Top Nine Research- Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement

Strategy We can use this strategy when

    1. Identifying similarities and differences This strategy is used when students are first in

the classroom. We can use this strategy to

determine a students prior learning, a student

can make a connection with the teacher or other

students. This strategy can also use when

students are comparing and contrasting different

    items.

    2. Summarizing and note taking By summarizing and taking notes of classroom

lectures, students are able to understand what

they hear. Summarizing and note taking also

help student try to determine what information

is more important. This will help them learn

how to pick out key detailed information.

    3. Reinforcing effort It is important to recognize student for all of

their efforts even the smallest effort. Make the

ultimate goal clear, but set personal goals for

students to achieve. It is important that students

understand that with effort comes achievement.

    4. Homework and practice at appropriate level

    of difficulty.

    Homework provides practice. Practice ensures

curriculum. This strategy also promotes higher

achievements, and increase learning outside of

    the classroom.5. Nonlinguistic representations, graphic

    organizers

    Graphics organizers provide visual information

that will help students organize their thoughts

and ideas in order to better communicate with

teachers and other students. Using our students

kinesthetic learners abilities comes into play

also when students need another way to

understand the information. We can tell our

students the information, let them see the

information, but they also need to use hands on

techniques in order to get a good grasps of the

    information.

    6. Cooperative group learning This strategy teaches students to work together

and to communicate with each other. This

strategy teaches them how to depend on each

other with an understanding that if they fail, its

a group failure. This strategy also teaches

students time management, and gives them each

    a role in the group.

    7. Setting objectives and providing feedback This strategy allow teachers to determine

learning goals, and it gives the students a chance

personalize the goals teachers set for them. It is

also important that teachers give students

feedback on their assignments so that they know

where they stand.8. Generating and testing hypotheses These strategies allow students to ask question

that helps them apply their understanding by the

questions asked. This strategy allows students to

    correct their misperceptions.

    9. Questions, Cues, and advance organizers By asking questions and staging cues gives

teachers insight into what students already know

and what they need to know. Advance

organizers allow students to learn new concepts

    and new vocabulary.
