ANOINTING OF THE SICKJesus’ example of always caring for others is present in the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick. This sacrament is a Sacrament of Healing just as Reconciliation is. Reconciliation heals our souls and Anointing of the Sick helps to heal both physically and spiritually! The sacrament brings strength, peace, courage and healing to those who are seriously ill. You don’t receive Anointing of the Sick if you have a cold but if you are suffering from a serious illness such as cancer, you may want to receive it. In the Rite of Anointing of the Sick, the priest will anoint the person with oil of the sick on their forehead and hands. He will offer them them Holy Communion as a way to prepare them to enter into eternal life. Anointing of the Sick does not mean someone will be physically healed and not die but it brings the peace of God to them in a special sacramental way. The priest will bless the person and the family will pray together for the sick person. You can receive Anointing of the Sick more than once. This sacrament shows the special care

and love that Jesus had for those in need. Today, we follow Jesus’ example and pray for the sick during the Prayer of the Faithful at Mass.

SACRAMENTS OF SERVICEGod invites us to love Him and each other in special ways. He created us in His image and wants us to care for, serve each other and share our God given talents and abilites to help others. A man and a woman unite through the Sacrament of Matrimony which is also called getting married. It means they make a commitment to each other to serve God, one another and the Church as a married couple. This also means bringing up children to love and serve God. In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, men make a promise (take a vow) that they will devote their lives to serving God and their parish communities as priests. The Rite of Ordination gives the man special powers and responsibilities to serve the Church. Both sacraments fill people with the grace needed to serve the community and help others grow in their relationship with Jesus. All sacraments give us grace!!! THE VINE AND THE BRANCHESJesus told a special story to people to help them understand how important it is still to stay connected to Him to grow closer to God the Father. The parable of the Vine and Branches tells us how staying close to Jesus will help us grow. Through the Sacraments of Service, we grow to become better able to serve the Church. Listen to the words from the Gospel of John. The Vine and the Branches John 15:1-12 15 “I am(A) the true vine,(B) and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,(C) while every branch that does bear fruit(D) he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.(E) 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you.(F) No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;(G) apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.(H) 7 If you remain in me(I) and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.(J) 8 This is to my Father’s glory,(K) that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.(L)

9 “As the Father has loved me,(M) so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands,(N) you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.(O) 12 My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.(P)

Jesus also taught us a very important New Commandment that tells us that we should love one another as Jesus loves us. Jesus is teaching us that without being connected to Him, we will never truly live our live with the purpose given to us by God. Our happiness relies on our connection to God and sharing the gifts He has given us with others. IF NOT IN CLASS PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW AND DO THE VINE AND BRANCHES SHEET!!!
