Consider the fol-lowing Tips foryour Februarylandscape. Ofgreatest immediateconcern is the firstbullet point. Let’shope this weekend’sweather forecastholds up:

• It is gettingvery dry, especiallynear the soil sur-face. If you havetrees or shrubs thathave been plantedin the last year ortwo, they couldprobably use agood watering.

• February is thetime to controlthose pesky winterweeds. Herbicidecontrol is muchmore effective if anapplication can bemade before explo-sive spring growthoccurs. See OSUFact Sheet HLA-6601 BroadleafWeed Control forWeeds inOklahoma andFact Sheet HLA-6421 ControllingWeeds in HomeLawns. As always, remember that allpesticides are onlyeffective if usedproperly. Alwaysfollow label direc-tions and do nothesitate to call thePayne CountyExtension office ifyou have questionsconcerning properuse.

• Winter treepruning should becompleted as soonas possible.February is NOTthe time to prunemost shrubs.Spring flowering

shrubs such asflowering quince, forsythia, winterhoneysuckle, andwinter jasmine allbloom on last year’sgrowth. Wait until

these plants havecompleted theirspring floweringbefore pruning orcutting back. If youare really itchingfor spring to be

here, clip a few ofthese twigs off now, drop them in avase, and enjoyspring color indoorsa few weeks early.

• Ornamentalgrasses and grass-like Liriope shouldbe cut back inFebruary. Theseplants share acommon trait thatdeserves mention. The leaves thatdevelop willremain on theplant throughout

the growing season. If you wait untilspring growth hasstarted and removethe tip of the leaf, the plant will lookbad all season.Look closely beforepruning and clipjust above thegrowing point of

the new leaves.• Delay pruning

for summer flower-ing shrubs such ascrape myrtles androses until theybegin to break bud. This allows you toassess the winterdamage (if therewas any) so you can

prune as neededinstead of givingthe plants a genericwaist high shear-ing.

• Dormant oil, anold standard forcontrolling somepests in ornamen-

tal and fruit trees, should be appliedbefore buds beginto break. See FactSheet EPP-7306Ornamental andLawn Pest Controlfor Homeowners.

• Cool seasonvegetables like car-rots, lettuce, peas, potatoes, and cab-bage can be plant-ed about mid-month. See FactSheet HLA-6004Oklahoma GardenPlanning Guide.Perennial gardencrops such asstrawberries, blackberries, rasp-berries, blackber-ries, asparagus andgrapes should alsobe planted towards

the end of themonth. While blue-berries and rasp-berries can begrown successfullyin our area, PayneCounty is far fromtheir ideal climateso you can expectsome challenges.

Hardwood flooring pros, consBy RosemarySadez FriedmannTribune News Service

Hardwood floor-ing is considered ahallmark for floorcovering. It hasbeen used for agesand gives a warmand inviting look toany home. The rea-son I can say “toany home” isbecause these floorcoverings rangefrom elegant to rus-tic in the choices. You can install thisflooring in a con-temporary home aswell as a tradition-al one. Woodalways emits a feel-ing of hominess socovering the floorin wood will natu-rally create a wel-come emotion.

There are thosewho are afraid ofusing wood as theirmain flooringthroughout thehouse. Perhapssome cons you’veheard come fromthese facts. Solidwood flooring is 100percent hardwoodthat is milled fromlumber. Since it is a

natural material, hardwood reacts tochanges in its sur-roundings such asmoisture andextreme tempera-tures. These cancause solid wood toshrink or expand. All solid hardwoodcan be sanded andrefinished if neededover the years sothey do last foreverbut there is thatmaintenance thatneeds to beaddressed. Solidhardwood is notrecommended forinstallation inbathrooms and inkitchens because ofmoisture in thoserooms.

Using wood onstairs is beautifulbut noisy. With bed-rooms upstairs andpossibly sleepingchildren, the woodstairs will sendnoisy footstepsounds all over theplace. Also, safetyis an issue. A woodstair is slippery, unlike one coveredwith carpet. A woodstairs with a run-ner up the middlewill solve those

problems. Realizethough, that youare paying for thewood (not cheap)then covering withrug. Nevertheless,it is absolutelybeautiful.

Here are somepros. Considerengineered woodflooring. It is builtup of layers of woodconsisting of threeto ten layers thatare glued together. This multi-plystructure givesengineered woodsuperior stability, which reduces con-cerns associatedwith shrinking andexpanding whentemperature andhumidity change.Engineered woodcan be installed inkitchens and inbathrooms so noworries there.

Consider a lami-nate flooring. It hasfour layers consist-ing of a wear layer,a design layer, aninner core layerand a backinglayer. This layeredconstruction makes

laminate floors remarkablydurable. And it looks very muchlike a regular hardwood floor.

A definite pro: Hard flooring sur-faces are allergy sufferer friendly.

Allergens like pet dander and dusttend to build up in carpet and evenwith frequent vacuuming, the aller-gens can still be there.

Those allergens don’t have as

many hiding places in hardwoodfloors.

Another pro: House sale. A housewith hardwood floors will usuallyhave an advantage over one that

has other flooring when it comes toreal estate sales.

So there you have it, now it’s upto you to decide how to cover yourfloors.

By David W. Myers

Despite wide-spread beliefs, waterand sewer systemsaren’t prone to morebreakdowns on foot-ball’s biggest day ofthe year. Electricityuse actually goesdown, not up.

DEAR MR.MYERS: Is it truethat water andsewer systems inAmerica’s majorcities are moreprone to break-downs or backupson Super BowlSunday becauseeveryone goes tothe bathroom athalftime and flush-es at about thesame time?

ANSWER: No,that’s a classic“urban legend” withno statistical evi-dence to, er, back itup.

Anyone who hasever watched foot-ball’s big gameknows that it’s filledwith tons of commer-cials, allowing view-ers countless oppor-tunities to relievethemselves. Onlythe most ardent fanwho doesn’t want torisk missing a singleplay will delay apotty break untilhalftime or whenthe post-game showcomes on.

The mythappeared to gainsome credibilitywhen a 16-inchwater main in SaltLake City broke dur-ing the 1984 SuperBowl, inconvenienc-ing thousands oflocal residents. Butwater experts notethat the Utah city’ssewage system, like

those in mostmetropolises, is anti-quated and prone toconstant break-downs. The fact thatthis one occurred onSuper Sunday wasmerely a coincidence.

There’s anotherfallacy about SuperBowl Sunday, but itinvolves energy use. With roughly 110million Americanswatching the gameeach year, it’s reason-able to think thatelectricity usagewould soar as theyall huddle aroundtheir televisions.

The opposite istrue. That’s becausemost folks watch thegame at Super Bowlparties with theirfriends at home or ina bar. If you host aparty with 15 guests, they’ll likely turntheir TVs and lightsoff in their ownhomes before arriv-ing at yours.Electricity demanddrops.

Also, General

Electric reports, lotsof folks don’t usetheir electric appli-ances much on SuperSunday to cook likethey would for aHoliday dinner. Theyinstead opt for thestandard chips anddip, cold-cut plattersor take-out pizza. That means demandfor the energy need-ed to run ovens andother appliances alsodrop.

Oh, and a gentlereminder: If you’rehosting a party ofyour own, monitorhow much alcoholeach guest is con-suming and keepplenty of coffee, sodapop and bottledwater available. If aguest drinks toomuch booze and getsin an accident on theway back home, youmay be held finan-cially responsible forany damages orinjuries that occurand could even facecriminal charges.

* * *

DEAR MR.MYERS: I reallylike the monthlyshopping tips forhome items thatyou have beenproviding in yourcolumn for thepast year or so,but I haven’t seenany for January. What’s the deal?

ANSWER: The“deal” is that I’vebeen waiting fortoday to tell youabout, well, the dealsthat you can get thisweek as football’sFeb. 1 Super Bowlapproaches.

The best bargainson generic high-defi-nition televisions, asI previously wrote, were offered inDecember, becauseretailers wanted tolure in shopperswith the hope thatbuyers would makeadditional holidaypurchases of prod-ucts with higherprofit margins.

If you’re in themarket for a name-

brand HDTV, though-- made by compa-nies such as Sony,LG, Samsung andthe like -- it’s finallytime to whip outyour purse or walletand make the pur-chase. Retailersalways slash pricesto the bone to com-pete against eachother as the widelywatched SuperBowl grows closer, and they want toclear out theirinventory before thenew models that

were unveiled atthe giantConsumersElectronics Showearlier this monthstart arriving instores over the nextseveral weeks.

There also aredeals on otherhousehold itemsnow. Most bigdepartment storeshave already start-ed their annual“white sales,” withdiscounts of up to50 percent onlinens, says shop-

ping pro BrentShelton at bargain-hunting websiteFatWallet.com. Headds that manystores have extend-ed their white-salediscounts to otherbedroom and evenbathroom products.

Prices on sofas, dinner tables andmost other types offurniture also havebeen slashed, withdiscounts of up to 50percent, often with 0percent financing formajor purchases.
