Women’s U18 7’S Rugby Invitational Tournament

Las Vegas, Nevada

Kayla and Kristen Kirkpatrick of Sinclair. PHOTOS/ SUBMITTED

submitted Kristen (17) and Kayla (16)

Kirkpatrick along with their family, Sean, Terrina, Alex and Autumn of Sinclair, flew to Las Vegas to compete in the Women’s U18 7’s Rugby Invitational Tournament from February 9 - 14, 2015.

Once they arrived it became clear how big this event was. There were teams from all over - college, high school, university and club rugby - men and women’s teams, in all categories. The girls played teams from

California, Utah, Colorado and Virginia but lost out by one point to Victoria, BC, in the semi final round. They played against teams stacked with only 18-year-old-women, while their team was made up of 15-17-year-olds and only 12 players.

The girls were fortunate to go down to the strip one night. They rented a party bus and all piled in, 24 of them. They were so excited and it was fun to see everyone’s faces expe - riencing the bright lights of the Las Vegas Strip.

The night before they left for home, the team and the coaches went to see the Men’s 7’s World Rugby games. They watched Team Canada, Fiji, US, Australia, Africa and New Zealand, to name a few.

They were proud of their performance and all came home with the experience of playing different teams, meet - ing kids from all over the country, plus a few bruises and bumps, but had fun and would do it all again. They were proud to represent Canada and Manitoba. Congratulations!

Carol Stairs travelled to Winnipeg last Wednesday for Easter and birthdays with her family, Tracey Kennedy and Alan Cechvala. Thursday evening I visited with her granddaughter, Jessica Bergen and great-granddaughter, Madilynn in St. Annes. Sunday, we all were at Edna Cechvala’s for supper and celebrate April birthdays for Tracey Kennedy, Marcel and Jessica Bergen. Carol returned home Monday. Saw a lot of deer out feeding, I guess getting ready for the snow fall that happened Tuesday.

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter and look forward for those spring flowers sticking their heads out of the ground soon.

Alstone Notes Marion Mayert had

Bonnie and Grant Fotheringham of Cochrane, AB, visit her a couple of times over the weekend. They all had a lovely bar - becue supper at Pat and Ross Taylor’s on Sunday.

Janice and Glenn Caldwell are home from the sunny south - said it was too hot down there.

Marion enjoyed visiting with the guests at Buck Slessor’s 80th birthday party. Betty had made a banquet fit for a king, which everyone really enjoyed.

Janice Caldwell and Julianne and Will Ludlam had lunch with Grandma Marion on Monday.

Marg Froese has been in Virden and Brandon Hospitals recently. Welcome home to your comfortable suite and devoted husband and family.

Les and Carole McCune had Scott Westbrook in on Friday for a visit over coffee and probably some of Carole’s good baking.

Muriel Mayberry played 500 at Deloraine the past week. She enjoyed Buck Slessor’s birthday party on Saturday, March 28, at the Alstone Lounge. It was a packed and well behaved group, Buck! Happy birthday from all the residents.

Nellie Morris had her 88th birthday on March 27, at the noon Alstone meal attended by 18 of us - four of which were family. The beau - tiful bird house arrangement delivered to our table was from granddaugther April and hubby Mike Hutton of Carman, MB. I’m sorry for the confusion I caused Wilma and Barb, I am having a hard time dealing with Danny’s sudden death.

On March 24, Lydia and Leona have their names on the guest book and I believe Lydia was at the Alstone noon meal.

March 26 - Alice Janzen of Whitemouth, MB, wishes us all a Happy Easter.

On March 26, Nellie enjoyed an afternoon invi - tation to Olive Elliott’s home for a good visit and refresh - ments - not far to walk on a nice day. Let us hope they continue.

Saturday, March 28, Lee and Donna Morris came to Nellie’s and took her out for noon lunch at the Dennis County Cafe. They had com - pany and late hours all week. When I says, “no gift s” in they come with a box full!

However, they are all very useful and they were placed where they should go.

On Sunday, March 29, John Van Sprundel of Manor, SK and his two daughters, Teresa Fox of Wawota and Grace Rose of Wauchope and Henry and Anne Boutin of Carlyle, SK came for more birthday greetings to Nellie in her suite. A lot of recalling of times gone by were dis - cussed. More beautiful flow - ers and other items appeared. At 6:00 p.m., we went to Laurel’s where the long din - ing room table had lots of good food that Anne, Teresa and Grace had brought along as well as what the house supplied. Hope had made a cake for great-grandma that sparkled; Grace’s butter - scotch dessert was great and some of Friday’s carrot cake plus ice cream sure fixed our sweet tooth! Food left over was distributed to any takers.

Betty and Buck Slessor went to Medicine Hat for the funeral of Betty’s brother on March 23.

On March 28, Betty had a birthday party for Buck’s 80th. People from Morris and Brandon, Foxwarren, Saskatoon, Stoughton and Weyburn and friends from all around home attended.

Art and Donna Wilkins called on Nellie on Sunday, March 29, and we talked about losing a member of our family each far too young. They visited with the Manor and Carlyle folks as John and Art met at sales and Henry “the old tractor collector” is well known to Art Wilkins.

Leona Braun with her children, Marj and Brian, left for Dewberry, AB on April 3, to visit her son Cam and Gloria and family.

Names on guest book - March 31 - Joann Sauvé, Shirley Shore, Harold Mayert, Doris Lumgair, Dolores Echnes of Glenboro. April 1 - Marlene Balding of Airdrie, AB. April 4 - Judy Henuset of Dauphin, MB. April 5 - Colin James, Sydney Jago of Medicine Hat, AB.

Buck Slessor was in Virden and Brandon Hospitals for a few days and came home on Saturday.

Muriel Mayberry’s son arrived home from Texas. She was invited to Terry McConnell’s Saturday night for an Easter supper. Sunday, she went to Souris to her daughter Brenda and Jack Roberts for Easter supper. Jack washed her very dirty car.

Bob and Marg Froese spent the Easter weekend in

Brandon with Alana and the girls.

Shirley Paton went to her grandson’s 7th birthday at Oxbow on Friday. On Saturday, she went to Earle and Vicki Paton’s for a gath - ering of the family. On Easter Sunday, she went to Tilston Church which was 3/4 full as two children were being bap - tized.

Les and Carole McCune had Brian and Brenda Campbell in over Easter weekend.

Clara Jean Nash and Jean Moore enjoyed a turkey sup - per on Friday at Shirley and Ken Moore’s. Sunday, she had supper at Barbara and Gary Johnson’s at Antler.

Virginia Campbell and Rosina McLean enjoyed a turkey supper together for Easter.

Marion Mayert had Pat Taylor, Janice Caldwell and Julianne and Will Ludlam call in for a visit and tea on Tuesday after attending the funeral for Jean Zenchyshyn. Harold Mayert, Shirley Shore and Doris Lumgair of Morden and Dolores Echnes of Glenboro called in to see Auntie Marion.

Janice called in one morn - ing and took out the stitches for Marion after carpal tunnel surgery. The World Curling kept most of us at the TV this past week and now Marion will be watching baseball.

Get well wishes to those who have health problems. Hopefully, warm spring days will make them better. On Saturday, Marion was at Jan and Glenn Caldwell’s with their whole family to cele - brate Easter together.

Joan Baldwin returned home on Saturday, April 4, after being away for nearly four months. She spent 3 1/2 months in Chile, visiting her son Darren and family. Her son, Scott and family from Toronto visited Chile while Joan was there. On her way home, she visited Scott and family in Toronto and Mark and family in Winnipeg.

Visitors last Saturday with Joyce Hawkins were Dale and Kim Hawkins from Antler.

Joyce Hawkins was at Tilston on Sunday for the baptism of great-granddaugh - ter Andie Williamson and then to Cathy and Garnet Williamson’s for supper.

Marlene Balding spent a week with her mom, Florence Cowan, visiting in Reston before returning to their home in Airdrie, AB.

Shirley Jago and Terry Elliott of Seven Persons, AB, Sydney Jago and Colin

Frances of Medicine Hat, AB arrived late Thursday night to spend the weekend with Sid, Dorothy and other family members. Barb, Ryan and Corey Elliott were Friday night visitors with Sid and Dorothy.

Other Sunday visitors with Sid and Dorothy were Jim and Brenda Empey and family, Glenn and Leah Jago

and family all of Brandon, Karissa, Kade and Jaylen Butler of Minnedosa and Garth and Barb Elliott of Pipestone. We had an early 85th birthday celebration for Sid along with Easter.

Maxine Wray was at her son Bob and Dawn Wray’s at Tilston on Good Friday and then to Jack and Trudy Wray’s on Saturday and

Easter Sunday. Visitors with George and

Donna Jago recently were Clayton and Lori Jago from Regina enjoying a pre-Easter supper. They enjoyed Easter Sunday brunch with Dean and Janet in Brandon. They also enjoyed birthday cake on Sunday night with Sid and Dorothy’s family at the Alstone.

The Jotbook Lazy Creek Express

Reston United Church presents “Lazy Creek Express ” at the Reston Memorial Theatre on Sunday, April 19.

Thrift Sale Just a reminder that there will not be Spring

Thrift Sale at the St. John’s Anglican Church. Watch for fall dates.

A.A.A.D.D. Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. (Age

Activated Attention Deficit Disorder). This is how it manifests: I decided to wash my car. As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trashcan and notice it is full. So, I decided to take out the trash. But then I think, since I’m going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash, I may as well pay the bills. I take my chequebook off the table, and see that there’s only one cheque left. My extra cheques are in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the bottle of pop that I had been drinking. I’m going to look for my cheques but I see that the pop is getting warm and decide I should put it in the fridge. As I head toward the kitchen, a vase of flowers catches my eye, they need to be watered. I set the pop on the counter and I discover my glasses that I’ve been searching for. I decide I better put them back on my desk but first I’m going to water the flowers. I set my glasses back on the counter, fill a container with water and I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, so I decide to put it back in the den but first I’ll water the flowers. I spill water on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do. At the end of the day: the car isn’t washed, the bills aren’t paid, there is a warm pop sit - ting on counter, the flowers aren’t watered, there is still only one chequein my chequebook, I can’t find the remote, I can’t find my glasses and I don’t remember what I did with the car keys. I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I’m really baffled, I know I was busy all day long and I’m really tired.

Dear Allie, my favorite granddaughter: Last week I went up to our local Christian book

store, and saw a ‘ Honk if you love Jesus ’ bumper sticker. I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a uplifting choir per - formance. So, I bought the sticker and put it on my Buick. And Allie, I was so I glad I did; what an uplifting experience that followed. I was stopped at a red light on Park. It’s a very busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is, I didn’t notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed. I found that lots of people love Jesus! While I was sitting there, the guy in the pickup truck behind me started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, ‘For the love of God!’ ‘Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO! ’ What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus! Will write again soon. Love, Grandma

Reston Visitors with Elwyn and Marie on the weekend were Judy Henuset of Dauphin,

Laurie Voorman of Dauphin and Bert Pellitier of Flin Flon on their way home from Weslaco, Texas. All visited on Easter Saturday with Terry and Bev. Allison McConnell was home from Los Angeles for a week with Terry and Bev.

Seniors Helping Hands by Kathy Reid

Humour is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humour and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free and easy to use.

Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Humour lightens your burdens, inspires hopes, connects you to others and keeps you grounded, focused and alert.

Laughter is good for your health. • Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension

and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after. • Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and

increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resis - tance to disease.

• Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemi - cals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

• Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other car - diovascular problems.

There is a saying that laughter is the best medicine! Congregate Meals next week in Reston: Monday, April 13 - liver and onions;

Tuesday, April 14 - barbecue sausages; Wednesday, April 15 - beef stew and Friday, April 17 - roast chicken. In Pipestone on Thursday, April 16 - perogies and cabbage rolls. If you have any questions about these meals or if you want to book a spot at the table, please call Wilma in Reston at 204-877-3901 or Penny in Pipestone at 204- 854-2901.

Our activities at Seniors Helping Hands this week are: Monday, April 13 - Dominoes at 2:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 15 - art classes at 1:30 p.m.; Thursday, April 16 - exercises at 11:00 a.m. If you want to sign up for these activities or have any questions, please call our office at 204-877-3920.
