“Do you Love Me? … Prove it.”
So often in our relationships we seek clear
and concrete signs of affection in order to
prove someone’s resolve to love. We know
that actions speak louder than words; moreover, we need
something concrete to validate what we say. In other words,
“if you love me, then prove it.” We can say, “I love you” but if we do not show up, prove our
care, make our beloved a priority in our life, then the words
are meaningless. We need something concrete to validate
intangible truths: Love is accompanied by a rose, a sign of
affection, a tangible and concrete act which validates and
adds weight to the words we say. God uses clear and sure signs so that we can cling to Him. He
communicates His own life by means of clear and certain
signs. Every sacrament we receive testifies to the truth that
God loves us. That is why each sacrament is brought about in
both WORD and DEED: notice that each sacrament is
communicated through some words accompanied by some
action. In Baptism we see the priest pour water over the
child’s head while he says, “I baptize you in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” We have a
clear and concrete sign of the thing signified. With each
sacrament there is not only a word, but also an action, which
communicates God’s life. God uses these moments in order that we might be SURE that
God is acting in our life. Sacraments are those clear and
concrete signs when we can be assured of God’s care for us.
In the Gospel when Jesus sends the lepers to the priest, He is
teaching about the effective authority of the rituals
accompanied by God’s Action. This is only further proven
when Jesus takes bread, says the blessing, breaks the bread
and says, “This is my Body…do this in memory of Me.”
What Jesus teaches us to do in the ritual action is to receive
from Him His own life communicated through the Eucharist.
In other words, the sacraments are those clear and certain
signs when we hear God say to us, “I love you”.
God love you, Father Fleming
"¿Me amas? ...
acciones hablan más que las palabras;
mente, si no demostramos nuestro afecto y cuidado, si no hace-
podamos aferrarnos a Él.
to".
decirnos: "Te amo". Dios te ama, Padre Fleming
