Together, We Empower Rural India

Population: 1.1 Million Villages: 431Rain fall: 594 mm (Non-uniformly distribution)Primary water source: Groundwater (78% - Saline, TDS: >3500 ppm)• High gradient and low retention time for runoff• Poor ground water recharging• Excessive pumping for domestic and agricultural use• Depleting fresh water aquifers• Encroachment of saline ground water over fresh water zones

Water contamination

üOver dependence on ground water

üLow recharging and high depletion rate

üLack of surface water sources

üUnreliable water supply

üInequitable distribution and faulty distribution network

Major issues

Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD)

üInequitable distribution and faulty distribution network

üUnsafe disposal of waste water

üWater salinity and contamination

üLack of water consciousness

Dry spells span for 120 days. During these days, women have to travel 3-4 kilometres to fetch water, adding to their drudgery

Objectives of pond desilting / revival

ØTo collect and store the unutilized runoff during the monsoon for direct use of

human and cattle.

ØTo minimize soil erosion carrying away fertile soil along with it.

ØTo increase the soil moisture in the area supporting local vegetation.

ØTo increase the water retention time and increasing water percolation into ground

Institute of Rural Research and Development (IRRAD)

ØTo increase the water retention time and increasing water percolation into ground

Ø To increase the availability of fresh water both for domestic and agricultural

purposes and reducing pressure on existing ground water sources.

ØTo creating more fresh water sources, both surface and underground.

ØTo create awareness in the society on role of water bodies in water management.

ØEmpower the communities on water related issues.

5. Worked together on challenges faced during implementation and solutions .

6. Encouragement to work in remote and no facility forest area on hill top (no water, no food

and no shelter).

7. Finally, local community was very happy as water storage capacity of ponds has increase

several times and now they hold water throughout the year (specially Dhahdhyani)

bringing a big relief to hundreds of peoples and apx 25,000 cattles living on Aravali hills.
