Researchers wishing to contribute papers on any aspect of naval historyto the 2015-16 seminar series should email a title and a 300 word abstractof their proposed paper, plus a one page CV to Dr Duncan Redford [email protected]

This conference addresses the vital connections between seapower andpolitics. It will examine the ways seapower has interacted with the politicalprocess and the personalities who wielded seapower to greater or lessereffect.

This conference will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the launching ofHMS Victory in 1765 and examine the national effort needed to producethe sailing navy and the impact it had on finance, industrialisation,technology, the environment, politics, strategy, defence and wider Britishand imperial society.

Saving the Nation; striking the enemy:the Royal Navy and 1940

4, 5 September

75 years have passed since the German invasions of Scandinavia, Franceand the Low Countries, since the Battle of Britain and since the Battle ofthe Atlantic took on a new level of ferocity. The images and myths of thesebattles and campaigns in 1940 still resonate with British society. Thisconference will examine the myths and reality of 1940 from a maritimeperspective.
