20,000 gene variants into account.

- The team confirmed the score's pre-diction power in cell culture, in organoidtissue and by using patient genomic dataalready on file.

Anoted scholar and ex-pert on Asian affairshas raised concerns

over the gross human rightsviolations in Xinjiang and Ti-bet as he alleges that China'sCommunity regime embez-zles the COVID-19 crisis tomuzzle the voice of dissents.

Dr Burzine Waghmar,Staff of SOAS University ofLondon was interacting withTsering Passang, ConvenerGlobal Alliance for Tibet andPersecuted Minorities on the9th Black Day Anniversary ofChen Quanguo's appointmentto the mastermind of Tibetanatrocities and Uyghur geno-cide.

On August 28, a protestoutside the United Nationsoffice in London was held tomark the anniversary of theappointment of party secre-tary, Chen Quanguo, on hisfour years completion as par-ty secretary in XinjiangUyghur Autonomous Regionfrom 2016 to 2020.

And before that, from2011 to 2016 he was a partysecretary of the Tibet Au-tonomous Region. "We allknow what he has done in Ti-bet and what he has been do-ing in east Turkistan," saidTsering. Xinjiang or EastTurkistan as it is known to itsindigenous inhabitants, the

Uyghurs, is on China's West-ernmost front which borderseight countries. The home to12 million Uyghurs and otherethnic minorities, Xinjiang isstrategically significant forthe politburo and ChineseCommunist Party.

"Not just Uyghur as a lan-guage, but any and everytrace of Islamic identity iscrushed in order to robotical-ly reprogram them as HanChinese citizens. And thesechildren have been dislocat-ed, removed, forcibly takenfrom their parents and theirfathers are practically dead or

disappeared for all we knowand their mothers have practi-cally become a concubine forHan Chinese man", said Dr.Burzine.

He added, "It is no exag-geration, there is nothing sen-sationalist or melodramatic inpointing that out. It reallymust be driven home. It is notxenophobic to point that outas well. I need to point thatout too because it is all verywell to say that the world isout to get China during thecurrent COVID-19 crisis andthat we have seen outbreaksof xenophobia which in itself

are regrettable and must bechallenged. True, but thatought not to be an excuse forcondoning what the Chinesehave been doing pre-COVID-19 too. So, xenophobia sim-ply does not explain the ac-tions of the Communist par-ty's murderous regime, im-plementation policies acrossXinjiang, and Tibet."

Dr Burzine said, "Thehundred-plus odd nationali-ties or ethnic minorities thatare part of the PRC (People'sRepublic of China), withinwhich we have Uyghurs andTibetans are all considered

well by Marxist, Leninist, evolutionary social thinkingas lesser citizens. Now, thisisn't given, regardless of whatleftist progressive like to pa-rade and the Maoist thoughtin this case, taking a cue fromMarxist Leninism, that all cit-izens are equal and that werun an egalitarian society, well anything but that be-cause according to the Maoistand Chinese communist par-ty, the Han Chinese individ-ual is first amongst equals asthe citizens of the PRC. Hematters and not just that he isthe default category of whatan ideal Chinese citizenought to be and that Tibetans,Uyghurs among other minori-ties, who are shall we say lesscivilised ethno-socially, cul-turally and politically oughtto emulate. Within that con-text, lies the politics of exclu-sivism. We cannot deny that",said the scholar.

When asked about forcedorgan harvesting of Uyghur,Dr. Burzine, "Hair and bodysamples have been found tak-en from Uyghur too which iswhy I brought in the Nazi fac-tor that Nazi's used to takehair samples from Jews inAuschwitz, Treblinka, andother death camps and collectthem for making wigs andbody fats were taken from

Jews and other decedents toproduce soap. So my analogywith Nazis is neither blaringnor erroneous. I do back upwhat I say. Because this iswhat the CCP is doing inXinxiang too with Uyghurbody parts".

It is estimated that around1 million Uyghurs have beenforcibly detained by the Chi-nese government in a wide-spread network of prison-likefacilities.

Chinese authorities callthe detention camps "voca-tional training centres" andsay their detention efforts areaimed at combating terrorismand extremism, but the evi-dent repression of Uyghurshas been condemned interna-tionally.

"The PRC has hijackedthe global war on terrorwhich is an otherwise entire-ly serious genuine trans-na-tional operation since Octo-ber 2001 and operation en-during freedom which was toget to Al-Qaeda, which hascreated murder and Mayhemand Afghanistan was just astate and a name but al Qaedastaging posts for terror but theChinese have jumped on tothat Bandwagon and decidedto eliminate any oppositionbut particularly targeting theUyghurs.

Picture this mood setter:It's a cool April eveningon the banks of the East

Lake in Wuhan. The year is2018, some months after atesting standoff in Doklam,Bhutan, between Indian andChinese troops. NarendraModi and Xi Jinping are lis-tening to the dulcet notes ofancient Chinese string instru-ments and flutes playing asweet Bollywood hit of yes-teryear.

By the time the music setsthe mood, the two leadershave taken a stroll by the EastLake without their official del-egations in tow, have sat in ahouseboat, without their dele-gations, partaken of Chinesetea, teased only by the gentlelakeside breezes. The song the

Chinese musicians are playingwith elegance, plucking pear-shaped lutes, zithers, blowingmelodiously on Chineseflutes, is a carefully chosenKishore Kumar-Asha Bhonsleduet which goes

Mil jaye is tarahdo lehrein jis tarahphir na hona judahan yeh vaada rahanIt is a song where two

lovers pledge never to sepa-rate.

This song helped definethe so-called “Wuhan Spirit”.Later the following year, inMamallapuram (or Mahabs,as it is locally known) nearChennai, in another informalsummit setting, which is tosay, without the rigidity of of-ficial positions, Xi was to tell

the media, looking as pleasedas a fat Chinese cat that hadjust tasted its favourite cream, that he had “heart to heart dis-cussions” with Modiji on bi-lateral matters. This heart toheart moment was branded byspinmeisters as the “ChennaiConnect”. What the formalcommunications were toclaim later, after both thesemutually rewarding meetings, where each leader much betterunderstood the other’s strate-gic perspectives on a range ofissues, reveal as much as theyconceal. But Modiji was to de-clare with much satisfaction:“The first informal summitbetween India and China lastyear in Wuhan led to fresh sta-bility in our relations and gavea fresh momentum. Strategic

communication between ourtwo countries has also in-creased. The Wuhan summitinstilled a new momentumand trust in our relations andtoday’s ‘Chennai Connect’ isthe start of a new era in India-China relations.”

Significantly, Xi Jinpingsaid that such informal sum-mits have helped “initiate dis-cussions on many issues” andhe was happy that Modi hadmooted the idea. So we knowwhose idea it was, these one-on-ones to better understandthe other. That the Chinese re-sponded, and that after 18meetings between Modiji andXi Jinping, the comfort of“strategic communication”has entered the lexicon ofdiplomacy.

Wuhan and the garden of false expectations

The active ingredientsfound in sunscreenhave detrimental effects

on freshwater ecosystems, ac-cording to new research byUniversity of Alberta biolo-gists,

Results of the researchwere published in the journalScience of the Total Environ-ment. The results show thatlong-term exposure to ultravi-olet (UV) filters--includingavobenzone, oxybenzone, and octocrylene--is lethal forsome organisms living infreshwater environments. One of the largest sources ofUV-filter contamination inboth marine and freshwaterenvironments is from sun-

screen leaching off of the skinwhile swimming. "We doknow that UV-filters are par-ticularly devastating to coralreefs and cause bleaching, butthere has been almost no re-search on what the effects areto freshwater animals," ex-plained Aaron Boyd, a gradu-ate student in the Departmentof Biological Sciences and

lead author on the paper. "Toaddress this, we examined theeffects of UV-filters in thewater flea, Daphnia magna."

The results show that ex-posure to UV-filters over a48-hour period prevented thefleas from navigating throughtheir environment. Exposureover a 14-day period--similarto what might occur near pop-

ular beach areas--provedlethal for the tiny crustaceans.

"This is particularly badfor a freshwater ecosystem asa whole, as Daphnia are animportant part of the foodchain for many smallerspecies of fish," added Boyd, who completed this researchin collaboration with graduatestudent Connor Stewart, un-der the supervision of Assis-tant Professor TamzinBlewett and Professor KeithTierney. "Losing a Daphniapopulation would put all ofthe species that rely on themat risk of starvation, and incertain conditions couldcause the local ecosystem tocollapse."

Probiotic supplements, when taken alongside acalorie-controlled diet,

may help children and adoles-cents with obesity lose weight, according to new research. The study, being presented ate-ECE 2020, found that obesechildren who were put on acalorie-restricted diet and giv-en probiotics Bifidobacteriumbreve BR03 and Bifidobacteri-um breve B632, lost moreweight and had improved in-sulin sensitivity comparedwith children on a diet only.

These findings suggestthat probiotic supplements anda calorie-controlled diet mayhelp manage obesity in theyounger population and re-duce future health risks, suchas heart disease and diabetes.Obesity is a global health con-cern and can lead to a numberof life-threatening conditions, such as diabetes and heart dis-ease. Treatment and preven-tion is a serious public healthchallenge, especially in chil-dren and adolescents. Bifi-dobacteria are a group of pro-biotic bacteria that are part ofthe natural gut microbiomeand help with preventing in-fection from other bacteria, such as E.coli, and digestion ofcarbohydrates and dietaryfiber. During digestion, they

release chemicals called short-chain fatty acids, which playan important role in gut healthand controlling hunger. Lownumbers of Bifodobacteriamay impair digestion, affectfood intake and energy expen-diture, leading to body weightgain and obesity. Previousstudies suggested that probiot-ic supplementation with Bifi-dobacteria could help restorethe composition of the gut mi-crobiome, which may aidweight loss and could be a po-tential approach for obesitymanagement. However, cur-rent research uses mixtures ofdifferent strains of probioticsand does not examine the ef-fects of administering Bifi-dobacteria alone. Dr Flavia

Prodam and her team at theUniversity of Piemonte Orien-tale aimed to assess the impactof Bifidobacteria probiotictreatment in children and ado-lescents with obesity on a con-trolled diet, on weight loss, and gut microbiota composi-tion. 100 obese children andadolescents (6-18 years) wereput on a calorie-controlled dietand randomly given eitherprobiotics Bifidobacteriumbreve BR03 and Bifidobacteri-um breve B632, or a placebofor 8 weeks. Clinical, bio-chemical, and stool sampleanalyses were carried out todetermine the effect of probi-otic supplementation onweight gain, gut microbiota, and metabolism.

(CVD) risk. Heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of the fluctuation in time intervals between consecutive heartbeats, is an important indicator of the cardiovascular system’s response to stress and it is thought that lifestyle factors including physical activity and diet might impact HRV. Higher HRV represents greater adaptability of the heart in response to environmental and psychological challenges, while low HRV is linked to cardiovascular disease and sudden cardiac death. As part of a recent clinical trial, researchers at King’s College London measured HRV in participants undergoing a mental stress challenge and saw improved measures of HRV in participants who had been replacing typical snacks with almonds over a six-week period. The study was funded by the Almond Board of California. This new research finding was part of the ATTIS study, a 6-week randomized control, parallel-arm trial, where participants with above average cardiovascular disease risk consumed a daily snack.

GLAMOURGLAMOURAYUSHMANN hails Berlin Film Festival's announcement to keep

awards gender-neutralctor Ayushmann Khurrana on Monday lauded the Berlin Film Festival's decision to keep its performance awards gender-Aneutral from next year. "I, wholeheartedly, laud the Berlin Film

Festival's decision to award gender-neutral recognitions and I hope all film festivals across the world and India follow suit. We are all actors at the end of the day and gender divisions only highlight the long prevalent divisive nature of societies," he said. "Thus, it is important that gender-neutral awards should become the norm when it comes to adjudicating the best work in a year," Khurrana added. Khurrana feels films and film-stars can do their bit constantly to have such relevant conversations in a bid to achieve gender parity in society. "Gender divisions are too deep-rooted and the film industry can really do their bit to champion change. Gendered awards, according to me, are totally outdated and should be scrapped," the 'Vicky Donor' actor said. He went on to plead to all award fun ctions in India to take the inevitable

trend seriously. "I seriously hope all award functions in India take a step in the right direction and do what is the most obvious thing towards having a more progressive society. For me, good performances are good performances and they should be seen without the gender lens," he said. The world-renowned Berlin Film Festival had earlier last month

decided that its performance awards will be gender-

neutral for next year's edition. The festival said

that instead of bestowing the best male actor and the best female actor, they will bestow the best leading performer.

Fitch lowers India FY21 GDP forecast to minus 10.5 per centAGENCYMUMBAI, SEP 8

Fitch Ratings has sharply loweredits forecast for India's grossdomestic product (GDP) growthfor the current fiscal year (FY21)and expects it to contract by 10.5per cent as compared to its earlierestimate of 5 per cent contraction.

Multiple challenges areholding back the recovery both inthe short and medium-term, itsaid in its latest Global EconomicOutlook. New cases of thecoronavirus continue to increase, forcing some states and union

territories to re-tightenrestrictions, though theselocalised containment measuresare generally less stringent thanin March and April. "Thecontinued spread of the virus andthe imposition of sporadicshutdowns across the countrydepress sentiment and disrupteconomic activity," said Fitch. The severe fall in activity has alsodamaged household andcorporate incomes and balancesheets amid limited fiscalsupport. A looming deteriorationin asset quality in the financialsector will hold back credit

provision amid weak bank capitalbuffers. Besides, said Fitch, highinflation has added strains tohousehold income. Supply-chaindisruptions and excise dutiesincreases have caused prices torise. "However, we expect

inflation to slow amid weakunderlying demand, an easing insupply-chain disruptions and agood monsoon."

Fitch said the GDP shouldrebound strongly in Q3 2020amid a re-opening of theeconomy but there are signs thatthe recovery has been sluggishand uneven. The PMI balanceshave bounced back but theyimply that the level of activity isstill well below its pre-pandemiclevel in Q3. Still-depressedlevels of imports, two-wheelersales and capital goodsproduction indicate a muted

recovery in domestic spending. InQ2, India recorded one of thesharpest GDP contractions in theworld. GDP shrank a staggering24 per cent year-on-year -- almostdouble Fitch's expectationembedded in the June GlobalEconomic Outlook -- amid theimposition of one of the moststringent global nationwidelockdowns. All demandcomponents except governmentconsumption fell massively in thequarter. Private consumption lostmore than 27 per cent quarter-on-quarter while investmentslumped by 43 per cent.
