Ontology-based knowledge management system realizes representation, organization and management of knowledge resources through the establishment of the domain ontology of a variety of knowledge areas.

FAO launched the Agricultural Ontology Service (AOS) scheme in 2000.

The Agricultural Information Institute, CAAS takes the lead in conducting the agricultural ontology exploration and research in China.

The agricultural Ontology research is officially launched at the national level.

Established agricultural science and technology documents ontology, agricultural production technology ontology, agricultural market information ontology, agricultural commodities ontology, East Sea fish ontology, etc.

Developed some ontology tools such as the OWL-online editing system, the Agricultural ontology management system, the Fish Diseases Ontology-based Reasoning Prototype System etc.

The web site of SOUNONG (http://www.sounong.net) overlaid nearly 8000 agricultural web sites, built more than 10,000 agents, monitoring more than 12,000 of national agricultural products wholesale and markets with more than 20,000 varieties of agricultural products.

Published nearly 150 scientific papers, fostered nearly 10 Ph.D students and 40 master students

Carry out various application of the agricultural ontology such as agricultural natural disaster risk assessment, comprehensive evaluation of agricultural economic development level, the adaptive analysis in development of the industry of agricultural replacement planting, food safety of agricultural products and trace back etc.

Cooperate closely with agricultural enterprises and adopt agricultural ontology methods and concepts to enhance their level of knowledge management and encourage them to become innovative enterprises.

China Agricultural Ontology Service Research Alliance will work in the form of NGO.

The Alliance will complete the collection and assessment of related agricultural ontology service research and application resources of all participating units, including information resources, the research results, the systems etc.

Build a resource pool similar as the CIARD RING to allow the users to obtain resource information through this web portal.

The Alliance will set up three working groups e.g. the group of engineers and technicians, the group of mechanism operation and the group of publicizing and extension.

The establishment of mechanisms for communication among the groups will be also needed for an efficient work.

A networking project operation platform will be built based on VIVO or AgriVIVO as well.

Setting Up China Agricultural Ontology Service Research Alliance, Strengthening the

Team Cooperation

In support of the Seventh Framework Program of EU, the EU countries cooperate with FAO and non-EU countries like China to be jointly carrying out the agINFRA project. This is a good opportunity for China participating in relevant international scientific and technological cooperation.

The Agricultural Information Institute of CAAS organized related scientists to participate in the project directly and introduce advanced technology and mature management experiences to make contributions to the international cooperation.

Actively Participating International Cooperation in AOS

17

Agricultural ontology as a scientific methodology in agricultural information resource organization becomes one of the research hot topics.

We do hope to achieve greater progress through strong government support and extensive international cooperation.

We would like to express our sincere acknowledgements to the assistance from FAO.
