Southern Hills’ Easter Ministries!

On Easter Sunday, April 20th, things will be hopping here at Southern Hills! We will offer three separate worship services, as well as an Egg Hunt for children. Traditional worship services will be held in the sanctuary at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., and The Source, our contemporary service, will worship at 11:15 a.m. across the street in the park in front of Sullivan University. The Egg Hunt will begin at approximately 12:30, following the

Church In The Park service, on the front lawn of Sullivan University.

The Church In The Park service and the Egg Hunt will both be community outreach events, and we are hoping that our church family will join with The Source and Children’s Ministries to support and promote these events. Yard signs advertising the events will be made available for our church members to post in their yards, and flyers will be designed for distribution, as well. Volunteers will be needed to help with the egg hunt; if you can help, please call or email Priscilla Bagley at 277-6176 or [email protected].

Our Easter services and the Egg Hunt are great opportunities to reach out to your friends and neighbors. So whether it’s to our Traditional services, or to Church In The Park… we hope you will invite a friend to church this Easter!

Rev. Joan Wooden,

Director of Music and Worship

Palm Sunday Processional

All of our children are invited to participate in this year’s Palm Sunday Processional, which will begin first in the Source (9:22) and then travel to the sanctuary for both the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. services. Our Love Notes Choir will be at the end of the processional and will remain in the altar area to present some delightful songs of praise during the first two services. [email protected]).

Holy Week Taizé Service Planned

You are invited to participate in our monthly Service of Prayer and Holy

Communion in the Style of Taizé. The service will be held on Wednesday,

April 16th at 6:15 p.m. The service will immerse us in the dramatic events of

Holy Week, and there will be ample time for silent prayer and contemplation.

Please make plans to attend.

Holy Thursday Communion/Tenebrae Service Planned

On Holy Thursday, April 17th, at 6:30 p.m. we will have a service of worship that commemorates the supper Jesus shared with

his disciples before his crucifixion, where he instituted the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Following Holy Communion, we will

transition to a service of Tenebrae, or “Darkness,” which represents the suffering and death of Christ. Dating from the 8th century,

Tenebrae was originally celebrated on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Holy Week. It represents the darkness that fell over the

earth as the Son of God was crucified. Our Chancel Choir, Children’s Choir, Chime Choir and several additional outstanding

musicians from our congregation are planning some beautiful musical meditations for this special service of worship, which will be

based on the Passion as told in the book of Matthew. With each meditation, the candles will be progressively extinguished. At the

conclusion of the service, the Christ candle will remain lit, indicating that death only seems to triumph over Christ, and points

towards the coming Resurrection.

Please make plans to attend this meaningful service of worship and walk with Christ to the cross. It will increase your understanding

and help you to grasp the magnitude of his sacrifice, thus making your joy on Easter even brighter!

Two Traditional Services Planned for Easter Morning

Easter Sunday traditional worship will be held at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m., again this year, and will include a brass quartet,

congregational singing, musical offerings by our Chime Choir, Chancel Choir and Children’s Choir, and will culminate with a

powerful sermon delivered by our senior pastor, Dr. Bill Moore. Please make plans to join us as we celebrate the resurrection of

our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Make It a Stress Free Month

April is designated as National Stress Awareness Month. For some, admitting that we are in a stressful situation is the first step in de-stressing. This year, treat yourself and chill out during the month of April. Certainly, stress will always be somewhere in our lives yet learning to cope will keep it in check. Stress can play a harmful part in our lives with the physical damage it can do. It has a relation with heart disease, depression and lowering of the immune system to only mention a few issues.

Now that you have determined there is stress shadowing your happiness, let’s plan ways to “kick it to the curb”. Think of ways you know stress is slipping into your daily life. Are your muscles tightening? Do you feel your blood pressure edging up? Become aware of events that habitually cause stress in your daily life. Here are a few ways to de-stress: Treat yourself (have that forbidden piece of chocolate); Exercise gets those endorphins pumping and gives you a feeling of relaxation and Get enough rest as this regenerates our cells and leaves us feeling rejuvenated. As I once read “Don’t sweat the small stuff, and remember that it is all small stuff”. The Health and Wellness Ministry Team suggests you “Relax and enjoy each day”!

Letters from

Arlington Elementary in appreciation for the Back Pack Ministry:

My name is Tonya Cutright. I have four young daughters. I wanted to say thank you for the back pack program. It benefits so many families, and I for one appreciate it more than you will ever know. Like many families we live paycheck to paycheck and when the kids are home during the day, such as weekends and holidays the food budget goes up and that money just isn’t always available. This program means that my kids will not go hungry. Thank you! Tonya Cutright

Thank you for taking time for packing bag lunches every week for my kids Joseph, Lucus and Linda. We appreciate and look forward to getting a bag on Friday. It helps. Thank you. Linda, Joseph and Lucus and mother, Vickie Senchez God Bless you. P.S. Please go by the bulletin board in the hallway to Herren Hall and check out the “Thank You” card and letters sent from Arlington Elementary.

From the Business Office – Rick Arnold Greetings to all from the Business Office. I am well into my second year as Business Administrator and Mark Herren, Treasurer of Southern Hills, as well as the Finance Committee and I, wish to re-establish monthly reports to the congregation. Therefore, listed below, you will see our current income and expense report through March 15, 2014. The 2014 budget was approved by the Finance Committee and the Administrative Board in January. The total amount pledged for 2014 is down by 27 pledges totaling $67, 327.00 or 6.4 % from 2013. I have adjusted the budget accordingly; however, if anyone has not pledged for 2014 it is not too late. I am still accepting pledges and would welcome the opportunity to adjust the budget again. I have plenty of pledge cards available in my office. For those of you who write monthly and weekly checks, there is a simple and easy way to keep up with your contributions. We can automatically draft your checking account once a week or once a month. The weekly drafts are processed every Monday and the monthly drafts are processed on the 1st of each month. Save yourself the time and the headaches of writing checks, contact me for more information to sign up for this service.

CHRIS HOGG, RECREATION DIRECTOR INVITES YOU TO...

Church wide campout!

For this summer, we are planning a whole church event designed around outdoor activities. However, you don’t have to be the camping type to join the fun. The plan is to have a camp site reserved for people who want to spend the night in tents or a camper, and also some lodge rooms reserved for those who prefer to spend the night indoors with A/C and plumbing. We are tentatively planning on having the event at Natural Bridge State Park in June, but there will be more details coming as our committee communicates with the park. Please let Chris Hogg, Teddy Poore, or Brian Cathey know if you are interested in being a part of this event!

Group Hike

Another outdoor activity opportunity will be a group hike on Sunday, May 18th at 3:00pm, at Raven Run. We will meet at the church and carpool and/or take the church buses to the site for our hike. The event is open to anyone who is interested.

Aldersgate Camp Work Day – April 5th

If anyone is interested in helping Aldersgate Camp get ready for the summer season, they are hosting a work day on Saturday, April 5th. A few of us from SHUMC are planning to go, so if anyone else wants to join, please contact Chris Hogg and we can take a group all together on the church bus. They need our support!

Guatemala Rummage Sale

Our annual Rummage Sale to support the Guatemala Mission Team will be on Saturday, May 31st. As always, we have very limited storage space at the church, so we ask that if at all possible you hold your donations until at least Thursday, May 29th. We will be scheduling pickups of large items on Thursday and Friday before the event. We appreciate all of your support through this event, as last year we raised $3,350.51 to help our team get out and serve the World!

Guatemala Team Work Projects

There was a great response from the congregation last year to the bulletin inserts offering work for donations to the Guatemala Trip. There were requests for babysitting, house sitting, yard work and other chores, and every team member who took on one of those tasks was greatly

blessed by the generosity of the people of Southern Hills. We will again be doing this as a part of our fund raising effort, and I know many of you will have work that needs done this spring! Look for the bulletin inserts in April. There is a large group going to Guatemala this year, so hopefully that means we can get around to every project that is received this year!
