E2012

Hey everyone! This is just a basic guide for everyone who is going to be living off campus this year to make sure you have a fantastic year! Many of you will be doing so for the first time and living off campus can be slightly daunting. But the Union is here for you just as much as when you lived on campus, and we will do everything we can to advise, protect and support you with any problems you have, but also to help you make the most out of the year and the community you live in. Have a great year! Ben Sundell (Welfare & Campaigns Officer) [email protected]

Your guide to living off campus!

Your Residence… What is really important is that we value, respect and contribute to the community around us when we move off campus. The amazing part about living out, is that you are surrounded with lots of different types of people and opportunities, and you have an amazing opportunity to make a positive impact whilst you are there. Meet your neighbours! As daunting as it can be for you to move in, your neighbours may be nervous too. You have a fantastic opportunity to meet new people and families who live locally to you, pop round and introduce yourself, and get to know them. We want you to enjoy the vibrant nightlife that Leamington or Coventry have to offer – just remember that your house is always very close to family and elderly housing too – when you are coming home from a night out, please try and keep the noise down and be respectful of your neighbours.

Put your rubbish out on the correct days, and don’t let it build up outside the front of your house – not only is it an eye sore, but you could get fined by the Council.

Get involved in your community! Warwick SU’s Love Community campaign, Warwick Volunteers, and many societies do so much good for their local areas – whether it be cleaning up, working in schools, running soup kitchens etc. – don’t let your year pass without taking the opportunity to make a difference where you live, with students and locals alike.

Your Rights The Union offers a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL Advice Service in SUHQ which has years of experience dealing with HOUSING (as well as lots of other areas). If you have any problems at all – get in touch. They are here to HELP YOU! – [email protected] / 024 7657 2824 Your landlord is normally responsible for repairs, including central heating, leaking roofs etc. If you are not sure who is responsible, get advice straight away.

The landlord should not enter your home without giving reasonable notice and with your agreement, except in an emergency.

Full time students do not normally pay council tax – if you are asked by the local council to pay council tax, get advice straight away.

The previous residents may not have fully paid their bills – take photos of the meter readings, and inform utility companies of the reading and date you moved in.

Take photos of your property with a camera that prints dates to show the condition of the property when you moved in – these could be helpful for getting your deposit back at the end of the year.

Make sure you update your medical info – whether you register locally or continue to use the Campus Health Centre, make sure you have your right address with your GP.

If you want to watch live broadcast TV, you need to buy a license. However, if you want to watch catch up stuff on your laptop, you don’t.

Check whether your contract covers your Contents Insurance, and if not, get yourself covered.

Keep your windows and doors locked when you aren’t there. If you have any concerns with your house’s safety, again, get in touch with us.

community

?Check your deposit is protected by a Deposit Protection Scheme - it should be written on your tenancy agreement.

Hello! I’m James, your Education Officer this year. For three years I studied PPE and lived in Arthur Vick and Leamington. I’ve been on Union Council since I was a fresh-faced first year, and was the Chair of Council through 4 General Meetings! During my time at Warwick I’ve worked in the Copper Rooms, taught in local schools and been involved in Warwick in Africa. I’ve always enjoyed the activism on campus, and this year it’s my job to fight and campaign for better educational quality at Warwick.

Hi everyone! My name is Ben and I’m your Welfare and Campaigns Officer. I’m here for you if there is anything that doesn’t go quite to plan whilst you are at Warwick. I’m always available to chat, offer advice, and to help you if there are problems you may encounter at University. I cover accommodation, transport, mental, physical and sexual health, crime, responsible drinking and anything relating to your wellbeing. Do also get in touch if you want to get involved with campaigning, in a liberation group (LGBTUA+, Disablities, Women, and Ethnic Minorities) or in any of our other campaigns and community projects. I really care about your needs and about helping you to get the most out of your time here so come see me anytime!

After studying Politics and International Studies as an Undergraduate I stayed on at Warwick to do a Masters in International Security. Over my 4 years at Warwick I have been involved in the Union as an SSLC representative, a 3rd year councillor, as a Postgraduate Faculty Rep for Social Sciences and an active member in a number of societies. I have always been involved in representation and campaigning on issues that affect students!

Welcome back to Warwick!

After an amazing gap year I arrived at Warwick in 2008 to study PPE, and was lucky enough to have an Erasmus year in Grenoble too. My course was great, but what really made my 4 years here so fantastic was my involvement in the Union. From playing with the Symphony Orchestra in Delhi to taking hundreds of home and international students on tour to Dublin, from learning languages for free with World@Warwick to running ski trips in the Alps, and from being part of the governance team as a Trustee to volunteering in schools in Leamington, my time here has been unforgettable. Now I’m working at the SU to ensure you have the best time possible too!

Societies Officer - Silkie Cragg

Welfare and Campaigns Officer - Ben Sundell

I recently graduated from my second degree at Warwick in Accounting and Finance, having previously studied Economics. During the last few years I have been involved in a wide variety of sports clubs and societies; trying new things that has made my time at Warwick brilliant and I would definitely recommend it. As President of Warwick SU, I am here to represent every student and their interests to the University and wider community. I love Warwick, the Union and the whole student experience, so I was especially honoured when I was elected to be your President. If there is anything I can do for you, feel free to come by my office in SUHQ or just contact me by email, Facebook or Twitter!

Democracy and Development Officer - Cosmo MarchSince my very first term at Warwick in 2009 I’ve been sure to keep myself busy. Having grown up in Munich so close to the mountains, it was a natural transition for me to join WarwickSnow which I have been heavily involved in throughout my time here. As well as studying PPE, I also joined the PPE Society which I ended up running in my final year. Since my first year the Union has kept me financially afloat, having worked in the various bars, pubs and clubs it has to offer. From organising ski trips for hundreds of students to nail-biting lacrosse matches against Loughborough, it has been these experiences that have made my time at Warwick amazing and shaped who I am today. My advice for all students is to get as involved in as many things as possible; you are only at University for a brief period of your life, so make the most of it whilst it lasts!

Following the Membership Services review the Student Activities Room has now changed and is open to all students, not just club and society execs. With new staff including a Student Development Manager, a Societies Co-ordinator and a Campaigns & Policy Coordinator there are now even more people to help you benefit from your Union, get the skills you need, and the help and advice to support all aspects of your time at Warwick.

Having been involved in sport at University since my freshers week, it has been a huge chapter of my last three years. As well as being predominately involved within the Hockey Club, I was the Sports Liaison for One World Week and also participated in the Lacrosse and Floorball summer leagues. As your Sports Officer, it is my role to encourage you to participate in the unparalleled variety of sporting opportunities Warwick can offer. Becoming part of Warwick Sport will not only allow you to become fitter, faster, stronger and healthier, but it will also open a door to the notorious weekly social, termly tours and the all-important annual Sports Ball. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!

GUID
