However, emotions can sometimes escalate into riot, vandalism or looting and these events can result in significant property damage for individuals and businesses. While vandalism, looting, and arson can happen at any time, it’s wise to take extra precautions to manage risk during uncertain times. Cannasure recommends implementing a four-layered defense—infrastructure, security personnel, procedures, and intelligence—to discourage, mitigate, and prevent damage to properties. Monitor information on social media regarding protest activity (intelligence). Tailor messaging to teams in different locations using intelligence gathered. Clearly communicate the recovery plan to your employees/stakeholders should your store suffer a loss.

SECURE POINTS OF ENTRY ☐ Cover all windows and doors with exterior grade plywood or burglar resistant materials. ☐ CDX plywood 5/8 inch or thicker is recommended. ☐ Exterior plywood carries an X stamp, which identifies it as suitable for outdoor use. ☐ Secure with bolts or screws and headers to provide additional protection. ☐ Apply security film to glass to slow, delay or discourage entry. ☐ Install security roll doors.

REMOVE CANNABIS INVENTORY, CASH AND COMPUTERS PRIOR TO POTENTIAL EVENTS**Confirm with state regulator if this is allowed* and the process necessary to remain complaint with all state laws and regulations. ☐ Call your insurance agent before you move your product and property. ☐ Confirm if your current insurance policy provides you coverage regarding “Preservation of Property.” ☐ Ensure security of employees and product during transfer. ☐ Make sure all business-critical data is backed up and easily accessible after the event. ☐ Post signage on doors.

INCREASE LIGHTING & SECURITY ☐ Enhance storefront with additional lighting and security to better identify trespassers and make the property less desirable to vandals. ☐ Hire highly visible security presence for events.

PROTECT AGAINST ROOF ACCESS FROM EXTERIOR LADDERS OR LADDER CAGES ☐ Prevent access to rooftop ladders with locked security gates. ☐ Make sure building adjacent trees are trimmed to prevent access to the roof.

INSPECT SURROUNDING AREA FOR ITEMS THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE OR HARM ☐ Check around your store for items that are easily accessible and could be used as a weapon or cause damage: benches, bike racks, landscaping stones, construction/maintenance materials or equipment, items staged for use later as make-shift projectiles, etc. ☐ Remove pallets and other combustibles. ☐ Secure, remove or conceal trash containers as far away as possible to reduce the possibility of arson. ☐ Inspect and confirm that any exterior/publicly accessible water or other supply equipment is operable, tamper-proof and monitored.
