Marian Pilgrimage

Fr. Pat will be leading a Marian Pilgrimage next

summer, June 24-July 5 to Portugal, Spain and

France. The pilgrimage includes the holy sites

of Fatima, Santiago de Compostela, Garaban-

dal, Lourdes and La Sagrada Familia Catedral in Barcelona.

Cost is $3,890.00 per person, double occupancy. For more

Al-Anon Support Group

There is no magic formula that enables

you to help someone stop—or cut back—on

his or her drinking or drug use. Alcoholism

and Drug Addiction are a complex problems,

with many related issues. But Al‑Anon can

help you learn how to cope with the challenges of some-

one else’s addiction.

Our Parish Al-Anon Support Group meets the

second and fourth Tuesday of every month in Room # 6.

Our meeting dates for the month of February are the 12th

and 26th. All are welcome!

Volunteers Needed On Saturday, February 2nd at 10:30am, the Men

of Faith are asking for volunteers to come and

Archdiocese of San Antonio

On January 31, Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller, MSpS, will

share a report of child sexual abuse by clergy in the Archdio-

cese of San Antonio with the people of our parishes. With this

report, the Archdiocese of San Antonio will present a transpar-

ent account of clergy sexual abuse of children in our local

church from 1940 to present. Archbishop Gustavo, with this

report, will express regret and apologizes for the failings and

sins that have hurt the church so deeply, especially in our most

vulnerable members. He will especially ask forgiveness for the

failings of those who have held positions of leadership in the

Church. After much prayerful discernment, and bearing con-

sciously the burden of anger and shame accumulated over the

last 75 years, the Archdiocese makes this report praying that

those who are suffering will be able to hear this as a sincere

apology. After 2 p.m. on January 31, the report will be immedi-

ately available on the webpage of the archdiocese at:

archsa.org.

abuso sexual infantil cometido por clérigos en la Arquidiócesis

de San Antonio. Con este informe la Arquidiócesis de San An-

tonio presentará una relación transparente del abuso sexual de

menores cometido por clérigos en nuestra iglesia local desde

1940 hasta el presente. Por ese medio el Arzobispo Gustavo

expresará su pesar, y pedirá perdón por las faltas y los pe-

cados que han herido tan profundamente a la Iglesia, especial-

mente en nuestros miembros más vulnerables. Particularmente

pedirá perdón por las faltas de aquellos que han ocupado posi-

ciones de liderazgo en la Iglesia. Después de mucho discerni-

miento orante, y de llevar conscientemente la carga de indig-

nación y vergüenza acumulada en los últimos 75 años, la Ar-

quidiócesis hace este reporte y reza para que aquellos que

están sufriendo puedan escuchar esto como una sincera dis-

BULLETIN ANNOUNCEMENT NO. 1

ENGLISH This is the first of many communications in our bulletin for the upcoming On the Way - ¡Andale! Capital Cam-paign. This is an exciting time for our parish and parishes throughout the archdiocese. This campaign will have a tremendous impact on the needs of our parish while also enabling our vibrant and growing archdio-cese to address the bright future of the Church in South Central Texas. Over the last few months, with the help of lay leadership at Holy Family Parish and the archdiocese, we have identified our most pressing needs as a parish. We have chosen to remodel our parish hall with our share of the funds raised through our upcoming On the Way - ¡Ándale! Capital Campaign. The campaign will be led by Fr. Pat Seitz and chaired by Sally Carrion. Together, we have recruited a team of

volunteers to assist with this important effort and to help prepare our campaign communication materials.

Adult Confirmation Classes

Confirmation is the Gift of the Holy Spirit activat-

ing the graces we receive in Baptism. Together with the

Eucharist, it completes our initiation into the Church.

If you are a baptized Catholic adult, 18 years of

age or older, attended religious education classes as a

child/youth and have not celebrated the Sacrament of

Confirmation (and/or Eucharist), our parish is offering a

six-week course to prepare adults to be

confirmed. These sessions begin Thursday, February

28th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the office conference room. The

classes will be offered in English.

To register, please stop by the Parish Office to

pick up a form to complete. In addition, please obtain a

copy of your baptismal certificate from the parish of your

baptism. You will need to bring it with you the first night

we gather.

Liturgy Committee Meeting

Our next Liturgy Committee Meeting will be on

Wednesday, January 30th at 6:30pm in the Office

Conference Room. We will discuss and plan for the Lent and

Easter Seasons.

Lenten Small Faith Sharing Groups Lent invites us to a time of prayer, reflec-

tion, and conversion. This Lenten Season

parishioners are encouraged to join our

small faith sharing groups. We will be us-

ing the program called, LENTEN LONG-

INGS, to help deepen our faith in Jesus

Christ. To join a group, form your own group or share in a

group with your family members, please call the parish

office and leave your name and contact information. We

will be ordering the material and need a count of partici-

pants by February 8th. The week before Lent we will dis-

tribute the materials to the various groups.

We especially encourage the people who obtained a

“baby” from the King’s Cake to come to the Mass since

it will be offered for their intentions.

Candlemas Day – Dia de la Candelaria

WHAT IT IS - The Catholic Church celebrates Candle-

mas Day on the second of February. Candlemass is a

feast commemorating the Presentation of Jesus at the

temple, when the infant Jesus was taken to the tem-

ple by his parents, in accordance with the Jewish cus-

toms. The feast occurs 40 days after Christmas and it

marks the end of the Christmas Season.

ORIGIN - The name, Candlemas, comes from the ob-

servance of the old traditions of blessing candles. The

candles are reminders of the Christmas lights and they

symbolize the words of Simeon to Joseph and Mary

that are found in the gospel of Luke (2:32) that say that

Jesus would be “a revealing light to the gentiles, the

glory of your people Israel.”

In the 4th century, Candlemas was a celebration to

honor the purification of Mary after the birth of Jesus.

February 2nd also marked, in certain parts of the

world, the end of the cold season and the awakening

of the earth. Hence, the blessing of seeds is sometimes

part of the Candlemas remembrance. In the 9th centu-

ry, this celebration gave birth to the blessing of the

candles and so the name, CANDLEMAS, Día de la Can-

delaria, came about. The blessed candles are to aid the

dying, protect during thunder and lightning storms,

and to ward off evil.

Misa se ofrecerá por sus intenciones.

Día de la Candelaria LO QUE ES – La Iglesia Católica celebra el Día de la

Candelaria el 2 de febrero. El Día de la Candelaria

conmemora la Presentación de Jesús en el templo

cuando el niño Jesús fue llevado por sus padres en

acorde con la tradición judía. Esta fiesta ocurre 40

días después de la Navidad y marca el fin de la tem-

porada Navideña.

ORIGEN – El nombre, “Día de la Candelaria” provie-

ne de la observación de la Antigua costumbre de

bendecir velas. Las velas son un recordatorio de las

velas de Navidad y simbolizan la palabra de Simón a

José y María que se encuentran en el evangelio de

San Lucas (2:32) que dice, “La luz que alumbrará a

las naciones y que será la Gloria de tu pueblo Is-

rael.”

En el cuarto siglo, el día de la Candelaria era una

celebración para honrar la purificación de María

después del nacimiento de Jesús. En ciertas partes

del mundo, el 2 de febrero también indicaba el fin

de la temporada de frio y el despertar de la tierra.

Por eso también a veces hay la bendición de las se-

millas durante esta celebración. En el siglo 9, esta

celebración llevo a la bendición de las velas y por

eso el nombre de “Día de la Candelaria”. La bendi-

ción de las velas es para ayudar a los muertos, pro-

teger durante tormentas y reprender el mal.
