Welcome!

Have you ever stopped to think what it would take to be a super Christian? Certainly, the absence

of self promotion would be a good start! The Bible says regarding the Bereans, “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that

they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). The word “noble” in this scripture is used in a figurative sense meaning, “characterized by high moral qualities, of superior quality or kind.”

The author of this passage is explicit that receiving God’s Word with all readiness of mind, and searching the scriptures daily for validation is a recipe for excellence. The proof is in the pudding. The following verse goes on to say, “Therefore many of them believed…” (Acts 17:12). A hunger for God’s Word, and time spent with God’s Word, promotes belief in God’s Word!

Question #1 is worth ten points. Question. If there was a program available to young people that encouraged Acts 17:11 with added emphasis on Acts 17:12 in a fun and competitive way, would you be involved? Of course you would!

Bible Quizzing is that and a whole lot more. Bible Quizzing is a great way to immerse young people in personal study of God’s Word. They memorize extensive passages of Scripture and learn valuable lessons about Godly character and values. Regular study sessions teach the quizzers about discipline, persistence and teamwork. Monthly tournaments provide opportunity for quizzers to exhibit their knowledge of the quizzing material, to compete against other teams in a fun, safe and Godly environment, and to fellowship with other quizzers near their own age.

Inside this quizzing resource packet you will find an extensive amount of information regarding Bible quizzing. From reasons to quiz, reasons to have a quiz team, what is Bible quizzing and other frequently asked questions, to information about the upcoming quiz year, tournament locations and dates, registration forms, where to purchase questions, an order form to get started, and a plethora of resources compiled from various quiz coordinators, quiz coaches, and former quizzers on how to have a successful quiz team.

My goal is to encourage, promote, inspire, and equip you with all of the information necessary to ensure a great quiz program at your church. Why? Not for trophies, fellowship, or competition, although those things have their place. But as a former quizzer myself, I understand how life impacting Bible quizzing can be!

Quizzing makes a difference, Sammy Godair Oklahoma SBQ Coordinator

Why your child should Bible Quiz

Research shows that Bible Quizzers are more likely to stay in church. Sadly, recent independent studies have concluded that approximately 80% of Apostolic teenagers end up leaving the church before they make it through adolescence. With ever-increasing distractions influencing them through media and culture, this number is increasing. That means the average youth group has only a 20% retention rate! In light of these overwhelming statistics the general youth division has concluded that those involved in Bible Quizzing have the exact opposite result. Of children and teenagers who have been involved in quizzing for three or more consecutive years, approximately 8 out of 10 stay in the church not only through adolescence, but the rest of their lives! The longer they are in quizzing, the higher the chance they’ll stay plugged in. Here are a few other reasons why your children should be involved in Bible Quizzing.

¾ Greater understanding of the scripture. A consistent relationship with God’s Word will give them confidence in their faith and encourage them to live out God’s will and purpose for their lives.

¾ Greater involvement in church activities.

Through quizzing, your children will meet hundreds of other teens who also have a passion for the things of God. Increasing your students’ involvement in Senior Bible Quizzing will give them a positive social outlet, thus reducing the time they would have for distractions elsewhere.

¾ Improved study habits.

Quizzing will actually increase retention and improve study habits by utilizing short term memorization techniques. Bible quizzers often express that through Bible Quizzing, they learn how to adequately study for tests at school.

¾ Teaches personal responsibility.

Bible quizzing causes young people to learn the process of goal setting and consistent time management skills. Completing an entire year of quizzing requires a certain amount of dedication and self-motivation that can only be gained through personal life experience.

¾ Competitive outlet.

Many quizzers will learn how to handle feelings of disappointment and frustration as well as great excitement, while maintaining a positive attitude toward their peers and coaches.

¾ Strengthen their walk with God.

Through daily study of scripture and emphasis on prayer as well as several youth services throughout the course of a quiz season, young people will truly grow in their personal lives and ministries. Several young people involved in Bible Quizzing received the initial infilling of the Holy Ghost through Bible quizzing functions.

“…Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

- Romans 12:2

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” - Psalm 119:11

Why YOU should Bible Quiz

¾ Social reasons. o Through quizzing, you will meet hundreds of new people from across the country. Some of these

relationships will develop into life-long friendships. o You’ll meet other students that have a passion for God like yourself. At camps and meetings, you see

everyone, but in quizzing, you’ll meet friends who have dedicated their lives to God.

¾ Competition. o Many young people don’t have the benefits of competition. It’s fun to get competitive at something.

It doesn’t take away from the Word of God, but adds an exciting twist.

¾ Traveling. o Through the year, you’ll get to travel throughout your state and even to other states for

extravaganzas and invitational competitions. o The North American Bible Quiz Tournament (NABQT) is held in various places throughout the

United States and has even been to Canada o You will grow confident in your faith and be able to use your knowledge in discussions. Young

people who not only know what they believe but why are more effective witnesses.

¾ Cool awards. o This goes along with competition. It’s exciting to bring home trophies to show to the church saying

you are one of the top quizzers or teams in the state. There are trophies given out to quizzers and team trophies.

¾ A closer walk with God.

o David said, “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” (Psalm 119:11) o Jeremiah said, “…His word was in mine heart as a burning fire, shut up in my bones…”

(Jeremiah 20:9) o Job said, “I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.” (Job 23:12) o In Hosea, the Lord explained, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” (Hosea 4:6)

¾ Witnessing opportunities.

o At school, if you have your verse cards, people will ask you about them. Friends at school will want you to quote to them. Friends will start coming to you for advice on situations in their life, because they know that you know the Bible.

¾ Better study habits.

o Through quizzing, you can learn how to study for tests and quizzes in school at a very fast pace. It may have taken you awhile to study before, but the more you exercise your brain through quizzing, the faster you can learn new things.

¾ Because it’s fun!

o Friends, traveling, competition, awards, food, and the Word of God…what else could you ask for?!?!

The Fringe Benefits of Bible Quizzing…

Roger D. Creel Former Louisiana SBQ Coordinator

Anyone in serious pursuit of a permanent occupation not only considers the hourly rate or annual

salary, but also factors into their “decision formula” the fringe benefits associated with the employment. Quiet often, it is not the salary that makes the difference between employment opportunities as much as it is the fringe benefits. Health insurance, life insurance, vacation days, investment options, and company charge cards, vehicles, and phones are just a few of the many fringe benefits that individuals enjoy just because they chose the right employer! Young people involved in Bible quizzing likewise can avail themselves of benefits far and above the thrust of this life-changing ministry. While hiding God’s Word in their hearts, our youth involved in the Bible quiz ministry are also reaping benefits both spiritually and physically. The Psalmist wrote, “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation.” Even as the Lord looked down on the pure heart of a young lady named Ruth and provided her with “handfuls on purpose” (Ruth 2:16), He looks today on the hearts of young people desiring to learn more of Him through His Word and drops into their lives benefits on a daily basis. And what are some of these fringe benefits? Listed below, in no particular order, are eight of the top fringe benefits of the Bible quizzing ministry. Friendships … Over the years, I’ve reaped this benefit myself, over and over again. I have developed friendships that will last a lifetime. It is a joy to watch as young people with the same spiritual priorities develop bonds that will provide friendship and support through the good times and the bad. I’ve also seen friendships developed between quizzers that have led to “till death do us part”! Time Management … In today’s society, if there is one thing every young person needs to learn, it is time management. “Too busy for God’s Word today, then you’re too busy I would say!” These words of my childhood Sunday School teacher still echo loud and clear. Through Bible quizzing, our youth learn how to manage a teenage life style, but still provide time for prayer and study. It all comes down to making wise decisions. Effective Study Habits … Those who don’t understand Bible quizzing and its benefits may question whether being involved will hinder their academic progress in school. In over twenty years of working with Bible quizzers, it has been my observation that their involvement in Bible quizzing has only helped them to develop study habits that result in even higher grades! Consistency … A virtue that is a rare commodity in today’s society is consistency. So many young people have convinced themselves that life, both spiritually and physically, has to be a “roller coaster”. The

8

fact is that we can overcome this trick of Satan by establishing our lives on the forever stable, never changing Word of God.

Teamwork … “A threefold cord is not quickly broken.” The big “I” and little “you” philosophy is common in the workplace today, but has no place in the church. A successful Bible quiz ministry will revolve around a team and not an individual. Every person has their place on the team, just as every member has a place in the body of Christ. Perseverance … “He that endureth to the end shall be saved.” It is neither the swift, nor the strong who necessarily cross the finish line first. How many priceless inventions were laid on the shelf and never completed? How many good intentions are drifting hopelessly, wishing they would be carried out? The winners in Bible quizzing are those who “stick with it” to the end. Handling Emotions … Life is filled with emotions. From disappointment to exuberance; from victory to defeat, it is important for every young person to learn how to deal with these emotions as they come. Decisions that affect our lives are not always enjoyable, but through the experience, we must use them to grow stronger in Christ. Some of the greatest examples of being humble during victory and gracious during defeat have been displayed in the Bible quiz ministry. Personality Development … Year after year, I have watched as Bible quizzing has drawn young people out of their “shells”. Those who couldn’t look you in the eye as they spoke suddenly were testifying, teaching, and even preaching! They learned to enjoy fellowshipping with others, even to the point that it was sometimes detrimental to their quizzing! What a reward it is for those who work with the Bible quiz ministry to hear the last year quizzers as they testify of what God’s Word has done in their lives and remember when they were backward, shy rookies just a few short years ago. So along with the Psalmist, I ask each quizzer and coach, “What shall I render unto the LORD for all his benefits toward me?” Tell others about the love of Jesus and what this life-changing ministry can do for young people today!

The Goal of Quizzing…To Have Your Name in the Book!

Clay Strawn Texas SBQ Coordinator

All quizzers, most coaches, and some parents have perused the pages at the back of the quiz manual. These pages scan three decades naming individuals and listing churches that have received trophies at national tournaments. One quizzer may experience a sense of accomplishment as he views his name on these coveted pages, while another merely dreams of someday being listed with this elite group. Upon turning to the back of the manual, one discovers the names of quizzers from all over North America; but there is a plethora of quizzers, past and present, who will never be named in this book. Yes, quizzers and coaches are elated when they achieve success at national tournaments, thus being named in the manual; but the recording of names in the quiz manual pales in significance when compared to being named in God’s book. Jesus said to rejoice because your names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. All quiz teams are comprised of quizzers with varying talents and abilities. Some are able to memorize with ease. Others may not memorize so easily, but they hold the team together with prayer and a spirit of encouragement. Though they do not answer questions in every game, some quizzers provide the leadership skills that bring the team to a new dimension in the Holy Ghost. The audience, the officials, and the entire quizzing community always notice the high scoring quizzer on the team. Observers and members of other teams readily recognize the name of this high scorer while the other quizzers on the team are seemingly unnoticed even by peers. To the onlookers, these quizzers are unnamed, but the Lord has recorded their names for eternity. Many times in Scripture, people whose names do not grace the pages of our Bibles accomplished great feats. Some called her a harlot. Others did not refer to her at all. But this woman’s testimony brought many to a belief in Jesus as the Christ. The name of the woman of Samaria is unknown to us, but her life leaves a lasting impression even today. The given name of the Hebrew captive maid is unknown to the Bible scholar, but her presence made a profound difference in Namaan’s life. A man doomed to die as a leper was cleansed because of an unnamed person. The power of God was manifested because of someone whose name is not written in the book. The scripture simply records that “a woman” dropped a millstone on Abimelech’s head causing his death. Her name is not recorded in the annals of history, but she made a difference to God’s people. The name of the mother of Samson is not important, but her obedience and sensitivity to the voice of the Lord is important. The omission of her name does not make her visitation by an angel any less real. No, we do not know her name, but the Lord noticed her.

An unnamed couple built a guesthouse for the prophet Elisha. Their names are not important and are not recorded in Scripture; but the Lord applauded their deeds. Because of their unselfishness, the Lord granted them the keenest desire of their hearts. Aren’t our lives full of people whose names will never be recorded in local newspapers or national magazines? The unnamed heroes in our lives built the character in us that causes us to keep walking for the Lord. Our churches are filled with saints who have never delivered a sermon or sung a special song; however, these people have made a profound impact on the lives of those around them. Because of their fervent prayers and sacrificial lifestyles revival has erupted time and time again. The quizzer at buzzer #3 may never have his name mentioned as a high scorer. The substitute may never have an opportunity to press the buzzer button or feel the excitement of correctly answering a question. Why, then, should the substitute keep studying God’s Word? Why should he dedicate his entire summer to the quiz ministry? Why should he sacrifice free time? Why should he feel such joy? The answer is simple—his name is written in “the book.” Most quizzers will never have their names on display in the back of the manual, but it is paramount to understand that the accolades of men matter little when the King of Kings is applauding all those who devote their time and talents to the quiz ministry. So, unnamed quizzer, quiz with all your might because your name is written in a book that will last throughout eternity.

End of the Year Awards Coach of the year

The purpose of this ballot is to reward the coach with the most outstanding effort for the entire quiz season. A COTY award will be handed out to one coach in each division. This is probably one of the most difficult awards to hand out, because so much of the work is done behind the scenes, and not in public view. Certainly every coach in their own regard is worthy and deserving of the coach of the year. Below are some of the qualities that we look for in the COTY:

x Realizes that winning isn’t everything, and isn’t the only thing. Though trophies are a goal we actively seek, a good coach instills loftier, more important ambitions.

x Has a genuine concern for each of their quizzers. They will not belittle them, especially in front of other people, even if they do get frustrated.

x Has been consistent throughout the entire year. A consistent coach often results in a consistent team, demonstrated at quizzes.

x Displays a good attitude behind the quiz board. The COTY does not demonstrate a bad attitude during the quiz, or whether then win or lose.

x Displays a good attitude when they are away from the quiz board. The COTY does not complain to other people about officiating, other teams, coaches, or quizzers.

x Attended each of the tournaments, and made a concerted effort to attend the extravaganza.

x Kept quizzers under control at the tournaments. x Is a role model to other coaches and quizzers.

Quizzer of the Year The purpose of this ballot is to reward the quizzer with the most outstanding effort for the entire

quiz season. A QOTY award will be handed out to one quizzer in each division. The QOTY is the highest award that a quizzer can achieve. Doing well at the quiz board is very important as it is a litmus test for the amount of time that has been consistently spent throughout the quiz year. However, several factors must be considered when choosing the QOTY:

x Has been consistent throughout the entire year. x Displays a good attitude at the quiz board. The QOTY does not demonstrate a bad attitude

whether then win or lose. x Displays a good attitude when they are away from the quiz board. The QOTY does not

complain to other people about officiating, other teams, coaches, or quizzers. x Does not create a distraction for other teams that are quizzing. x Is a role model to other quizzers. x Knows the verses. x Consistently quizzed well at each of the tournaments. The result often is placing on the All

Tournament Team individually, and helping the team place corporately.

21

Q U I Z Z I N G R E S O U R C E P A C K E T

x It is often said about a QOTY, “That I wish I had a team of quizzers just like them!” This is not to demean individuality, as we celebrate our differences. Rather the QOTY emulates a personality, drive, attitude, dedication, and spirit that are to be copied.

Rookie of the Year The purpose of this ballot is to reward the rookie quizzer with the most outstanding effort for the

entire quiz season. One award will be handed out to either division, but usually from the intermediate. All rookie quizzers as defined in the quizzer’s manual will be eligible for this award. A lot of times rookies consist of Junior Bible Quizzers who have graduated to Senior Bible Quizzing. With 50% more material and different rules, this can be a tough transition. Sometimes there are rookies that have never had any experience in Bible Quizzing at all. They are all to be commended for finishing what they started. The ROTY will be awarded to the rookie who has demonstrated the following:

x A rookie will be defined as anyone who has never quizzed in Senior Bible Quizzing before, or who has never quizzed beyond an extravaganza as defined in the BQ manual.

x Can be awarded to any rookie in the intermediate or the experienced division. x Because the QOTY is the highest honor bestowed to any quizzer; a quizzer cannot be

awarded both the QOTY and ROTY. If a rookie happens to be voted the QOTY and ROTY, by default the ROTY will be awarded to the rookie with the next most amount of votes.

x Has been consistent throughout the entire year. x Displays a good attitude at the quiz board. The ROTY does not demonstrate a bad attitude

whether then win or lose. x Displays a good attitude when they are away from the quiz board. The ROTY does not

complain to other people about officiating, other teams, coaches, or quizzers. x Does not create a distraction for other teams that are quizzing. x Is a role model to other quizzers. x Knows the verses. x Consistently quizzed well at each of the tournaments. The result often is placing on the All

Tournament Team individually, and helping the team place corporately.

Typical Quiz Year Sequence

The sequence for a typical Bible Quiz year:

1. Mid-August a. The actual listing of which verses to be studied become available. b. Materials (study guides, verse cards, etc.) will be released and become available for order by

phone or from Gary Power’s website: www.bqpowers.com. Quizzers may begin learning their verses at this point and Quiz teams may begin practice whenever they wish. Keep in mind that there is still about four and a half months before quiz competition actually begins.

2. January a. Quiz competition actually begins. This is generally when tournaments begin, but depends upon

your district, as there is no requirement for districts to conduct a certain number of tournaments. Many districts hold monthly tournaments.

3. Late March-April a. Regional Bible Quiz Extravaganzas (BQEs) are held in four locations (regions) around the

country. b. Generally a team should plan to attend the BQE closest to them, although a team is not required

to attend a particular or any BQE. Some churches use this as a retreat time and travel to a further BQE.

4. June a. District Finals. These tournaments determine who will qualify to attend the North American

Bible Quiz Tournament (the NABQT or National Finals). 5. Early August

a. The North American Bible Quiz Tournament (NABQT) takes place. b. The following year’s materials become available.

2016 information:

1. Theme – “Unashamed” 2. Verses:

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Bible Quizzing? Bible Quizzing is a fantastic ministry to get the Word of God into young people’s hearts. Not only is it one of the best things that a young person can do spiritually, but Bible quizzing can also be exciting, fun, competitive and enjoyable. There are very few other areas in which young people are able to socialize with so many other godly youth on a regular basis. Bible Quizzing requires great discipline and responsibility of an individual so the true metal of its participants is tested as well as their ability to cooperate as a team. A senior quizzer must learn over 500 verses from a selected book or books of the Bible and to compete well must be able to answer any question asked out of those verses. These questions can range from 1 part to 10 parts, can be cross-reference (from multiple verses or chapters or books) or quotation in which a quizzer must quote a verse or verses word for word. As you can imagine, a quizzer must devote much time to be competitive, in fact when qualifying teams are approaching the National Bible Quiz Tournament at the end of the year it is not unknown for quizzers to study up to 6 and 8 hours per day. To the casual observer, Bible quizzing is a sport in which two teams match knowledge, speed, memory, and quickness of response against one another on a designated portion of Scripture. Quizzing, however, offers much more than just competition and sport. The program involves memorizing a specific book or books of the Bible for each quiz year. By becoming involved in memorization, young people develop a love and respect for the Bible. The Word is planted in their hearts and dynamically influences them. Is there an age limit? There are two divisions of Bible Quizzing: The Junior division (Ages 6-11) and the Senior division (Ages 12-18). Inside the Senior division there is an Intermediate division of quizzing for 12 to 14 year olds and first year quizzers and an Experienced division for those who are 15 through 18 years old. The quizzer’s division is determined by the age they are on December 31st of the year prior to the quiz year (i.e. a student will be Experienced if their 15th birthday is December 31st.) How long is the quiz season? The actual Bible Quizzing Tournaments start in January and are held monthly until the states final tournament in June. If a team places at their state tournament, they qualify for nationals held the first weekend in August. The quizzers actually start studying in November or the beginning of December. How do you start a quizzing program? First ask your Pastor if he would be ok with your church starting such a ministry. When you have your Pastor’s ok, contact your state coordinator for more information on the subject. Your state youth committee should have information on how to contact the state Bible Quizzing coordinator. Get any information or ideas for promoting Bible Quizzing from the state coordinator before approaching kids. The coordinator can give you tips on how to successfully promote the program at your church. When you’ve reached been approved by the Pastor and asked any pertinent questions to your state coordinator, present it to the youth at your church.

We come from a small church. How many kids are needed to have a Bible Quizzing team? You don’t have to be a mega-church to have a quiz team! A team can have as much as 5 quizzers or as little as two. If you have a couple young people and a coach at your church that wants to participate, you qualify for Bible Quizzing! Even if there if just one young person that wants to join, they can join another team from the state to be involved in the ministry. How does the quizzing work? Each tournament will have a number of teams that play each other in a bracket format with two teams at a time playing. At the board, there are two sides (a red and a yellow) with a team sitting on either side. Each color has three places for quizzers at the board with chairs 5 to 7 feet behind the board for coaches and alternate quizzers (up to two). During the actual quiz there are twenty questions that increase in difficulty and point value as the quiz proceeds. The first eight questions (Questions 1-8) are simple questions worth ten points each. The next nine questions (Questions 9-17) are a little bit more difficult and are worth 20 points each. The last three questions (Questions 18-20) are difficult questions that require more time to answer. The team with the highest points at the end of the quiz wins the match! How does a quizzer answer a question? The quizmaster (the person who organizes the quiz and reads the question, typically the state quizzing coordinator or assistant) reads each question after which both teams have 5 seconds to hit their buzzer to attempt the question. The quizzer who hits the buzzer first has the opportunity to answer the question; however, if neither team hits the buzzer in 5 seconds, the question is timed-out and the quizmaster proceeds to the next question. When a quizzer buzzes in, they have 30 seconds to answer the question to their fullest ability. If they correctly answer the question, the quizmaster will say, “That is correct” and the correct quizzer and their team will receive the amount of points the question was worth. If the quizzer incorrectly answers the question or if time is called during the quizzers answer, the quizmaster will say, “That is incorrect” and the quizzer and their team will lose one-half the point value of the question. What materials do you need? Each quizzer only needs a box of Bible Quizzing cards to start the year. There are many other awesome materials available to quizzers but not all will benefit a novice team. As you get more involved in the quizzing ministry, ask other teams and quizzers what materials benefit their personal study. It would benefit every quizzer, especially novice quizzers, to have a rules manual. Coaches will benefit from having a set of color-coded verse sheets with all the year’s material on the front and back of several laminated pages. If the coach has a windows based laptop that’s accessible to them, there is a BQ reference system in which a coach can locate every verse containing a certain word in study. Another thing that coaches need is score sheets. Score sheets help the coach/assistant coach keep up with the score during the game. A coach may refer to the score table to ensure they have correctly recorded the score; however, it is of great importance that a coach can see what happened on every question during a quiz. Coaches will also need a Rules Manual. A Rules Manual is the greatest tool for understanding how quizzing works. A team will need a buzzer system for practices. The team will also need questions to practice with. Many times a district will sell questions after a quiz tournament; however, these are questions of material that the quizzers already know. It is always good to have new questions to ask over the new material during weekly practices. The source for all things quizzing is www.bqpowers.com. Bro. and Sis. Gary and JoAnn Powers create most all of the materials for the study in quizzing each year.

What are Bible Quizzing cards? Bible Quizzing cards are a set of two sided flashcards that contain every verse of study and its respective reference. On one side is the reference (e.g. “Luke 4:16”) and on the other side of that same card is the verse text (e.g. “And he came to Nazareth where he had been brought up, and as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up for to read.”) These cards are made specifically for each division and its relevant amount of verses. Why not just use the Bible to learn instead of quiz cards? Bible Quizzing cards allow a quizzer to mix up their material and quote it out of order. “Why,” you say? I’m glad you asked. First and foremost if a quizzer is to use these verses in life, they must not only know the verse, but where to flip their Bible to in order to show others the verse. This is a powerful witnessing tool! When you are speaking to some about Christ, you’re not only quoting the verse word for word but you’ve flipped the Bible open to that chapter and verse for them to see that what you are saying is exactly how it is written. Directly related to the quizzing, you need your cards mixed up because the questions are mixed up. Each question in a quiz is randomly generated and the only way to be completely prepared for any verse is by having studied them out of order. What material will be covered? Each year has a different theme and verse list. In years past we’ve studied Heroes of the Faith, Epistles of Paul to the Saints, Acts of the Apostles, and the book of Luke. This year we’re excited about having the theme “Unashamed” studying the books of Romans and James. What material do the different monthly quizzes cover? As the year progresses, the material cumulates. The first tournament may be over 40 to 100 verses and the second may be over 120 to 180 verses (which include the 40 to 100 learned for the first tournament). It is not beneficial for a quizzer to only learn new verses in expectation for an upcoming quiz seeing that the other verses already know are going to be quizzed over as well. Your district coordinator would be your contact to find out how much material will be covered for each tournament. Where will we travel to? Traveling is an exciting part of quizzing! Quizzing trips range from district tournaments around your state to national tournaments in famous cities around the nation. Each month teams go to state tournaments. There are four regional extravaganzas each year where teams from states in a region come together for a combination tournament. The regions with extravaganzas include: Eastern, Western, North Central and South Central. Depending on the location of the Bible Quizzing Extravaganza (BQE), this is one of the farthest tournaments teams will normally travel to. Team may also travel to invitational tournaments throughout the year. How much does it cost to get a quiz team started? For each quizzer, a box of cards costs around 20 dollars. A team will have several expenses to take care of. The biggest expense in starting a quiz team is purchasing the Bible Quizzing buzzer system. These usually are priced about 150 dollars. A quiz program typically only needs one buzzer system for every 7 or 8 years. The yearly materials range in cost depending on the amount of materials that a team buys. To get an estimate of how much you’ll need to pay, look at www.bqpowers.com for a pricing list. Where can I find good fundraisers? The Internet is an awesome resource for finding fundraising ideas. Do note that you should not have to pay any money for fundraising ideas. There are plenty of quality ideas on the Internet that are free to use. Also speak to your state quizmaster and other coaches for ideas about great fundraisers for Bible quizzing.

Tips on how to be a Great Coach!

1. Promote. Promote. Promote. And again I say promote. The key to success with any youth function is promotion – the same is true of Bible quizzing. Start early and promote often. Give the quizzers something to be excited about and other students an incentive to get involved. Be passionate about quizzing. 2. Prepare ahead of time. You have asked your quizzers to prepare throughout the week so it is your responsibility to do the same. Give yourself time before practice to schedule and prepare what you want to accomplish and where each quizzer should be in their memorization. It is a good idea to hand out regular memorization schedules and hold each quizzer accountable. If you struggle to put in the effort, eventually your quizzers will follow your lead. 3. Reward quizzers for their hard work. To be a Bible quizzer requires a lot of hard work and commitment on behalf of your young people. Make it worth their while. Don’t be afraid to publicly recognize them in front of the church and individually during practice. Make it fun and spice it up. 4. Be stern when necessary. At some point throughout a full season of quizzing your team will begin to slack. They are teenagers, so what do you expect? It is during these dry spells that you provide the much needed “motivation” that they need to get back on track. Try not to fall into the temptation of being negative at every practice, but definitely don’t be afraid to give motivation when needed. 5. Finish the year. I’m convinced that this is one of the most important goals of the quiz season – finishing what was started. Having an opportunity to compete for a chance to travel to NABQT is the most rewarding achievement a quizzer can experience. If your team is able to make the trip to a nationals or even a regional tournament, the chances of your quizzer returning for the next season will increase dramatically. Stay committed. If you will stick to your foundation and continually work on establishing and building off of it, you will be successful in God’s Kingdom through Bible quizzing.

Bible Quizzing Study Techniques & Guidelines

Lonnie Brown Former Missouri SBQ Coordinator

I. ALL QUIZZERS

x Pray before you study. x Know what verses you are going to learn and review before you sit down to study. (Have a plan and a

goal). x Study new verses and review some every day.

o Consistency will keep you from cramming. o Complete your assignment!

x Try and study at the same time every day (and in the same place if you can) o Don’t allow yourself any distraction. o Concentrate on the assignment to be done and not on the time spent studying.

DOING THE ABOVE ITEMS WILL FORM A GOOD HABIT IN YOU!

x Use your verse cards. o To memorize. o To reference. o To mix up the verses. o You can take them with you wherever you go!

x Practice referencing and quoting on the Bible Quizzing Assistant computer system (if you coach has a computer for this).

II. JUNIOR QUIZZERS

x Memorize all quotation verses (and as many of the others as you can) o “Phrase Method”

¾ Break verse down into short phrases. ¾ Learn one phrase, then next phrase, etc. until the whole verse is known. ¾ Check yourself to make sure you are learning it right!

o “Writing Method” (especially good for Juniors who do not read well). ¾ Write the verse one or more times until you know it. ¾ Say the verse to mom or dad to check yourself.

o Quote the verses aloud to mom or dad (or someone else). This should be the new verses you learn and the old ones you are reviewing.

o Have mom or dad begin reading the verse, and as soon as you can, interrupt them, and give the verse reference.

o Same as above, except after you interrupt them, finish quoting the verse and then give the reference.

o Have mom or dad read you questions from the Study Guide and when they are finished reading, you give the answer. (Make sure mom or dad keep time!)

o Same as above, except you interrupt them while they are reading, finish the question and then give the answer.

o Mix your verse cards, look at the reference, and then quote the verse. Check to see if you are right.

o Mix your verse cards, look at the words of the verse, and then give the reference. Check to see if you are right.

o Later in the quiz year, learn any charts or lists your coach may give you. II. SENIOR QUIZZERS

x Memorize all verses (this means know the reference too!) o “Phrase Method” o “Fifteen Method” o “Phrase Fifteen Method” o Your method – whatever works for you!

x Referencing (** the best way to review material **) o Use your verse cards. o Compute your results and chart your progress (“Do or die Method” or “Point-Percentage

Method). x Speedquoting

o Compute your results and chart your progress. x Quote aloud to yourself (using verse cards) or quote to a friend (who can use mixed-up verse cards or

the Bible). x Read aloud (helps catch and correct any mistakes made in memorizing).

o “Triple Repetition Reading Method” o “Double Repetition Reading Method” o Speedreading (helps to refresh chapter in your mind and visualize the sequence of events in

the chapter). o Read the introductory material in the Study Guide before each chapter. (It is easier to learn

when you understanding meaning of words, background information, etc.) x Prepare and learn charts by chapter, and then by book.

o Very good preparation for cross-reference questions. o Not only names, geographical locations, body parts, etc. but also questions, commands,

statements, and common phrases at beginning/end of verses. x Write quiz questions and make up quizzes.

o Answering who, what, where, when, why, how, under what condition, how many, etc. o Not done to learn the material, but to help you learn the difference in point value of questions,

and most importantly, learn how to interrupt and complete questions. x Have someone ask you questions, or use the Study Guide questions yourself, covering up the answers.

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE WHAT YOU CAN DO, SET CHALLENGING GOALS, BE CONSISTENT, AND

FOLLOW THROUGH!

TOURNAMENT QUIZZING

What good are all of these study methods if they’re not put into action? You must set GOALS and strive to meet them.

x Preparation o Know the amount of material to be covered at the tournament. o Concentrate on reviewing these chapters while continuing to learn new material. o Reinforce those chapters with extra referencing.

x Travel

o Take advantage of travel time by quoting, referencing, answering questions, and speedquoting.

o Try to keep each other’s nerves “loose.”

x At the Tournament o Relax – be yourself! o Meet new people – have fun – but don’t forget whey you’re there. o Be outgoing – remember others are as nervous as you are. o Quiz to the best of YOUR ABILITY, not someone else’s. o Let God use you and shape your attitudes. o Learn to accept victory and defeat gracefully. o Be an example to others – you are a representative of your church and Pastor – what

impression will others have of your church? x Going Home

o Be positive! Evaluate your own performance. o While emphasizing the positive, don’t overlook the negatives. o Don’t pass the blame with lame excuses! o Set goals to improve for the next tournament.

ATTITUDES

x Quizzing Is a Ministry! My primary goal is to grow as a Christian.

x Quizzer’s Creed – Digest it!

x Remember God cares and notices! Time spent in His Word is time spent with HIM.

x Don’t CRAM! Over learn, layer upon layer. We remember more if we “spread out” learning; it prevents “choking” when the pressure is on.

x Be ready and willing to give up some things – quizzing requires sacrifice.

x Trust in God – Zech. 4:6 “Not by might, or by power, but by Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts…”

DISCIPLINE Adopt an “I WILL MAKE MYSELF” Attitude

x Make Time To Study! There will never just “be enough time.”

x Have a REGULAR study time and place.

x Set goals for yourself in addition to the goals your coach sets for you. Make sure your goals keep you reaching.

x Be faithful to fill in your DAILY/Weekly Time Sheet. One of the key words to success in

quizzing is “DAILY!”

x Be self-motivated. Don’t make your coach “ride your case” all the time.

x Obey your coach – especially at the quiz board – if he/she tells you to do something, then DO IT! If it was the wrong decision, the coach bears the blames.

Charting

I. WHAT IS CHARTING? x Vital study method – especially for a visual quizzer (colors) x Pulls together memorized material in a totally different way for those drawn to statistics (ex: Paul

mentioned 3 times in chapter 1: verses 1, 7, 13) x Aids the very methodical quizzer in locating things that are sometimes hidden in straight memorization

(ex: a phrase that appears twice in one chapter and maybe again 10 chapters later)

II. WHEN AND WHERE SHOUD YOU CHART? x Devise a color code unique to you (see how to chart) x Color code a study booklet of the material (ex: xerox a Bible; pocket size Bible of just the book of study

are available; verse cards either hand-written or ordered from the Youth Division) x After finished memorizing the chapter – consolidate all color-coded items to a chapter chart with

headings Ex: Chapter 1 People Places John vs. 6, 17 Bethabara vs. 2 8

Jordan vs. 28 *** Note: It would be helpful to color-code headings of the chart so that you can associate the color with

the heading.

III. HOW SHOULD YOU CHART? x Purchase a standard set of markers (ex: Crayola) x Develop a color code for you entire team to use (ex: blue = people, green = parts of the body, orange =

places, etc.) x Make sure that everyone uses the same color code so you’re not mixed up at practices and when

you study together. x Color-code each verse as you memorize it. This will help the verse to stick in your mind. x Don’t go overboard! Don’t color code too much – otherwise you’ve developed a situation very similar to

what you started with – only in reverse (ex: you go from NO color and everything looking alike to TOO MUCH color and everything looking alike).

x When you’ve finished the chapter, combine all items color-coded under common headings on one piece of paper.

IV. WHY SHOULD YOU CHART?

x It is much easier to visualize things in color than in black and white. x One word color coded in a verse may help you to remember the verse if you’ve blanked out (ex: quote

John 1:6? You hit the buzzer and your mind goes blank BUT you know that John is underlined in blue. More likely than not you’ll put it all together within the 30 seconds you have to answer the question).

x It adds variety to study time. It gives you more to do than just memorize words. x In the long run, you’ll be so glad you color coded and charted. Many questions are asked at

tournaments, districts, and nationals that require charts because there is NO way you can quote through all verses of the material in 30 seconds.

The Art of Interrupting

I. INTRODUCTION

Effective interrupting is an art (acquired skill), not an accident. An effective interruption is one done at the earliest possible moment. What is the difference between earliest possible moment and too early? Interrupting at the earliest possible moment involves a little educated guesswork (intuition), whereas an interruption that is too early is simply an uneducated guess.

II. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO BE ABLE TO INTERRUPT EFFECTIVELY? Most obviously, to be able to respond before anyone else. After a certain point in the quizzing season, most quizzers have memorized and reviewed so much that they could answer just about any question. So, in order to demonstrate your knowledge, you should not only be able to answer any question, but you should be able to interrupt most questions, also. To be able to respond correctly. Interrupting doesn’t mean that you should make up questions. On the contrary, a good, effective interruption prevents you from having to make up a question. Unfortunately, interrupting does involve a lot of probability, and may incorrect responses may result, but practicing effective interruption techniques can help you to be as accurate as you decide to be.

III. EFFECTIVE INTERRUPTION TECHNIQUES Listen to and watch the quizmaster as you hit the buzzer. When you learn to recognize key words, you can anticipate what the quizmaster will say, and you can verify your educated hunch by watching and listening as you hit. If your educated guess is wrong, many times watching and listening to the quizmaster (rather than the buzzer) can give you a new clue or key word to help you with the correct completion of the question. Learn to recognize key words and common question patterns. Watch for interrogative question “flags” such as who, what, how, when, where, why, and which (as in which verse). The quizmaster’s voice inflection and speed in reading often help the quizzer to know when to interrupt properly. Just as important as recognizing key words is being able to recognize common question patterns. Here are a few:

¾ Direct Questions will sometimes end with an interrogative “flag”, and usually it is safe to hit

as the quizmaster says the word (insert example #1). ¾ Two-Part Questions almost always have pattern, and once you adjust to this, you can

anticipate the second part of a two-part question. It is usually safe to hit a word or two after the conjunction (and, or, but, etc.) (insert example #2). Another common type of two-part question begins with “how many. Almost invariably the second part of the question will be “and what are they?” Sometime there are exceptions, but there is always an element of risk involved in interrupting.

¾ Multiple-part Questions are similar to two-part questions in that if the quizzer catches on to the flow of the question, he can interrupt right after the conjunction but with the key word (insert example #3).

35

Q U I Z Z I N G R E S O U R C E P A C K E T

¾ Quotation questions take many forms. One of the most common forms is this one (insert example #4). Hit with the verse or chapter (whichever the quizmaster says last), being cautious for compound numbers such as twenty-six or forty-three. Sometimes there will be quotation questions in which the quizmaster reads a verse and says to quote the verse immediately preceding or following the verse, which he read. In situations like these, knowing which verses are priority quotation verses can sometimes help you to eliminate one of the verses, and that will allow you to interrupt at the earliest possible moment.

IV. CONCLUSION Being able to interrupt effectively takes time and practice. By training yourself in techniques such as the ones listed above, and thinking before you answer; effective interrupting can be a skill that you acquire before you know it!

V. EXAMPLES (Book of John)

EXAMPLE #1 Direction question worth 10 points: In verse 17 of chapter 2, his disciples remembered that wha///t was written? (answer: The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up)

EXAMPLE #2 Two-part question worth 20 points: Chapter 2 verse six speaks of how many waterpots containing how ///many firkins apiece? (answer: 6 waterpots of stone containing two or three firkins apiece)

EXAMPLE #3 Three-part question worth 20 points: According to chapter 1 verse 14, what was made flesh, what did we behold, and of ///what was it full? (answer: The word was made flesh; we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father; full of grace and truth)

EXAMPLE #4 Quotation question worth 20 points: Quote John chapter 1 verse forty-t///wo. (answer: And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou are Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone)

Quizzers’ Creed

1. I will pray before I study.

2. I will study every day.

3. I will pray after I study.

4. I will fast at least once a week.

5. I can and will memorize.

6. The keys to memorization are repetition and concentration.

7. I will concentrate—shutting out everything except my verses while studying.

8. I will review on schedule—even if it means postponing new learning.

9. I can and will improve my buzzer speed.

10. Every question is a new game.

11. My attitude and spirit will not be based on my performance. A good attitude always makes me a

winner in God’s eyes.

12. I will always remain kind to Quiz Masters, Judges, and other quizzers.

13. I will listen to the question label so I can interrupt intelligently.

14. I will listen for and learn to anticipate key words, instead of being a “guessing quizzer.”

15. I will not wait to think of the answer before I hit the buzzer. I will hit and then think and then answer.

16. If I stumble, I will stop and think, “Is this fixable?” If so, I will carefully “fix” my question or answer. If

not, I will stop and not give out “freebies.”

17. I will not be intimidated. God has not given me the spirit of fear. I can do all things through Christ who

strengthens me.

18. I will practice interrupting or wish I had.

The Beginning Affects the Ending

Everyone realizes the importance of a good beginning – be it the first act of a play, the opening kickoff or

whatever, you need a positive beginning. The quality of the start definitely has impact on the rest of the

event. So it is with Bible Quizzing; how you start in January and February will definitely impact the rest of

the year. Whether that impact is positive or negative is up to you and what kind of start you have.

It is so vital that you establish and develop good habits NOW that will endure through the entire season.

We must understand that a habit is something you do consistently for 30 days! So here are the

implications for the quizzer and his desire to start well.

You must form the habit of consistent study. Right now you must not let yourself have gaps in your

study. Never let a day go by without at least some quality review. If you study a day then skip one or two

and cram on the third day, you’ll reap a sad harvest of inconsistency in the spring and summer.

Also, determine to set the habit of completing assignment ON TIME! Those who are behind and unable to

keep up in the first part of the year will be scrambling to catch up for Extravaganza and Districts.

However, realize that you can create and form habits now at the beginning – consistent, daily study;

completing assignments when they are due will be the rule rather than the exception, and you’ll enjoy

a great season built on a strong beginning.

ZACH IN ACTION “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit” (Zech. 4:6)

1. I will remember that the Lord considers my study times time spent with Him. 2. I will quiz unto the Lord and not against the other team or against my own team members.

3. After I prepare with all my might, I will put the hard work behind me and reach to the Lord,

trusting Him to put what He knows is best for me in my hand.

4. If I win, I will not let pride in my heart but will give glory to Jesus for the victory He gave, and remember where any ability comes from in the first place.

5. If I lose, I will not sink into despair but will trust God to teach me the lessons I need to learn in

defeat.

6. I will always pray before I study, asking Jesus for His help and blessing. I will pray for my other team members and coaches each day.

7. When I feel like giving up, I will refuse to do so, because I quiz by His might and power and that

supply is endless (Remember the 3-legged stool?)

8. I will always remember that my coach is the leader and will follow directions always – even when I don’t like it or understand why. I know God cannot bless disobedience.

9. When my team members or other quizzers do well, I will rejoice with them in their joy.

10. When my team mates or other quizzers do not do well, I will encourage them and pray for them.

11. I will remember that God will now judge me by my success in the eyes of others, but by my

faithfulness in preparation.

12. I will always remember that I am filling my heart full of the Word of God so that I can be ready to fill my place in the Kingdom full of knowledge and power!!

13. At every tournament, I will be aware that I represent my team, my pastor, my church, my city and

above all – MY LORD!
