Good News Reflection Fourth Sunday of Advent Today’s Readings: Mi 5:1–4a; Ps 80:2–3, 15–16, 18–19; Heb 10:5–10; Lk 1:39–45 For years, Catholic spiritual writers have drawn our attention to the Christmas liturgy’s subtle—and not-so-subtle—linking of Christ’s incarnation with his paschal mystery. In the infancy nar-ratives of Matthew and Luke, there are countless intimations of the Passion and cross. The saints of the Christmas octave, dubbed “comites Christi,” Christ’s companions in suffering, form a royal honor guard of martyrs and others who bore witness at great per-sonal sacrifice to the Child we hail as “Prince of Peace,” while the wood of the manger evokes the wood of the cross. But these days, sadly, in the wake of seemingly endless mass shootings at schools, we need no reminders of how close in real life are the cradle and the cross. May our hearts find, if not answers, at least comfort in the prophet Micah’s reminder that, from the pain of a woman’s labor came forth the Child who is our incarnate peace. COMFORT AND SALVATION All of today’s scriptures seem to declare Christmas’s “comfort and joy.” Micah declares that, as small as Bethlehem is, the child born there will bring peace that “shall reach to the ends of the earth.” Hebrews proclaims that, despite pain and suffering, the “offering of the body of Jesus Christ” saves us all. In today’s Gospel, bearing the Christ Child within her, Mary, barely more than a child herself, immediately, unselfishly sets aside her own preoccupations—and as a betrothed but as yet un-married mother-to-be, how many they must have been—to travel in haste, over dangerous terrain, a four-day journey (the scholars say) from Nazareth to Ain-Karem, to the home of Elizabeth and Zechariah. BLESSED Then, just as David leapt and danced before the ancient Ark of the Covenant that bore precious signs of God’s abiding presence, so John leaps in his mother Elizabeth’s womb as Mary arrives, a living ark bearing God’s living presence. Elizabeth joyfully greets Mary in words that we pray daily in the “Hail Mary”: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Why Mary is so “blessed” Elizabeth then explains: “Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.” Likewise, we may dare hope to be “blessed” for “believing that what was spoken” to us “by the Lord”—Jesus’ promise of mercy—will be fulfilled as we share God’s mercy with everyone. For by reason of our baptism and, more immediately and repeatedly, because of our participation in the Eucharist, we too bear within ourselves the living Christ. To whom, or to what situation, do we need to bear Christ this Christ-mas? Indeed, throughout the year, how selflessly do we set our own concerns aside? How eagerly—“in haste”—do we, disre-garding difficulties, traverse whatever dangerous terrain needs conquering to be of service to another?

Reflexión de las Buenas Nuevas Cuarto Domingo de Adviento Lecturas de hoy: Mi 5:1–4a; Sal 80 (79):2–3, 15–16, 18–19; Heb 10:5–10; Lc 1:39–45. Durante años, los escritores espirituales católicos han llamado la atención sobre la sutil –y no tan sutil– vinculación de la liturgia navideña con la encarnación de Cristo y su misterio pascual. En los relatos de la infancia de Mateo y Lucas, hay innumerables insinuaciones de la Pasión y la cruz. Los santos de la Octava de Navidad, llamados “comites Christi”, compañeros de sufrimiento de Cristo, forman una guardia de honor real de mártires y otros que dieron testimonio con gran sacrificio personal del Niño que aclamamos como “Príncipe de la Paz”, aunque la madera del pesebre evoca la madera de la cruz. Pero en estos días, triste-mente, a raíz de los aparentemente interminables tiroteos en ma-sa en las escuelas, no necesitamos recordatorios de lo cerca que están en la vida real la cuna y la cruz. Que nuestros corazones encuentren, si no respuestas, al menos consuelo en el recordato-rio de Miqueas de que, del dolor del parto de una mujer nació el Niño que es nuestra paz encarnada. CONSUELO Y SALVACIÓN Todas las Escrituras de hoy parecen declarar el “consuelo y la alegría” de la Navidad. Miqueas declara que, por pequeña que sea Belén, el niño que allí nazca traerá la paz que “llegará hasta los confines de la tierra”. La carta a los hebreos proclama que, a pesar del dolor y el sufrimiento, la “ofrenda del cuerpo de Jesu-cristo” nos salva a todos. En el Evangelio de hoy, María, que apenas es una niña, deja de lado inmediatamente sus propias preocupaciones –y como futura madre desposada, pero aún no casada, cuántas debían de ser– para viajar a toda prisa, por un terreno peligroso, en un viaje de cuatro días (según los estudi-osos) desde Nazaret a Ain-Karem, hasta la casa de Isabel y Zaca-rías. BENDITO Entonces, al igual que David saltó y danzó ante la antigua Arca de la Alianza que llevaba preciosos signos de la presencia per-manente de Dios, así Juan salta en el vientre de su madre Isabel cuando María llega, un arca viva que lleva la presencia viva de Dios. Isabel saluda con alegría a María con las palabras que re-zamos a diario en el “Ave María”: “Bendita eres entre las muje-res y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre”. Por qué María es tan bendita”, explica entonces Isabel: “Dichosa tú que has creído que se iba a cumplir lo que te ha dicho el Señor”. Del mismo modo, podemos atrevernos a esperar ser “bienaventurados” por “creer que lo que nos fue dicho” por el Señor –la promesa de misericordia de Jesús– se cumplirá al compartir la misericordia de Dios con todos. En efecto, por nuestro bautismo y, más inme-diata y repetidamente, por nuestra participación en la Eucaristía, también nosotros llevamos dentro a Cristo vivo. ¿A quién, o a qué situación, tenemos que llevar a Cristo en esta Navidad? De hecho, a lo largo del año, ¿con qué desinterés dejamos de lado nuestras propias preocupaciones? ¿Con qué entusiasmo –“con prisa”– atravesamos, sin tener en cuenta las dificultades, cualquier terreno peligroso que haya que conquistar para servir a los demás?

Dear brothers and sisters, From Bethlehem, the smallest of towns, the Savior will be born. This is the prophecy of Micah. This little and insignificant town will witness a miracle, the birth of the Messiah. Jesus Christ will be born in Bethlehem the city of David, this is the place from where the Lord, the Savior comes. Also Elizabeth in the Gospel of today witnesses and experiences a miracle through the visitation of Mary. Christ, the Messiah, who is still in the womb of Mary who is pregnant goes to visit another remote place in the hill country of Judea where her cousin Elizabeth is staying. Well, today, Christ the Lord comes to also visit us no matter how far away and remote we may find ourselves from him or how small and insignificant our faith may be. Christ comes to us to visit us. Christ desire is to enter the life of every man and he comes to us through Mary the Church. May this unexpected visit and his loving presence in our lives fill us with joy. A special thanks to all who participated to these past days to the feasts honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe. May the Virgin Mary always keep us close to her Son and pray for us. Peace, Fr. Nicholas

Queridos hermanos y hermanas, De Belén, el pueblo más pequeño, na-cerá el Salvador. Esta es la profecía de Miqueas. Este pequeño e insignificante pueblo será testigo de un milagro, el nacimiento del Mesías. Je-sucristo nacerá en Belén, la ciudad de David, este es el lugar de donde viene el Señor, el Salvador. También Isabel en el Evangelio de hoy testifica y experimenta un milagro a través de la visitación de María. Cristo, el Mesías, que todavía está en el vientre de María embarazada, va a visitar otro lugar remoto en la región montañosa de Judea donde se alo-ja su prima Isabel. Bueno, hoy, Cristo el Señor viene a visitarnos también sin im-portar cuán lejos y alejados estemos de Él o cuán pequeña e in-significante sea nuestra fe. Cristo viene a visitarnos. El deseo de Cristo es entrar en la vida de todo hombre y viene a nosotros a través de María, la Iglesia. Que esta visita inesperada y su pre-sencia amorosa en nuestras vidas nos llenen de alegría. Un agradecimiento especial a todos los que participaron estos últimos días a las fiestas en honor a Nuestra Señora de Guadalu-pe.
