A STUDY ON DAVAO CHINATOWN SHOPHOUSE AND ITS POSSIBILITIES FOR
REVITALIZATION
Rethinking the socio-cultural impact of modernization and cultural synthesis of Filipino
Chinese
The Philippines is on the rise among Asian countries in terms of economic growth.Especially on its
major cities like Davao City, were businesses flourish. Among these businesses are the entrepreneurs with
their "hands on" operations on their personal shops. But because of the expanding sprawl of the city and
due to the rising self-sustained subdivisions, home and work is slowly being separated. These lead to a
deprived life of either at home or at work.
A Shophouse consist of a shop on the lower ground floor and residential accommodation on its
upper floor/s. With the faade open to the public along a covered walk way. (Lim, 1993) The structure has
usually two to three stories levels with narrow frontage and deep rears. (Guan, 2011) The shops on the
lower ground was designed to accommodate a small scaled commercial enterprise such as shops,
restaurants, food or beverage outlets, and service outlet providers. (Zhu, Sim, & Liu, 2006) These
shophouses are separated by party walls. This structure that is formed in rows is typically located facing
each and separated by a road.
Shophouses were introduced to the Philippines by the Chinese businessmen who came to the
country to do market and trade. Shophouses are evident in Davao City especially in Chinatown
Uyangguren. These shophouses have their distinct traditional Chinese architecture imprinted on it.
However, the architectural style of shophouses today are being endangered due to the modernization of
the city.
The goal of this study is to revitalize the architectural heritage of Shophouse district in the midst of
the modernization in Davao city. The researcher will study the characters, factors and elements found a
shophouse. With that, the acoustical design, landscape design, and master planning of the existing
shophouse district in Chinatown will also be modified to improve the well-being of the entrepreneurs and
consumers. Thus, this study will execute the revitalization of the shophouse district in Chinatown to aid the
conservation of its artistic, contextual and informational values without being left behind by the fast
progressive modernization of the city.
