Special Education Process The Special Education process can be a
very lengthy process as well as a confusing one. Where do parents start to find information on what an IEP is? What things can help a parent feel more at ease going into their first IEP meeting? The next slides will give some information that will help parents feel more comfortable/more knowledgeable about the process.

Learning Disabilities What does it mean to have a learning
disability? In what academic areas could my child have a disability? Can they get help? According to NINDS “a learning disability is a disorder
that affects the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention.”
Some of the common learning disabilities include: basic reading, reading comprehension, math calculations, or writing.
Treatment is available for learning disabilities and can include working with a special education teacher, medication, therapy, and/or tutoring depending on the child’s needs.

autism? What are some common signs of Autism? What treatments are offered for students with autism? According to NINDS, “Autism is a range of complex

ADHD What is ADHD? Can my child get academic
help with ADHD? Do I need a diagnosis from my child’s doctor stating they have ADHD to receive any special education services? ADHD- (also known as Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder) can include focusing difficulties, hyperactivity, behavior issues, or a combination of all/some of these. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002518/)
Can my child get any academic help with ADHD? Treatment can include: medication, therapy, and
special education services
ADHDDo I need a diagnosis from my child’s
doctor stating they have ADHD to receive any special education services? This question is both yes and no. When you and
your student’s teacher suspect that ADHD may be something your student may have, the first place you should start is your pediatrician. A medical diagnosis of ADHD can help in the IEP process and can possibly qualify for services under Other Health Impairment. Students still need to get tested to see if learning disabilities or other disabilities/areas may be eligible for qualification too and all of that can be discussed with the members of the IEP team to get the best education for your student.
