From the Pastor’s Desk
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at
the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it. — 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24

ADULT BIBLE STUDY 9:30 a.m.
9:30 a.m. (begins Sept. 8)
“Again he sent other servants, saying,
‘Tell those who are invited, See, I have
prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat
calves have been slaughtered, everything
is ready. Come to the wedding feast.’”
Matthew 22:4
A few weeks ago I preached a sermon en-
titled, “Prudently Picking Proper Priori-
ties.” In that message I asked, “God helps
those who help themselves.” Do you
know in which book of the Bible that pas-
sage is found?
If you said, “None; the expression isn’t in
the Bible,” you get an A for the day and
get to move to the front of the class. On
the other hand, if you did come up with a
book and a verse, don’t be too upset.
Many people think those words are found
in Scripture.
I think Pennsylvania’s Arthur Phillips the
III and his bride Brittany are among those
who got the question wrong. The couple
was arrested for shoplifting. Security
cameras had managed to capture them
stealing more than $1,000 worth of food
from a local supermarket.
Would you like to know what these new-
lyweds were going to do with more than
$1,000 worth of food? That’s right! They
were going to use it to feed the visitors
who were coming to their wedding recep-
tion. (That’s very different from the host
Jesus talks about in His parable. That man
had cooked his own oxen and fat calves –
not those of someone else.)
As a parish pastor I’ve encountered cou-
ples who, like this one, had some pretty
messed-up priorities. Some couples were
more concerned about the length of a
church aisle than they were about the ser-
mon the minister would preach. More
time was spent picking a dress and a cake
and an invitation than was spent selecting
the church to which the couple would be-
long. And far more time was spent work-
ing on the wedding than was spent on
making the marriage work.
Wrong priorities are almost always a bad
thing.
Far better to have your priorities priori-
tized. Thankfully, Jesus gives us His sug-
gestion on what that list should be. In
Matthew 6:33 Jesus said, “But seek first
the Kingdom of God and His righteous-
ness, and all these things will be added to
you.” Single or married, newlyweds or
diamond-anniversary-celebrators, all of us
would do well to follow Jesus’ advice.
With the Savior, the rest of things fall into
place; without Him, nothing fits in place.
With the Savior the burdens of life can be
carried, shared or removed; without Him,
those burdens are stapled to our minds and
hearts.
With the Savior there is forgiveness, with-
out Him there’s only an increasing weight
of sins unremoved.
Proper priorities.
If yours are proper, give thanks to Jesus.
Although troubles may still come your
way, you can be fairly certain you won’t
be sitting in jail for trying to shoplift a
dinner for your friends.
THE PRAYER: Dear Lord Jesus, You
never forgot the saving of sinful souls was
Your first priority. Now may I never for-
get believing in You ought always be
mine. In Your Name. Amen.

We hope to see more of our members
at this earlier time of 4 pm; remember your Mite
boxes. After our meeting we will be setting up
the old school basement for our Fifth Annual Ger-
man Festival during the weekend. Our group, along
with the "Young-At-Heart" group, is handling the
dessert area of our German Festival, so we need lots
of volunteers to help out. We need you to bake
those authentic German cakes, help slice and pack-
age them for sale and also help sell them. Please
sign up on Sunday to volunteer your time for either
Friday evening or during the day Saturday, Sept. 13
or 14.
Our group will also be having a "TAKE HOME"
Bake Sale during the Festival where we sell breads,
muffins, pies, jams, etc. for cash (not tickets) to ben-
efit our group. Please plan to help out by baking for
this table which will have items priced and packaged
to take home in the OSB. Remember, many helpers
mean lighter work for all.
We are back to our regular fall lunch schedule now,
so we will be meeting on Thursday, September 5 at
11:30 in the old school basement. We did have a
Cold Lunch on August 1 where we enjoyed music
from Vernon Koch, and info from Bob Wollenberg
and Pastor. Join us, if you’re over age 50, to enjoy
great food and fellowship. If you need a ride, just let
the office know and we will arrange a ride for you so
you don’t miss out on the fun. One Surprise Lunch is
free, but usually we collect a donation of $2 if you
donate food, or $5 if you just come.
It’s our annual September Planned Potluck followed
by your childhood version BINGO with prizes. We
all need to bring foods for our buffet tables according
to our last name. Your name begins with A-I, please
bring a COLD dish; J -P bring a HOT dish, and R-Z
bring a Dessert. We only supply the beverages this
month so you know that we only eat what you bring
to the tables. After lunch, Vernon Koch will be our
Bingo caller and there will be prizes.
Now that September is here, get ready for our Fifth
Annual German Festival out in our church lot in the
evening of September 13, Friday, and from noon until
9 pm, Saturday, September 14. There will be special
entertainment during the day and of course the won-
derful German foods. How can you help out? Our
group and the "Women of Immanuel" group handle
the dessert area which is housed in the Old School
Basement. We need lots of volunteers to bake won-
derful authentic German cakes, slice the cakes and
package them and sell them during both days. We
hope you can help for a least a couple hours and/or at
other areas of the festival; sign up on Sundays or in
the church office. Find your German clothes, invite
your friends and neighbors and come to enjoy all the
festival entertainers as you help out during the day.
September also brings the Bristol Mum Festival Pa-
rade right by our church doors on September 22 for a
fun time. Our Adult Fellowship group plays cards on
Mondays in our Parish Center at 1 pm; join them if
that interests you.
Come and enjoy all of our Young-At-Heart activities
that we plan for you as shown in Sunday’s bulletins;
why stay home alone!

Christian faith? In any case, we’ve got the opportunity for you!
On Sunday, September 22, Pastor Karner will begin teaching a 12-week class at 6:45 pm in the school library.

God is “for us” in Jesus Christ, offering us forgiveness, joy, hope, assurance, direction,
and new life through Him.
While this first class will be on September 22, the day and time of the following classes
will be discussed to see what works best for everyone.

Emmaus Walkers
WHAT AN OPPORTUNITY!!
Can you believe your good fortune that God
has put you on this earth in this time in the
vicinity of West and Meadow streets in
Bristol, CT – U.S.A. – planet Earth – the
solar system – God’s universe – where on
Thursday, September 12, men will again
congregate at 7:00 a.m. in Immanuel’s Par-
ish Center to breakfast together and to meet
with Pastor Joel Kotila who again will hap-
pily lead the Emmaus Walkers Men’s Bible
Class.
If that doesn’t make you spiritually giddy,
it’s because you haven’t joined us yet.
Hard to believe? Talk to any member of
this group, and he will confirm.
If you are like the rest of us in this group –
you will freely admit that we need – really
need – this spiritual tune-up, fellowship and
learning experience between Sundays.
Yes, we start at 7:00 a.m. – maybe a bit ear-
ly – and a little hard to get up.
Homer Simpson tells his son Bart, “Aw. . .
son, don’t worry, if it’s too hard, it ain’t
worth doin’.” Obviously – Homer has nev-
er been to The Emmaus Walkers.

Calling all kids, ages 3 to 18!!
We will be kicking off our new Youth Sunday School program
“Enduring Faith”
(refreshments will be served)
Immanuel Lutheran Church Messenger September 2019 7
Dear Immanuel Lutheran Church Members and Friends,
Immanuel Lutheran School began the
2019-20 school year with 91 students
enrolled. New families inquire weekly,
so we look for the number to exceed
100 before the end of the school year.
Our new Little Lambs Learning Center
has been approved by the Office of
Early Childhood, and the Health De-
partment, and the Fire Marshall. The
space in the old school has been repur-
posed and is a wonderful place for the
young children to learn to socialize and
learn about Jesus and the world around
them. Rod Grekula installed a Dutch
door and made new shelving to fit the
space and the needs of the two year
olds. We are very appreciative to Rod
for all of his time and effort on this
project. Air conditioners have been
delivered and will be installed in each
room. We currently are using one room and will open the
second room in the fall. We want to learn from this new
age group before expanding too fast.
New staff members for the 2019-2020 school year include
Mrs. Talie White in Little Lambs, Brooke Wells in PK (as an
after school position), Mrs. Jen Drechsler in PK, Miss Kris-
tie Caissie in PK, Mrs. Gina Joiner in PK, Mrs. Mary Ma-
chado in grades 4-5, and Mrs. Beth Read in middle school
language arts and social studies. Returning are Mrs. Holly
Tonn in Little Lambs, Mrs. Tammy Thormahlen in PK, Mrs.
Chrissy Orie in PK, Mrs. Debbie Krueger in Kindergarten,
Mrs. Rosemary Ryskowski in first grade, Mrs. Casey Camp-
bell in second grade, Mrs. Sandy Butler in middle school
math and science, Miss Hannah Baldino in PE/Health, and Mr. George Tavernier in music.
The National Lutheran Schools Association Accreditation is currently undergoing review with the State Board
of Education. We are hopeful that the NLSA will be put back on the state’s approved accreditation list. It was
bumped off several years ago due to a clerical error at the synod level. With this review we will be back in
good standing on the list. Deaconess Tiffany Manor has worked very hard on this matter and we are very
thankful for her efforts.
A wonderful school year is ahead of us. Thank you for supporting our school. Our students develop a strong
relationship with Jesus Christ due in large part to the school. This work is so important, and your support
makes it all possible. Thank you!
Yours in Christ,
Dr. Anne Stuhlman, Principal
