Children’s Mental Health Week Children’s Mental Health Week will take place from: 3-9 February 2020. Set up by children’s mental health charity Place2Be, the week shines a spotlight on the importance of children and young people’s mental health. This year’s theme is ‘Find your Brave’. In school, we are aiming to raise the importance of supporting children and young people’s mental health during the week. If you would like further information, support or resources please look at: https://www.childrensmentalhealthweek.org.uk/ On Thursday we will be having a visit from the Local Authority regarding reading and the implications of its leadership for the school. This is known as a deep dive, which is an in-depth examination of reading. It will focus on: Is reading taught in a systematic and coherent way? Does the school prioritise reading as a key skill and resource accordingly? Is planning effective? Is reading made inclusive? Does provision match need? Does home reading support effective reading progress? Do pupils take books home that are matched to their reading/ phonics level? We look forward to a busy and exciting week of learning for both staff and pupils. Green postcards: Please can you let us know if you have received a positivity post card via the post for your child. Attendance News!

Our attendance this week has dropped to 95.89%. This means our year to date attendance is just below the national average. No classes have been awarded with a 100% attendance or punctuality, although some classes were very close. May we remind parents that arriving on time to school is very important? We understand that sometimes things can go wrong but coming late to class regularly can be disruptive for children as well as teachers. Thank you.

Nuts at School

The school is strictly a NUT FREE ZONE. Several children have severe nut allergies so please DO NOT give your child any food containing nuts such as nut bars, peanut butter sandwiches, snacks containing nuts etc. Thank you!

Reading how can you help Please note all teachers will be monitoring reading records closely this term and we expect all parents to support us in our drive to ensure that the pupils attending Hollydale are becoming critical readers. In EYFS and KS1, we expect parents and carers to comment in the records at least once a week and in KS2 please can you monitor that your child is keeping a log of their daily reading? All children should be reading every day for a minimum of 15 minutes. In recent weeks, I am disappointed to say that a small minority of reading books that we have been sending home weekly have been returned in extremely unsuitable conditions that we have had to dispose of them. Please note that we expect school property to be treated with respect. We instil this in children as part of one of our core values whilst they are at school and we need you to uphold this at home. We do not have the money to replenish books due to negligence. If books are returned back to school in a state where we cannot reuse them for other children to enjoy, then we will not send books home for your child.

All about Maths! Staff and pupils are looking forward to next week Maths activities all about measures. We are launching the week with exciting workshops delivered by the Bubbly Maths Company. Please support us by making a £1 contribution towards the cost of this event. The children will engage in a range of hands on activities throughout the week, including cooking. On Friday children will be able to come to school wearing a t-shirt, or any clothing showing numbers or any other maths, by bringing £1. All donations collected will be sent to the NSPCC charity (National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children). We will also end the week, on Friday at 3.30pm, with a maths exhibition in Chestnut class. We are looking forward to see you all there. Maths workshop Year 3 and 4 enjoyed their second session with Toby from My Bnk. This week they developed their knowledge of salaries and bank accounts by thinking about the importance of decisions when it comes to spending money. They even tried to do some budgeting themselves! They soon discovered that is was better to be a ‘super saver’ rather than a ‘big spender’. They look forward to their final session in two weeks’ time. In the meantime, please engage in your ‘My Bnk’ package and explore the booklets and activities with your children.

We have our very own Book Hut!

As you will be aware last year in autumn, we were given a book hut for a term by the London Children’s Book

Project. The book hut created such a brilliant buzz around reading at Hollydale and we saw lots of children during their lunch break selecting books from the book hut and choosing to read as part of their lunch hour.

We wanted to keep that enthusiasm for reading alive and so decided to purchase our very own book hut! This is located in the main playground on the wall near the school office. We are hoping to run the book hut on the premise that children use it as a ‘book swap’. They can take a book as long as they also donate a book. If you

have any books that are in good condition that you would like to donate to our book hut, please leave them in the school office for the attention of Miss Sultana. Any donations would be gratefully received. Reading is a

vital skill for life and it is at the heart of our school curriculum.

Hollydale Reading Survey – Y2 to Y6 Children

Headlines

In Spring 2020 we asked all of our Y2 to Y6 children to participate in a survey about reading. The survey was adapted from the ‘National Literacy Trust Reading for Pleasure Survey for KS2 Children.’ Reading has been a

Page 11: Resilience Working together to be the best that we can be … · 2020. 2. 6. · Sushan R. Sharma. Hollydale Primary School, Hollydale Road, Nunhead, ... Year 3 and 4 enjoyed their

main focus for Hollydale this year and the survey was conducted to support us in a continuous cycle of review and improvement. The results of the survey are incredibly positive and have enabled us to identify some clear areas of development to further improve reading for our children. Overall, 71% of Hollydale children say they enjoy reading with 52% saying they love it, 19% say they like reading a lot and 21% saying they like reading a bit. 75% of children consider themselves to be better than average readers which tells us that children have high levels of self-esteem and good self-awareness around reading. Many of our children would like to read more if they had more time. Additional factors they have identified that would encourage them to read more are: if the books were more interesting, books had more pictures, and if families encouraged them to read more. It is wonderful to hear that the majority of our children participate in regular reading practice at home. The vast majority of children enjoy reading time at school. 77% of children enjoy participating in quizzes to show they have understood what they have read. This tells us that quizzing has had a positive impact on readers from a range of abilities and interests. It is important that our children understand how fundamental and enriching reading is to our daily lives. Whilst 31% of them read because it’s fun, 25% believe it helps them learn new things, and 15% believe it to be a skill for life.
