Dear readerF&B to the rescue

Our special feature in this MAPIC edition is foodservice. Food and beverage (F&B) is increasingly assuming the new role as a powerful anchor transforming retail destinations world-over, as a significant driver to boost footfall to support retail sales.

According to a JLL study, people who eat during a shopping centre visit dwell on average 27 minutes longer in the shopping centre and spend 18% more in overall transactions. Food & beverage operators have doubled the amount of floor space they occupy in shopping centres over the last ten years, from 7% to 15% of GLA. These figures will reach 20% in the coming years. In the UK, Canada and the US, the amount of space dedicated to F&B is forecast to reach up to 20% or more of total space in some of these regions by 2025 – and it could surpass 30% in Asia.

The GCC foodservice market has been growing since 2012. It swelled by over 30% from 2012 to $21.5 billion in 2016, according to Diamond Lifestyle Limited.

Currently, Saudi Arabia leads the region in foodservice sales with 50% of the market ($10.8 billion). Closely followed by the UAE at 31% of the market ($6.7 billion), Kuwait at 8% ($1.7 billion), Qatar at 7% ($1.5 billion), Oman ($0.5 billion) and Bahrain ($0.4 billion) each representing roughly 2% of the market. We are proud to host the sixth edition of the Middle East Retail Forum (MRF) on November 27 & 28 at the One & Only Royal Mirage, Dubai. Innovation is a byword that drives the business of retail, and a retail forum needs to go a few steps further in visualising an innovative programme. And this is what we have precisely done in selecting the theme for MRF 2017 – ‘Unspoken, Unheard, Unseen – Decoding retail in the age of disruption’. See page 37 for more details.

The Images RetailME Awards Gala takes place on November 28 at the same venue when we will honour more than 25 retailers and brands in the presence of over 400 retailers from across the region. Turn to page 4 to reserve your seats.

EAT, EXPERIENCE, ENJOY...BON APPETITE

Time immemorial, food has been a necessity. What has changed over time is the consumption pattern and spend on gastronomic experiences, contingent to one’s disposable income. World-over, people, are seen to connect better over food – be it the whole family gathering around food at home or family and friends meeting outside to enjoy a good dining experience. Of course, people in this part of the world – in the Middle East – tend to eat out more often compared to the global average, which is driven by disposable income, a predominately younger population with an urge to experience new food options since so much is available and even business and social commitments. A big reason why more and more real estate space gets allocated to food.
