Operating Instructions

The 1137 Top Stitcher will top stitch three sides of pocket flaps of various shapes and

sizes. The open side of the pocket flap should be closed to avoid problems.

Operating Instructions

Turn on power and air. Move the Run/Reset switch to Run, (item 3). The presser foot

raises and the machine should be in the ready to sew position. Load the pocket flap from left

to right under the foot and against the edge guide. The machine will sew the first side, stop,

turn, and sew the second side, and also stop, turn, and sew the third side. At the end of the

third side the machine will stop, undertrim, and position the foot up in preparation for the

next flap. At each turn the edge guide retracts to make room for the corner of the flap.

Forward tack stitches may be necessary to sew to the edge of the flap on the third side.

The retractable edge guide, fully extended, should be flush with the presser foot and the

front edge guide should be aligned with the retractable guide to maintain the correct stitch

margin. The foot may need to be modified to change the margin. When the margin is

changed the edge-sensing eye will need to be moved to hold a square corner.

A square corner is obtained by stopping the needle at the same distance from the edge of

the flap as the distance from the needle to the retractable edge guide, (see figure 1). If

necessary, adjust the front to back position of the lower photocell, item 2, (edge-sensing

eye) to set this distance. Adjust the eye in very small increments until the two distances are

the same. (The eye should be centered on the presser foot.) Square corners are easier to

obtain with a short stitch length. 12 SPI or greater and a maximum of 2600 - 2700 RPM is

recommended. All corners will not be square.

Operating InstructionsThe number of slow stitches is determined by the upper eye, item 1, (slow-stitch eye).

Keep the eye close to the foot to keep the number of slow stitches to a minimum. If the

machine does not stop and turn the flap, one of the eyes cannot see the reflective tape.

Adjust as necessary. To keep the photocells in good working order wipe them off with a clean

dry cloth at the beginning of each shift and replace the reflective tape if worn or oily.

On some machines, after a predetermined amount of inactivity (1-3 min.) the foot will

drop and the machine will not run until the Run/Reset switch is cycled. This is a function of

the motor control. Refer to your manual for more information.

Proper guiding of the pocket flap (straight sewing) against the edge guides is

accomplished by several factors. The pressure on the presser foot should be kept at a

minimum. The spring guide, item 4, should apply a small amount of pressure in front of the

presser foot, and the edge guide/loading air jet, item 5, should be adjusted to assist in

loading and help keep the pocket against the edge guides. Some experimentation may be

needed.

At the end of the first and second side, the Pivot Assembly, item 6, rotates out, clamps

the flap, returns to home position, releases the flap, and the machine begins to sew. A

smooth release of the gripper assembly, item 9, is necessary for proper guiding or sewing of

the flap. Adjust the flow controls on the pivot air cylinder, item 7, so when the Pivot

Assembly rotates it will have a smooth even motion. Adjust the flow control on the gripper

air cylinder, item 8, so the gripper assembly releases smoothly.

Operating Instructions

Both photocells have to be covered to allow the machine to sew in Run and the machine

should not begin to sew until the flap is completely turned. With the Run/Reset switch in

Reset mode cover the reflective tape with a flap. Move the flap to the left and the eye should

sense the reflective tape within 1/8" of the edge guide. Adjust left to right as necessary.

If the Pivot Assembly, item 6, should get out of alignment adjust as follows: With the air

pressure on, set the initial or home position with the two ¼-20 screws, item 10, that hold the

pivot bracket to the rear of the pivot air cylinder. Adjust the home position to allow the notch

in the gripper assembly, item 9, to nest close to but not touch the front edge guide. If the

gripper assembly should need rotating to complete this adjustment loosen the clamp screw,

item 11, on the pivot arm and adjust as necessary. Tighten clamp. With the air pressure off

fully extend the Pivot Assembly, item 6. The gripper assembly should come very close to but

not touch the spring guide. This allows the gripper assembly to rotate very small pocket

flaps.

If the gripper assembly needs tightening align the left side of the notch in the gripper

parallel with the edge guide and tighten the 10-32 hex nut, item 12.

To set the sensitivity on the eyes, should they need it, turn the screw on the left of the

eye counter-clockwise until the red and green lights go off. Then turn clockwise 1/2 turn past

the point that the red and green lights turn on. If they don't respond properly then they

cannot "see" the reflective tape or the tape has gotten dirty or oily and doesn't reflect as it

should. Adjust the eyes or replace the tape as necessary. The screw on top of both eyes should be set to the LON (Light Operated) position.
