For my magazine, I would like to emulate the Kerrang magazine.

About Kerrang

Kerrang is a UK-based magazine devoted to rock music. It was first published on 6 June 1981 as a

one-off supplement in the Sounds newspaper. Named after the onomatopoeic word that derives

from the sound made when playing a power chord on an electric guitar, Kerrang was initially

devoted to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the rise ofhard rock acts. In the early 2000s it

became the best-selling British music newspaper.

Launched as a monthly magazine, Kerrang began to appear on a fortnightly basis later, and in 1987 it

went weekly. During the 1980s and early 1990s the magazine placed many thrash and glam metal

acts on the cover but later discarded them when grunge acts such as Nirvana rose to fame. Readers

often criticize the magazine for repeating this process every time a new musical trend becomes

popular.

With the emergence ofemo and metalcore, Kerrang began to heavily feature this musical trend.

However, the revamp was not welcomed by all readers and many complaints were received about

Kerrang's sudden emphasis on emo and metalcore music. However, this emergence took the

magazine into its most commercially successful period with a record ever ABC for the title of 80,186

copies.

The publishers of Kerrang are the Bauer Media Group. Bauer Media Group is a multinational mediacompany headquartered in Hamburg, Germany which operates in 15 countries worldwide.

week

Bauer Verlagsgruppe has been managed by four generations of the Bauer family. Originally a small

printing house, The Bauer Publishing Group has grown into a worldwide publishing and media

company. The Bauer Publishing Group comprises 282 magazines worldwide in 15 countries, as well

as TV and radio stations. Bauer started in the UK with the launch of Bella magazine in 1987 and as H

Bauer Publishing became Britain's third largest publisher. Bauer further expanded in the UK with the

purchase of Emap Consumer Media and Emap Radio in 2008 to become the UK's biggest publishing

group.

Kerrangs front covers usually

feature a band but

sometimes just contain a

single artist. The figures on

the front of the magazine

always stand out because the

background is usually plain

and lack different colours and

images. The anchored text

next to the image is bold and

colourful, making the text

stand out, making it eye

catching, making the reader

want to buy the magazine.

The figure is always located

on top of the title of the

magazine and always obeys

the rule of thirds.

Kerrangs contents pages

Kerrangs contents pages usually feature a large and dominant image

of a single artist which normally takes up most of the page. The pages

are always separated by sub headings which make it easier for the

reader to choose a page. These sub headings are always in bright

colours making them stand out. The title of the page is always located

in either the top left or top right and does not take up the whole of

the width of the page and only takes up about a quarter of the width.

Kerrangs Article Pages

Kerrangs double page spreads and article pages contain a large and

dominant image of an artist or a band which is locate on the right

page but does overlap a bit on the left page. Also located on the

pages are a few smaller images of the featured artist or band. The

background of the two pages are usually a dark and plain colour

which makes the image of the featured artist stand out, making them

more eye catching.

readership. 48% ofKerrangs readers are in the ABC1 profile with the mean age as 25. The
