Thesechallengesincludetheneedtofindbetterwaystopreservematerialsofcriticalimportancetothenation’sculturalheritage—fromfragileartifactsandmanuscriptstoanalogrecordingsanddigitalassets subject to technological obsolescence—and to develop advanced modes of organizing,searching,discovering,andusingsuchmaterials.This program recognizes that finding solutions to complex problems often requires forminginterdisciplinaryprojectteams,bringingtogetherparticipantswithexpertiseinthehumanities;inpreservation;andininformation,computer,andnaturalscience.Allprojectsmustdemonstratehowadvancesinpreservationandaccesswouldbenefitthecultural heritage community in supporting humanities research, teaching, or publicprogramming.Awards:Upto$350,000ResearchandDevelopmentoffers two funding tiers inorder toaddressprojectsat allstagesofdevelopmentandimplementation.TierI:PlanningandBasicResearchTierIprovidesawardsupto$75,000foraperiodofperformanceofonetotwoyears.Thislevelsupportsthefollowingactivities:

• planningandpreliminaryworkforlarge-scaleresearchanddevelopmentprojects;and• stand-alonebasicresearchprojects,suchascasestudies,experiments,orthedevelopment

ofmethods,models,andtools.TierII:AdvancedImplementationTierIIprovidesawardsupto$350,000foraperiodofperformanceofonetothreeyears.Thislevelsupportsprojectsatamoreadvancedstageofimplementationforthefollowingactivities:
