Earlier this year all of Australia heard about Dolly Everett, a 14yo girl from Katherine in the NT who tragically took her own life after relentless online bullying. Recently there has been an increased focus nationally on bullying and violence; in part because of the light Dolly’s situation shone on it. At JPSS we have taken a strong stand against violence and data shows a massive reduction in the number and severity of incidents. We also detest bullying; staff do make every effort to address concerns when they are raised. Recently Cara Fiebig (Middle School Assistant Principal) convened separate Year 8 and Year 9 assemblies regarding bullying and harassment. She delivered a compelling presentation; talked about the damage it causes, implored young people to interact positively with each other and initiated a SWAG (Student Wellbeing Action Group) intended to capitalise on student voice to assist staff in eliminating these behaviours. Not long ago school captains; Tash Chary and Chelsea Rose- Meyer met with student leaders from SMC and MNCC. Collectively they agreed to convene a CRAZY SOCK DAY on Tuesday 27 March in order to deliver a united message from Port Pirie’s young people who care about stopping bullying and violence. BULLYING IS NEVER OKAY! Everyone has a basic right to come to work, go to school, arrive home or attend community events and feel safe. HPE Camp

The Year 12s had their annual HPE camp from Monday 5 – Wednesday 7 March at Port Vincent. 26 eager teenagers, a mix of students between the HPE and Sport and Recreation classes, boarded the bus at 6.30am Monday morning and were greeted with an overcast day as the sun rose during the drive down. The Year 12 HPE class participated in Kayaking the whole time as one of their practicals for the course. Basic skills were the priority of the 2.5 days, accompanied by an extended trip around to the marina to look at the expensive houses and seals resting on the rocks. The Sport and Rec class participated in sailing, wind surfing, kayaking, knee boarding and snorkelling over the trip, giving them a taste of a range of aquatic activities in amongst the bay. The students were fantastic at camp, offering to cook and clean while Mr Hoile, Miss Fiebig and Mr Flavel put their feet up after some tough days taking photos, mixing cordial and cutting up morning tea. There were many highlights, including the DJ set on the Tuesday night from Fiebig and Flavel, the ‘champ of the camp’ shirt designed to get the students completing good deeds in camp and in the community, as well as the sunrise bus tour looking east over the bay of Port Vincent- a sight we don’t see here in Port Pirie. The weather improved the longer the camp went, as did the students attitudes, work ethic and respect for the local area- it was a great display from our senior students. A big thank you to the students who made the camp a great time and to the teachers mentioned above for organising and accompanying the trip. Chris Flavel

Fringe Performance “The Bard”

The senior students of English and Drama were given a real treat to be able to see a Fringe Festival performance of “The Bard” by Nicholas Collett. The play looked at the life of playwright, William Shakespeare from his birth through to his death. Along the way we were introduced to his “mother and father” (Kyah Dienhoff and Adam Stubbs) and his “wife” Ann Hathaway, played by Ms Vincent-Heylen who was delightfully “compared to a summers day”. The play captivated the audience who were highly engaged in Sharkepeare’s antics. At the conclusion senior drama students took part in a Question and Answer where Nicholas went through his writing process and gave them good advice on acting and stage craft, in particular to learn lines thoroughly, practise stillness and be the role. Good advice indeed! Karen Rohde – English Coordinator

Sports Day 2018

Before and after school teachers supervise the crossing on Mary Elie Street. Recently it has been noted that a number of students are being dropped outside of the gym and crossing the road there. Please remind students to walk up to the crossing and use this as the crossing point to enter the school.

Temporary Pass

1. If a student needs to leave the school for a special reason (eg. Doctor’s appointment, job interview, BUT NOT TO GO TO THE SHOPS – which includes Fast Food places), Parents/Carers must write a request note in the diary:- If there is no note, the student must be collected by the

parent, as verbal permission over the phone leaves no documentation to support permission given by the parent

If there is a note, but is says signing out for lunch, they will be denied by student services

If there is a note and it says parent will meet them, then when the student returns to sign in they will need a parent counter signature

If the note says that they will be collected, they must wait out front until they are picked up.

2. The pass request must be presented to the care group teacher for counter signing:- If the student doesn’t have a counter signature, they’ll

be asked to find their care group teacher 3. At the time of their departure student must report to student

services to be signed out 4. When returning to school the student must report to student

services to sign back in.
