Research on different types of music

When making our music, we considered various instruments that would be needed in order to make our background track. For example, for our track we are using the drums, guitar and our voices on Garage Band. However, we needed to adapt to other styles of music to be able to make our own track unique. One other style is English indie rock and related to that is a band alt-J. They released a song called Hunger of the Pine, which sampled a part of Miley Cyrus’s song ‘4X4’. They have elements such as using the guitar and drums as a part of their song, however it’s more electro indie rock compared to our track – we are on the other hand using the same sort of instruments. The reason for not completely adapting to their style of music is because it wouldn’t suit the opening sequence; it creates a completely different atmosphere, which doesn’t relate to how the protagonist is feeling or how he’s behaving. Home has music that builds up and develops which is what the Coming of Age genre is – the development of the character, but Hunger of the Pine is more on the level of being a credits song rather than a background track in the opening sequence.

The XX intro is an indie pop group rather than rock, which includes no lyrics at all. The mixing and recording was held between December 2008 and May 2009 which implies that creating a piece of music is more time consuming than anticipated. It took place at XL Studios, which is located in London, England, however Intro’s production was handled by Jamie xx, who is also a mixer. We can apply the same sort of mixing theory to our own track – mixing our music and recording it on Garage Band.
