Summary Dental assistants aid dentists during the examination and treatment of patients. They prepare the patients, sterilize and disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays and prepare the materials that will be needed by the dentist during the examination. They are responsible for taking and recording the dental and medical records of the patients.
Duties and Responsibilities - Obtaining and recording patients’ medical histories - Preparing patients for dental treatment - Keeping patients’ mouths dry by use of a suction pump - Arranging dental instruments, materials and medications on chairside tray - Mixing and preparing materials such as fillings and cements
Licensure and Special Requirements Most states require passing a written or practical exam such as the Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) and Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) exams
Education and Training On-the-Job Training High School Diploma with Technical Education Junior/Technical/Community College
