Lord, hold our troops in Your loving hands, protect them as they protect us. We ask this in the name of Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.
OCTOBER 2Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4; Psalm 95; 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14;Luke 17:5-10How often do we feel, like the apostles in today’s Gospel, that our faith is simply inadequate? Yet Jesus’ answer is that even faith the size of a mustard seed can do great things. So often we feel helpless in the presence of the great problems of our day. But as we hear these readings, perhaps it will be best for us to listen for the message that says, “Do what you can. It will be enough.”

OCTOBER 2, 2016 – TWENTY-SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEWe live in times when we see the first reading’s lament about misery, violence, and destruction in the newspaper every day. How can we get through it all? Faith has to be the answer for us. We all know people who say that it was their faith that carried them in their darkest hour. Perhaps our prayer today can be that it will be the same for us.

• prayer for hurrIcane season •– FR. AL VOLPE, CAMERON PARISH, LA
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of Your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude; You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen.

Teamwork is a foremost emphasis of our days at Saint Benedict Catholic School. It is occurring with our staff, our parents and in our classrooms. Staff members have been working together in supporting the needs of our children. With additional teachers helping students in every grade to acquire academic skills, we expect to see a greater number gaining mastery. Parents are joining in PTO and committees to produce super fundraiser events such as the 5th Annual Draw Down which will be occurring on October 28th, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. (Buy your tickets now!!) In the classroom, second graders are using writing centers to write sentences and stories together. Fifth graders are helping each other in memorizing facts, and to tell intervals of time in math class, while middle schoolers are working together to learn drama skills, to produce stories in language arts, and to create geology projects depicting plate movement in science. Working together makes it easier to produce skilled learners, spread the work of producing fund raisers, and have fun in the classroom!

JUBILEE DOOR OF MERCY The initial rite of the Jubilee is the opening of the Holy Door. This door is one which is opened during the Holy Year at The Major Basilicas of Rome. For those not able to make a Holy Year pilgrimage to Rome, each Diocesan Bishop is able to designate churches in his diocese that are Holy Year Pilgrimage Churches. These churches will contain a designated door as the Jubilee Door of Mercy. Archbishop Rodi has designated Our Lady of the Gulf such a church. The rite of opening the Holy Door illustrates symbolically the idea that during the Jubilee, the faithful are offered an “extraordinary pathway” to salvation. The opportunity for people to pass through a Jubilee Door of Mercy offers them the extraordinary opportunity, out of the ordinary, to gain the Jubilee Year indulgence, but also the opportunity to live the Jubilee as a pathway of conversion.
JUBILEE INDULGENCEThe Jubilee Indulgence is received by having passed through the Door of Mercy, and fulfilling conditions for obtaining the Jubilee Indulgence.•Celebrate the Sacrament of Penance with the intention of shunning a sinful way of life;•Participate at Mass & Receive Holy Communion within a reasonable period after making one’s Confession;•Pass through the Jubilee Door of Mercy;•Pray the Creed, and a prayer for the Intentions of the Holy Father;o UNIVERSAL: JOURNALISTS: That journalists, in carrying out their work, may always be motivated by respect for truth and a strong sense of
ethics.o EVANGELIZATION: WORLD MISSION DAY: That World Mission Day may renew within all Christian communities the joy of the Gospel and the
responsibility to announce it.o And for this Jubilee Year of Mercy perform a Corporal Work of Mercy.
•It is recommended, but not required, the recitation of the Jubilee Year written by Pope Francis.“Through indulgences the faithful can obtain the remission of temporal punishment resulting from sin, for themselves, and also for the souls in purgatory.“
(CCC, no. 1498)
JUBILEE YEAR PRAYERLord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees You sees Him. Show us Your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Lord, let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that You spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of God who manifests His power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be Your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that Your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send Your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee Year of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and Your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen (Pope Francis)
THE CORPORAL WORKS OF MERCY• Feed the hungry • Give drink to the thirsty • Shelter the homeless • Clothe the naked • Visit the sick
• Visit the prisoners • Bury the dead • Give alms to the poor.
ACT OF CONTRITION0 my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You. And I detest all my sins because of Your just punishments, but most of all because I have offended You my God who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Your grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.
