Email [email protected] or visit http://www.bellemeadeumc.org/#/newsletter-events/ the-spire-newsletter I like to hike. I'm not sure why, but I quit hiking for almost 5 years. Funny how we deny ourselves the very things that can enhance our lives, and engage ourselves in the very things that diminish our lives. Alas, the human condition. Go figure. Obviously, hiking is good physical exercise. It's a great cardio workout, and you can burn over 500 calories an hour. That's a lot more than walking or weight training, and it's a lot less boring. Not so obviously, hiking is good spiritual exercise. Yes, I pray in the solitude of hiking with words that I think or words that I say. But far more often, I use the solitude for the prayer of silence. My mind doesn't tend to wander when I hike – and that's saying something for someone with a monkey brain (thoughts that scatter like monkeys swinging through the trees). With the roots and rocks on the trail, I have to concentrate. I stay in the present moment. My senses come alive. I focus on what I can see, hear, smell, and touch. And every time, God shows up…out of the silence, in the present moment. And that's why I hike. I went hiking a few days ago. I saw a single green leaf growing out of the dead leaves. It had a jagged edge, and was two-toned, with a lighter shade of green out- lined by a darker green. Didn't see another one the en- tire five miles. Night-time temperatures had been in the 20’s. I wondered how this was possible – new life taking a bow on the stage of a frozen world. But then again, I've read somewhere all things are possible with God. And then there was a small, scrawny cedar tree growing by the side of the trail. Someone hung a single green or- nament on top of that tree. A Christmas tree. In the mid- dle of the forest. I'd like to meet the person who topped off that tree. They must have a reverence for Christmas, and a great sense of humor. The Holy mixed with laugh- ter – that pretty much sums up the Almighty for me. As I approached the trailhead, a chipmunk ran across the trail not 10 feet in front of me. A Cooper's hawk came out of nowhere, and pounced on the chipmunk with its talons bared. I jumped, the hawk was startled, and the chipmunk escaped. It was a moment of salvation and redemption. But then I thought about the hawk that just missed a meal. Ah, the ambiguity of life, once again, mirroring the ambiguity of God. It's the time for resolutions. How about refreshing your spiritual life this year? I'm starting a weekly hiking group soon. It's for men and women. You don't need to be in great shape, but don't hike if you haven't had any exer- cise lately. We will keep a moderate pace. We will do about 2.5 miles in silence (more or less). When we fin- ish, we will drink a lot of water and reflect on our experi- ence. Be on the lookout for more details. See you at the House come Sunday – and maybe on the trails in a few weeks.
