FAILURE IS THE LINE OF LEAST PERSISTENCE ZigZiglar

One of our aims in 2015 and the next few years is to develop young people who are increasingly comfortable with challenge, youth who are resilient and can bounce back when faced with difficulty. The ability ‘stay with problems’ is vital for learning & success. The sweet spot for intellectual growth is the point at which “you don’t quite get it, it’s a bit too hard” and have to wrestle with a concept or new skill in order to fully grasp it. When you exercise the brain in this way it grows and you get smarter.

I am constantly inspired by the determination and never give up approach of some students and members of our community. Events like swimming carnival, Year 12 achievements, and presentation assemblies highlight the success that many enjoy as a result of their persistence. On the weekend I viewed a YouTube clip (check it out on our school Facebook) that featured Nick Vuijcic, an Australian guy born without arms & legs. Despite the obvious challenges Nick faces the courage he shows in confronting difficulties is extraordinary.

While we have many in our school community who show a similar tenacious spirit our goal is to grow the quality of persistence. As a staff I want us to balance the need for a supportive & safe school environment with one that stretches young people to achieve their best. Next Friday (20/02/15) teachers will spend all day working with experts in learning task design. They will be training and then supporting us to redesign current learning activities in a way that makes them more engaging and more rigorous or demanding on their thinking & problem solving abilities.

As parents & caregivers it would be great for you to talk with your children about stretch and challenge; to help them understand that success is a function of persistence; and to acknowledge whenever possible occasions when they demonstrate sustained effort on a challenging task.

New Teachers

INTRODUCING JOEL TURNBULL

I recently moved into Port Pirie from Adelaide, where I

completed my teaching degree at Adelaide University last year.

German and English are the subjects I teach. I have enjoyed

starting my teaching career in this town, as everybody is very

friendly and accepting.

In my spare time, I enjoy playing my Nintendo Wii U or reading,

particularly in the areas of philosophy and theology. I have also

recently started attending the local Baptist church here in Port

Pirie. I look forward to getting to know this town and its

community as the school year progresses.

Chaplain

Hello, my name is Marc Swensson and I am a student mentor at John Pirie Secondary School. I have a background in Youth Work and my role is to provide mentoring, pastoral support & classroom assistance. I look forward to helping your children have a productive and enjoyable 2015 at our school.

Mural

In 2014 Ms Morrison's year 9 Art classes learnt about the importance of reusing and recycling resources for environmental sustainability. Through this unit they created a bottle top mural. This is now on display outside of the art room.

Miss Morrison would like to thank her year 9 students from 2014 and any participating year 8 students for their efforts and contributions on a mammoth project. It was especially rewarding to experience a positive outcome when undertaking a project from conception to a final product. Ms Morrison hopes you all feel proud of your hard work and dedication each time you view the mural. A big thankyou also goes to Miss Keynes and Mr England for your support and crucial contributions.

John Pirie Secondary School Swimming Carnival 2015

On Friday February 6th

, John Pirie Secondary School held its

annual Swimming Carnival. The weather was forecast for 39°C,

staff arrived early to prepare the pool and pool staff had

provided a fantastic facility for the school to use.

New HPE Coordinator, Maciej Jankowski (Dr. J) welcomed

students to the event and encouraged participation and a fun

filled day. The event started with traditional swimming events

where students compete in 25m and 50m freestyle, backstroke

and breaststroke events. The day’s events saw Ross lead from

start to finish with not only some good individual efforts but

more importantly some fantastic team efforts in the Novelty

events and relays. The ever improving Lewis and Neilson were

hot on their heels but were unable to take the lead due to strong

efforts of Bonnie Jensen, Nathan McGregor and Cody Haby.

Ross managed to hold off the Lewis competitors in the U14

House Shield, narrowly winning by 2 points. Paige Jensen for

Ross and Maddy Heinrich for Lewis were very impressive

competitors in this age group. The captains for all House Teams

are to be commended on their efforts in bringing their teams

together on the day and assisting with ensuring their teams filled

events.

We had two records broken, first in U14 Girls, 25M Freestyle.

Chelsea Myer from Neilson broke a 6 year old record with a time

of 20:28. In the Open Girls, 4 x 25M Relay, Neilson broke a 4

year old record with a time of 1.34:24. Congratulations!

There were some exceptional individual events on the day. Ethan

Nitz dominated in the under 14 boys age group, recording the

highest individual total score of the day with 72. The staff relay

was also a highly anticipated race with the Hewett team of

Robbel, Lim, Nottage and Greenhalgh narrowly falling to the

Lewis team of Black, Zani, Pendry and Wright who powered their

way to victory. The Hewett staff team have been dethroned after

many years of domination. MC Aaron Ward and DJ Marc

Swensson provided some fantastic commentary and

entertainment throughout the day, using team top songs to aid

their performance.

Principal Roger Nottage awarded Kobain King from Neilson and

Amy Baker also from Neilson the ‘Most Outstanding Effort

Awards’. Kobain kept filling in events all day, some of which

weren’t even his age group and Amy showed excellent

leadership, participation and team spirit.

Finally a big thank you needs to go to the Port Pirie Swimming

Pool and Port Pirie Swimming Club for the use of their facilities

and resources, the parents and families who supported the event

and lastly but by no means least to all the staff and students who

made the day so successful. We can now look forward to Sports

day to be held at Memorial Oval in either week 8 or 9 of 2015.
