    Guided tour at Kunsthaus Wien,

    Hundertwasserhaus

Hundertwasserhaus, designed andconstructed under renegade artistFriedensreich Hundertwasser, is justabout the oddest and most intriguingcombination of bricks, mortar andnatural elements ever assembled.

Especially intriguing are the building'stree tenants , which grow on balconies

and into the sunlight. They provide botha source of oxygen for the residents anda tangible sense of nature living inharmony with the manmade world.

Upon first seeing the building , weare marveleds at the way thebuilding is fully integrated into itsneighborhood setting and yet stillmanages to propel itself into ourastonishes eyes. The branches ofthe trees planted at the base ofthe building seem to intertwinethemselves with the trees locatedstories above ground level. Theflowers, shrubs and otherplantings on the building'sexterior and roof meld effortlesslywith the vibrant colors of theapartment complex's exteriorwalls. Each individual apartmentis delineated on the exterior withits own hue of blue, red, white oryellow, giving it a the whole isgreater than the sum of its partsfeel.

    Incinerator Spittelau

The Spittelau Incinerator is a waste-to-energy incinerator in Vienna. Originallycompleted in 1971 the building was

damaged by fire and in 1987 the

elevations were redesigned by architectand artist Friedensreich

    Hundertwasser.

    A storage depot receives deliveries

from 250 waste vehicles daily, and

holds reserves for three days. The plant

itself comprises two boilers to produce

steam from the waste. Attached to

these is a counter-pressure turbine to

    generate electricity, four heat

    exchangers for district heating supply,

    and waste gas purification plants.

    Heuriger: Wine-culture in Vienna

A visit at a Heuriger up in the hillside

A visit to the Heuriger is part of everydaycultural-life in Vienna, people go there a lotoftener than they go to an sporting event orto the theatre. I come to think of that thename as well as tradition goes back to theRomans. Heuriger means this year's andof course it was used for the wine-harvestof the year, even if it today also signifiesthe place where the wine is sold.

    PRATER

The "core" Prater was a small

island in the Danube north of

    todays Freudenau area, but soon

    the name "Pratter" (with double-T)

was used for surrounding forests. The actual Prater is still primarily a

    park and woodland. Its size

    decreased significantly in the 20th

    century, when several very large

    building projects required

significant amounts of space: TheErnst-Happel-Stadion (sports

    stadium), the horse race-course,

    and even a highway. Nevertheless,

the Prater is still popular with

joggers, people who walk dogs .

Attractions nearby are limited - note the

UNO City and the Donauinsel. As aresidential area, the parts north of the

    Prater are considered cheap and

unattractive; real attractions start only at

    the Karmeliterviertel. From there, getting

to the First District is easy.
