Hello Southport Springs, it is already starting to get hot out. This past week many of you
are telling us, you are heading home. Please have a safe journey home and enjoy your
summer. We will see you in the fall or early winter. We will be down here melting. I was
going to do a full all lot inspection this month but have decided instead to try something
different. If you look at your home and the weeds are high and the home is green and
your flower beds are over grown, then this message is for you. Please take care of the
issues before May 31st. That is the deadline. I will be out inspecting the community and
I will be issuing violation notices. At that point you will have a week to take care of the
issue. Please spread the word. This is one of those good Gossip topics I talk about all the
time. This rumor you can spread. The whole purpose behind this is to keep our
community looking fantastic. I know this is the way we all feel. Remember I am trying to
get our community the best in the entire portfolio of Sun Communities. This will help
for sure. This summer we are going to ramp it up and do the small details that will make
us pop when you drive down the Boulevard.
I would also like to bring up a sore subject and that is the fence by the pool that was
damaged this past weekend. I know that this was done by a child with an adult and the
child was driving. I am pretty sure I know who it is. But the biggest reason I bring this
up is to ask for all of your help. Myself and Sun can provide this community everything
we feel our residents deserve. However without your help to keep it looking good, we
will start looking ABUSED IN A SHORT WHILE. Please help me and my team we
cannot do it alone. I am finding cigarette butts on the new pavers, broken fence, papers
all over the parking lot and all over the pool area. This is not ok guys, and we need to
work together and pick up after ourselves. This community and your neighbors deserve
it. The price of the fence is not the point; it is the action that was taken and the lack of
respect for your own community that is bothering me. So please let’s move forward and
try please to love your community and treat it with respect.
Thank you and everyone have a great day.
Southport Silver Needles: would like to thank everyone who bought tickets on our "50
Shades of Blue" quilt. Also they would like to thank all those who attended the Quilt
Show on March 5th. Thanks to your generosity they were able to donate $2,000 to the
local charities! The monies went to East Pasco Meals on Wheels, Zephyrhills Volunteer
Fire/Rescue and the ABC foundation at Chester W. Taylor Elementary School. All three
charities were very grateful to receive these funds to continue the good work that they
do. They are also very grateful to the Lighthouse Crafters for their donation of $100 so
that they can continue making quilts to benefit local charities. Thank you Southport
Springs! What a wonderful community to call home.
Ted and Margie Maska: would like to thank the Sunshine Committee for the basket of
goodies and well wishes during Ted's recent hospitalization. They also want to express
our gratitude to Roger Bernard, Sharon Wilson, Mel Townsend, Bill and Viv Finneran for
their support and assistance. Ted is recovering well. Thank You.
The Fireworks Group: would like to say a special thank you to the Southport Springs
HOA for their generous donation to help fund the 4th of July fireworks. With your help it
should be an awesome display this year.
Dianna & Tom Coy: would like to thank the Sunshine Committee for the flowers and
fruit basket. Tom & Dianna appreciate the thought. They love everyone here at
Southport Springs, it is a great place to live.

Children on Golf Carts Why Would You Do this?
By Joe Grigelevich
I was on my way to the pool a few days ago and I saw a couple of young kids riding
a golf cart. They were laughing and having a total blast. The one that was driving
was making a point of taking each corner kind of sharp while the other guy held on
to the side bar and hung out over the road. Seemed like only yesterday when I was
doing the same sort of thing. You know...the Evil Kenevil thing when you think and
feel that your infallible and that nothing will go wrong. I’m a bit older now and a
whole lot more wiser (hopefully). Please let me preface all of this by letting you
know how much I enjoy and love kids. Just being around them watching them in
action and hearing them laugh gives me joy and makes me feel young ( or at least
younger than I am). I was in the pool a couple of weeks ago with four awesome kids
(Ben, Eddie, Dan and Angela). We talked for the longest time and they made me
laugh constantly. When one of them dove in the pool I pointed to the sign about
not jumping or diving and I explained that the last thing we wanted to have happen
is for a young person to get hurt or an old person to have a heart attack. Then of
course we had this whole discussion about heart attacks. They totally accepted my
warning and explanation and apologized and we continued talking about where
they went to school, what sports they played, what instruments they played and on
and on. Talking to young folks is so invigorating. If you want a good dose of
honesty; take a moment to talk to a kid. They do tell it like it is.
So here’s the point. Why in the world would anyone (parent or grandparent) allow
a kid to put themselves in danger? The last thing any of us need is to look at a little
white cross at some intersection here in Southport reminding us of the place where
a youngster loss their life falling from a golf cart or being crushed by one that fell
over on him or her. Try it sometime. Stand next to you golf cart and try tipping it
over by pulling it towards you. It doesn’t take much. Then try imagining your
grandchild pinned under it. Then ask yourself why you would have allowed
someone you loved so much to put themselves in that kind of danger. You know, it
seems every time there’s a school vacation, we find ourselves listening to folks like
Terri and Lisa warning us not to let the kids drive our golf carts; and yet we
invariably see it happen every single time there’s a school vacation. And the
question is “WHY?” Why would anyone put their child or grandchild in that kind of
danger when there are so many things they could do to have fun? I’m not for one
minute suggesting that anyone who lives here would ever intentionally put their
grandchild in danger. Without exception, we all love our grandchildren to the nth
degree (after all, they’re God’s thank you gift to each of us for putting up with our
kids). However, what I am saying is that some folks may not be thinking of what
the downside might be. Oh…I know. They look up at you with those great big eyes
and then they hug you and tell you how much they love you and then BANG! Your
down for the count. But I’m telling ya...it ain’t worth it. You really do need to take
the time to explain to them how dangerous it could be and why you can’t let them
drive. And if all else fails, blame the office. Terri has big shoulders and I’m sure she
doesn’t mind being the fall guy on this one.
So think about it folks. The next time little Bobby or Janet comes over and sits on
your lap and tells you they have a big favor to ask. Get ready. There’s a good chance
they’re going to ask you if they could drive your golf cart; and you need to be ready
to say, “Gee...I wish I could let you; but I can’t. I really can’t. I love you too much to
take a chance that you might get seriously hurt. How about we go for a swim or
how about you be my caddy today or how about we play some tennis or horse shoes
or shuffle board? And if Bobby or Janet asks you why?
Just say “ it’s because I love you”.
“What a bargain grandchildren are! I give them my loose change, and they give me
a million dollars’ worth of pleasure. “ ~Gene Perret

Memorial Day Ceremony
Memorial Day is almost upon us. It is a day to honor the brave men and
women who have lost their lives in the service of this great nation of ours.
Where would we be without their sacrifices? Let's raise our flags in respect
and gratitude to all of our military, both living and deceased, both active
duty and retired. A sincere and heartfelt thank you from all of us at
Southport Springs.
Once a year, at this time we come together as a community to remember
all those residents who have passed away.
We call it a service of remembrance.
This year the service will be at 9 am on Monday, May 30th, in the
clubhouse ballroom.
Please come and show your support for our friends and neighbors as we
remember those who are no longer with us.
Once again, we will display the pictures of the deceased. It helps people to
remember and to put faces with names.
Please call Patti Rich at 780-1982 if you have any questions or if you
would like me to pick up any pictures for display. We would like the
list to be as accurate as possible, so please call if you are aware of
the death of any former resident. Thank You.

Bereavement Committee
This committee works as a volunteer group totally separate from management and our
HOA. The sole purpose of this committee is to provide a luncheon for the family and
friends of a deceased resident of Southport Springs. We provide this service only at the
request of the family for the number of guests the family suggests.
It has been our policy that the meat trays and sandwich buns be paid for by the family.
We gather the remaining food from within the community. In addition, the committee
provides dinner and dessert plates, salad bowls, cups, plastic utensils, and napkins. A
cold drink and coffee, cream and sugar are also provided.
In order to meet our expenses, there is a fee of $25.00 for each 50 guests from the
family.
It is our pleasure to provide this service to the community and hope to continue to do so.
For the committee to give our services back to the community, we would appreciate that
we are involved with all the plans from beginning to end so there is no
miscommunication. This helps us to know who to contact. We try to contact different
people each time, but sometimes that is impossible. Thank you to the generous cooks in
Southport Springs who make this possible to do for the community.

Our first Special Event Dinner featured a ribeye steak dinner. We had no idea what to
expect for this event. Your response was almost overwhelming. We were compelled to
put a limit on the amount of participants we could accommodate. After all is said and
done, we are grateful that this event proved to be extremely successful.
We thank you for your support.
Because of your support we anticipate continuing these special event dinners.
We speculate there will be challenges with social events due to the clubhouse
refurbishing project taking place this summer. In spite of these challenges, your HOA
Board is committed to continuing social activities to include pool parties, cookouts,
karaoke, possible pool-side dances and bingo.
Our Social and Entertainment Committees will continue to brainstorm options and
organizing social events throughout the summer months.
It has been 13 months since Sun Communities took over ownership of Southport
Springs. As we reflect on the condition of our park then compared to now, we can’t help
but be grateful for Sun Communities commitment to our park and to our residents. So
many improvements have occurred during this time period and there are many more to
come. If you agree, take a moment to thank our park manager, Terri Passaro, for her
efforts and Sun Communities commitment to improving our park.
Our HOA meeting for the month of May will be on the 3rd Tuesday. The date for
the meeting is May 17. The starting time remains at 7:00 p.m.
We wish you all a safe and blessed summer.
Regards,
Barbara Holdridge, HOA President
Caddy Shack This and That
Monthly Best Caddie Remark
Golfer: "I'd move heaven and earth to break 100 on this course."
Caddy: " Try Heaven, you've already moved most of earth.'
The entire golf course will be closed on May 10th for aeration.
The Pro Shop is finally open. Patio has been laid with paver stones. Tables and chairs should
be set up soon. This will be a nice area for golfers to enjoy chatting about their round while
enjoying their drinks.
If summer leagues have not signed new contracts for summer hours, please see the Pro Shop
to make these changes.
If you are not a golfer, you are not allowed to be on the course at any time. There will be no
bikes, walkers, joggers, pets, or sightseers in carts allowed at anytime.
Please abide by these rules.
Brandon Grooms will copy a calendar to me monthly of the schedule for chemicals applied to
the course. Check the bulletin board in the Pro Shop for these dates.
Again, I cannot express the importance of the 90* rule. I still see many golfers not adhering to
this rule. Please respect your course and rules. I see violations everyday.
All par 3's are CART PATH ONLY. I know I keep repeating, but there are still violators.
HANDICAP carts no closer than 15' and never on the greens. PLEASE abide by these rules.
Please fix all divots on Tee, in fairways, and on greens.
Do not go inside cart sign boundaries or within 30' of the greens.
Another reminder that all Members and non- Members MUST have a tee time.
Make tee times early and pay in advance if after 2 pm. All non-member residents golfers with
own carts expected to be on the course after 2 pm will be given a bright pink card to hang on
their carts with date and receipt attached to back indicating they have paid.
Work continues on our course. If you have any suggestions to improve our course and leagues,
please submit to the Pro Shop.
Thanks and remember to have FUN!! Happy Golfing
Dave Stemen- Pro Shop Manager.
