tax on both the Stark andHadrick homes. For old business, there was a

change order request of $892from Dahme’s. The pay requestsconsisted of Helms & Assoc. for$750; the on-site manager for$34,154 and to Dahme Construc-tion for $298,691.46.Raethz updated the council on

the sewer project. He stated thatabout seven blocks are left to dig.He said that Dahme’s have a cou-ple of months left for seeding, street prep and to cut off thepipes.A pay request for the airport

environmental assessment for$5,153.95 was approved. The citywill see 95% reimbursement forthis. It was approved for Helms &

Associates land acquisition as-sistance agreement for $25,000.It is an agreement to possiblypurchase land, appraisals, etc.from landowners. Their letter ofagreement was approved.Next on the agenda was to re-

visit the Economic Developmentfunding. At the July councilmeeting a motion was made, sec-onded and passed to allow

$10,000 to the Economic Devel-opment Corp.Councilman Ramsdell noted

that not funding the programmay cause the ongoing projectsto “go south” and he does notwant to see that happen. “Whatcould happen down the road ifwe don’t have some money setaside for economic development? The elevator and the museummurals have brought in manyvisitors already. This is revenuefor businesses and sales tax forthe city. If we don’t fund eco-nomic development somehow, fu-ture projects probably will notwork.”Business owner Dave Hedt

stated that no he is not a mem-ber of the city council or the de-velopment corporation, howeverhe is a business owner. He saidthat the retail center would notbe here if not for the help ofTrevor and the economic devel-opment corporation. He has notasked for money from the city forthe center, or for Guido’s murals. The murals are funded by twogrants, local donations, and vol-unteer help. If the developmentcorporation does slip away it willbe very hard to start up again.Remember the things they have

done and the projects that are “inthe works”.This week there will be three

more newspapers coming toFaulkton and two more televi-sion stations coming to do storieson the mural. Hedt noted thatBrim Australia has seen an in-crease in revenue of 3.4 milliondollars after their murals werecompleted.Troy Hadrick, acting president

of the Development Corp. askedthe council, “Look to where wewant to be in the future.” Henoted that we all need to work to-gether and move forward for allof us.Trevor Cramer stated that it

has been fun being part of theteam and making the communitybetter. On a “plan B” he is will-ing to work part time. Cramernoted that at all of the meetingshe attend, Faulkton is noted as a“rising star” and is held up byother communities.Kelly Melius then addressed

the council stating “Who willwork for $10,000?” He noted thatthey have applied for a grant tohelp fund the director’s salary, and will know whether they re-ceived the grant, in the near fu-ture. He stated we need to have aplan soon and let Trevor planahead. He noted “We all have thesame goal, we need to have aplan that we can all agree on.”Dave Speck commented that

what happens if the town getssmaller? Are we getting too bigtoo fast? Who decides on who ison the development board. Speckwould like to see the city havemore input on the developmentmeetings.Jody Moritz replied that the

development board members arevoted on at their yearly meeting. If you want to vote on who goeson the development board, go tothe meeting.Discussion was held and

Mayor Roseland stated thatthere needs to be a board madeup of councilmen and develop-ment members. It was statedthat Roseland, Emily Bauer,Steve Wanner and Chris Geigerwill form the committee alongwith the Development Corp. whowill decide on who will be on the

committee from their board. Adecision needs to be made byNov. 1 as to the director’s posi-tion. “There is no reason why wecan’t come up with something,”he said.Chris Geiger, Steve Wanner,

Mark Toennies and Sheila Fis-cher all stated that yes some-thing needs to be decided on, andsoon. It was agreed to all sitdown to work together andmaybe more money can be bud-geted. This needs to be ironedout now so this does not happenevery year.Councilman Ramsdell stated

that with just the two new homesbrought to town the city has seenover $10,000 in revenue, withthe moving the homes, here, theplumbing, electrical wiring, etc. Those homes brought in thatmuch revenue, and all we didwas give that back to the devel-opment corporation last month.A roll call vote was taken to in-

crease the amount another$10,000, then retracted as themotion was not correct. After a little discussion and

clarification a new motion wasmade by Ramsdell and secondedby Toennies to budget an addi-tional $10,000 to economic devel-opment with a caveat that thecity and development corpora-tion meet to finalize a plan byNov. 1. All voted aye by a roll callvote with Linda Bartholomewabstaining. For new business Jody Moritz

read what will be on a sign at themuseum near the new buffalomural and asked the council forpermission to place the sign. Therequest was approved. The 2019 budget/appropria-

tions ordinance #45 was read forthe first reading and approved. For the 2018 audit report, fi-

nance officer Bauer requestedanother set of eyes on the report,as asked by the state. It was alsonoted to update Capital assets toinclude the new sewer project.Moving permits were approved

for Vista One Real Estate - at1205 Oak Street - house near thehospital; and the Faulkton AreaEconomic Development Corp.,1502 St. John Street - house atWest Side, and both were ap-

proved.A temporary liquor license

was approved for J & J Bar forSept. 15 at the Community Cen-ter for a wedding reception. Two brown bag permits were

also approved for FAMC Aug. 18at Faulkton City Park for theiremployee picnic; and for a Sept.7 wedding reception at theFaulkton Legion Hall by FalynHogg. It was decided that the next

Sufficient Grace“My grace is sufficient for you.” 2 CORINTHIANS 12:9

The prayer of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane is perhapsthe greatest, most moving prayer ever uttered. In it our Lord askedthat the cup of crucifixion, which was about to be thrust upon Him,might be taken away. But then, in the very next breath He said,“Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39).What a prayer! What strength! What power! When the apostle Paul asked God to remove his “thorn in the

flesh,” God did not remove it, saying instead, “My grace is suffi-cient for you.” Rather than complain or become angry at God, Pauljoyfully submitted to God’s will. He discovered that God’s gracetruly was sufficient, even in the midst of pain.Christ desires to be with you in whatever crisis you may find

yourself. Call upon His name. See if He will not do as He prom-ised He would. He may not make your problems go away, but Hewill give you the power to deal with them and to overcome themby His grace.Hope for Today: If we only pray for the removal of problems, we

will often be disappointed. If we pray for God’s presence in themidst of our problems, we will always receive what we have asked.

Card shower requestedfor Reid & Kari NolteA card shower is requested

honoring Reid and Kari (Krause)Nolte for their 45th wedding an-niversary.Reid and Kari were married at

Trinity Lutheran Church nearMansfield on Aug. 17, 1973.Send sympathy cards for Kari

after having to deal with Reid for45 years and congratulationscards to Reid for getting such awonderful lady!Or just send them a funny

card to keep their minds work-ing, to: 46106 186th St., Castle-wood, SD 57223.

Tis the season of the ballgames of summer and many ofour young people (and parents)have been spending hours onball diamonds and bleachers.Congratulations to the teamswho have played hard and beenrewarded for their efforts withchampionship trophies. What anhonor for Orient to have theseyouth champions, and continuethe winning traditions that havebeen an important part of Ori-ent’s history.Polo was one busy rural com-

munity last Saturday as friends

and relatives from far and widegathered at St. Liborius and thePolo Hall for the wedding and re-ception for Mallory Fisher andXavier Schlechter. Congratula-tions X and Mallory as you carryon the tradition set of Polo’s orig-inal settlers from Germany, inthe 1890’s and early 1900’s.A bit of irony also is that three

families who were carrying onthe tradition or their early set-tler parents, have recentlymoved to Faulkton, thus passingon their homes to children /grandchildren of those originalsettlers. Marion and the late VicMartinmaas, Paul and PearlSchlechter and Jack and JoAnnSchaefers now have Faulktonaddresses and MaryAnn Beidleris also in Faulkton. Our sympathy to Mary Ann

Baloun and family. Several fromthe community attended the fu-neral for Burton Baloun, age 86,in Faulkton Saturday, Aug. 11,2018. Burton and Mary Annmade many trips from Seneca tovisit in Polo to attend events andvisit with friends and family. Hissister Virginia Wieseler and fam-ily; Vickie, Steve, Brenda andScott and JoEllen and her sib-lings were among those return-ing for the funeral. Fr. TomClement of Herreid, was the cel-ebrant for Burton’s funeral massat St. Thomas.A nice turn out was in atten-

dance for the meal served follow-ing Mass Sunday which willbenefit charities supported bythe Orient-Polo Catholic Daugh-ters. A special time to meet andgreet all the special people whocome to share in the Mass andlunch on Sundays.Representing Court Our Lady

of Fatima at the workshops heldin Madison Saturday were,Cheryl and JoAnn Schaefers andColleen Leer. Members fromEast River Courts attended pre-sentations by the state officers ofall the charities and categoriessponsored by the organization. Thanks to the support receivedfrom area communities, our localcourt always garners credit forthe numerous events and proj-

ects sponsored.Ball games and summer activ-

ities keep everyone busy in our‘warm weather’. Makes one verygrateful for air conditionerswhen the thermometer finds the80’s and 90’s most days. Farmersand gardeners are busy with theresults of their spring planting.Tall corn covers many acres asone drives the rural roads andlots of bales are lined up in rowsor in ditches to lend proof of ear-lier rains.Catching up for a column is

like being determined to catch afoul ball that is just as deter-mined to be out of reach! Sincedetermination does not give upin either scenario, we will seewhat we can land in the glove(computer) to score a base or twofor this week. No home run ex-pectations . . . From A and W wecan only provide a little for the‘Alphabet Soup’ this week.Starting with Anglin since

there are couple items of note,we find that FranAnglin has en-

joyed some visiting with familyin California and Kansas, as wellas visits to the farm with her andMike, from families of Joe andLauraAnglin, Spearfish, Jeaniceand Jim Miskimins, Mara andAlexa, Mitchell and Kenny,Sioux Falls.AND Polo can report a change

for the Anglin home built in thefifties, as they prepare to wel-come new residents to Polo’sMain Street to the original homeof the late Tom, Frances andHarley Anglin.Only a historian would make

this note, but it will be of interestfor history to note, this is the lastof the ten new homes built in50/60’s to be passed down to fam-ily or others. Polo Store - andthe Cream and Egg Buildingwhich became a Locker Plant;Polo Lumber, Polo Legion, thePowlovich-Schaefers Garage,Greg’s Repair, the Fire Hall,

Ponderosa and the St. Libo-rius/Polo Schools may not all stillbe active Polo attractions, butliving in Polo Village continues,as residents keep the village’soriginal homes alive and wellwith interesting appeal fortoday’s generations.A future column can provide

updates - maybe not necessaryfor those who are ‘living it now’,but it will definitely be read withenthusiasm and interest by thecolumn readers, according to theregular comments made.

South Dakota Historical SocietyJeff Mammenga

Media CoordinatorThe latest edition of cowboy

poet Badger Clark’s most popu-lar volume has just been pub-lished by the South DakotaHistorical Society Foundation.

“Sun and Saddle Leather” hasbeen in continuous print since itwas first published in 1915. Thevolume contains two of Clark’smost popular poems, “Ridin’”and “A Cowboy’s Prayer.”

Western photos from theSouth Dakota State HistoricalSociety-Archives were used to il-lustrate the new edition of “Sunand Saddle Leather.” Financialsupport was provided by theSouth Dakota Arts Council andthe Clarkson Family Founda-tion.

“Cowboys said of Clark’spoems that ‘his words rang true.’Clark’s tales of the open rangeand the West still ring true, 100years after they were first pub-lished,” said foundation presi-dent Catherine Forsch. “The newedition continues efforts to keepClark’s works in print.”

The foundation is the non-profit partner of the SouthDakota State Historical Societyand has headquarters with thesociety at the Cultural HeritageCenter in Pierre. The foundationbegan overseeing the reprintingand distribution of work byClark in 2015.

Clark was born on Jan. 1,1883, in Albia, Iowa. He and hisfamily moved to Dakota Terri-tory when he was three monthsold. After being diagnosed withtuberculosis at age 23, Clarkwent to Arizona and was hiredon a cattle ranch near Tomb-stone. Clark put his feelings ofenjoying the open range and hisfascination with cowboys intopoems, many of which he sent tohis stepmother. She sent a poemcalled “Ridin’” to Pacific Monthlymagazine, which paid $10 toClark when it was published.Clark began sending poems toPacific Monthly and other mag-azines on a regular basis.

Clark’s stepmother is also said

to have encouraged her stepsonto write a poem reflecting thecowboy religion. The result was“A Cowboy’s Prayer.”

Clark returned to the BlackHills in 1910. “Sun and SaddleLeather,” Clark’s first volume ofpoetry, was published in 1915. Itwas followed by “Grass GrownTales.” The two volumes weresubsequently gathered into onebook under the title “Sun andSaddle Leather.”

Clark was named SouthDakota’s poet laureate in 1937, atitle he held until his death 20years later.

“Sun and Saddle Leather” andother works by Clark are avail-able from the foundation by call-ing 605-773-6346 or at thewebsite www.sdhsf.org.

New Medicare Cardsarriving in mailboxesCMS removes Social Security

numbers, increasing fraudprotection and consumerexperience for millions

of AmericansThe Centers for Medicare &

Medicaid Services (CMS) ismailing new Medicare cards toprotect the safety and security ofpeople with Medicare benefits. The new Medicare cards nolonger contain a person’s SocialSecurity number, but rather aunique, randomly-assignedMedicare number that protectsthe identities of people withMedicare reduces fraud and of-fers better safeguards of impor-tant health and financialinformation.“Removing Social Security

numbers from Medicare cards isone of the many ways CMS iscommitted to putting patientsfirst and improving the con-sumer healthcare experience,”said Jeff Hinson, CMS DenverRegional Administrator. “Thischange not only protectsMedicare patients from fraud, but also safeguards taxpayerdollars by making it harder forcriminals to use Social Securitynumbers to falsely bill Medicarefor care services and benefitsthat were never performed.”

Work on this important initia-tive was made possible by theenactment of the Medicare Ac-cess and CHIP ReauthorizationAct of 2015 (MACRA).CMS began mailing the new

Medicare cards to people whocurrently have Medicare bene-fits in South Dakota this week.Additionally, people who arenew to Medicare in SouthDakota started to receive theirnew Medicare cards in Aprilalong with others across thecountry when the mailing firstbegan. As soon as people receivetheir new Medicare card, theyshould safely and securely de-stroy their old Medicare cardand keep their new Medicarenumber confidential. Our cur-rent mailing strategy allows usto complete the mailings of newcards to all people withMedicare, both new and currentenrollees, over the next year. The new Medicare card will

not change any of the programbenefits and services that eligi-ble people enrolled in Medicarereceive. People with Medicareand their caregivers can visitmedicare.gov/newcard to findout when new Medicare cardswill be mailed to their area. They can also sign up for emailnotifications about the new card

mailing and check the status intheir state.Healthcare providers, suppli-

ers and people with Medicarewill be able to use secure look uptools that allow quick access tothe new Medicare numberswhen needed. There will also bea 21-month transition period forhealthcare providers and suppli-ers to use either the former So-cial Security-based Medicarenumber or the new Medicarenumber to ensure a seamlesstransition. As the newMedicare cards are

being mailed, people withMedicare should look out forscams and follow these tips:• Medicare will never contact

you for your Medicare numberor other personal information soyou can obtain your newMedicare card.• Don’t pay for your new

Medicare card. It’s free. If any-one calls or approaches you andsays you need to pay for it, that’sa scam.• Guard your card. When you

get your new card, safeguard itlike you would health insuranceor credit cards.• Only give your new MedicareNumber to doctors, pharmacists, other health care providers, yourinsurers, or people you trust towork with Medicare on your be-half.

The United States is in the midst of an unprecedented epidemic of prescription drug overdose deaths. Nearly 52,000 people died of drug overdoses in 2015, and two thirds of these deaths were caused by overdoses involving prescription drugs, mostly scheduled medicines. (CDC data). The US Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) classify medications on their ability to cause addiction, severe bodily harm, and death. Some medications are only obtained in limited amounts and are called scheduled medicines. Some very common scheduled prescription medicines that people take include Lorazepam, Valium, Ambien, Ritalin, Adderall, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, and Codeine. There is a major push at the State (State of SD included) and National level to greatly curb prescribing of unnecessary and lethal medications. New laws have been enacted, which could affect your ability to obtain scheduled medicines. Some of these medicines may soon be discontinued. If you have any questions about these new laws or how prescription medicines and scheduled medicines can affect you, please see your healthcare provider for more information!
