Why should I live on campus next semester? As many Simmons students know, the time for next semester’s housing selection is here! Are you going to be living on campus? Are you going to live at home? Are you going to find an apartment? You may find yourself pondering the pros and cons of living on campus as you make your decision. Since you have already picked up and started reading this article, you can ponder no more! As you read on, you will be informed of a few great opportunities that living on campus offers you and maybe you’ll even decide to take advantage of them.• Living with Friends

Ever imagine what it would be like to live with some of your best friends? It’d be really fun, wouldn’t it? Well, by living on campus you can experience this!

• Take Part in Campus ActivitiesLiving on campus means that you are always around the action. Late night socials like Quadside Late Night, musical performances, movie screenings, and other fun things that you would miss otherwise are always happening on the Residence Campus.

• ConvenienceThe Simmons Residence Campus is a short 5-10 minute walk to the Academic Campus (depending on how late you wake up or how fast you walk). Living on campus gives you quick access to the Fenway T stop, Longwood Medical Area, and Coolidge Corner. The city of Boston is at your doorstep!

• Keep it SimpleWhen you pay for residence, you are also paying for a lot of extras! These include maintenance fees, so you don’t have to pay every time your shower doesn’t work. They also include renting furniture and access to kitchens, computer labs, and multiple living areas. You may look at your housing payments as large, but just think of everything that is covered by that bill.

• Meal PlansInstead of having to go grocery shopping after class and worry about what you’re going to make for dinner, you can simply walk to Bartol or the Fens for a variety of options each day and night. You can also head to Quadside for late night snacking and a space to be with friends.

• Try living on your ownAs a freshman, sophomore, junior, or even a senior, you may not feel completely prepared to live on your own. The Simmons Residence Campus acts as a middle ground between living at home and being completely independent. By living on campus, you learn about what it’s like to live on your own without the pressure of actually living on your own.

• Get to Know New PeopleLiving on campus gives you the opportunity to meet people that you wouldn’t meet in your classes or extracurricular activities. You also get to live with these new friends! Your social life is always running hot when you live on campus.

• Safe & Secure CommunityArmed with tap-key entry systems, each Simmons Residence Hall is safe and secure. You don’t have to worry about people entering your building who should not be there. Also, Public Safety acts as a security force for every Simmons student and they are easy to contact in the case of an emergency.

Whether you have already filled out our application or are still pondering the opportunity we hope that after reading this, you are more sure of your housing choice for next semester. If you have decided that living on campus is the perfect fit for you visit us online for 2011-2012 Housing Selection dates and information: www.simmons.edu/reslife

MEET STELLA

When you walk into Bartol dining hall, besides the wonderful food you may smell, you probably have noticed that familiar smiley face and dynamic personality. When she is not in Bartol she is keeping it live and exciting in Quadside Café until the wee hours of the night. That person would be Estella Cosby we all know as Stella. For the past seven and a half years we have been blessed her presence and energy.

The Southside Queen, New York native came to Boston eleven years ago and to Simmons College

seven and half years ago and she has taken the campus by storm since then. Stella also studied at Roxbury Community College. Stella can best be described as a jack of all trades in campus dining service on the residential campus. Stella enjoys working at Simmons because of all of the amazing people she gets to meet. “The different personalities, different cultures, religions, I get to learn from and see different people every day.”

When she isn’t working from sun up to sun down, which can be frequent, she enjoys spending time with her daughter

Jenese Love. She also likes watching horror flicks, though she can be afraid of the dark sometimes. But don’t let that fool you, she has a martial art background in Karate, “Don’t get it twisted I’ll kick your butt,” she says jokingly.

On those tough winter nights when she is working, 12+ hour days or a grave yard shift it can be tough but nevertheless she appreciates the love she receives from everyone. “I went from being a nerd and not many people knowing me to everyone knowing my name and loving me, it’s a hellava feeling.”

We’ve all had times where we just stare at that blank Microsoft Word document on our computer for what seems like hours. The blinking cursor appears mocking as we rack our brains to try and figure out what to write for the paper due next week. Perhaps we sit there in frustration for the next two hours or we procrastinate and decide to do something else to take our minds off the fact that we have no idea where to begin. Next time this happens to you, make an appointment at the Writing Center! Located in Beatley Library, the Writing Center employs a great number of experienced and trained tutors that can help you. Whether you are having trouble getting started, uncertain of proper citations, or challenged by grammar these tutors can assist you in whatever your writing concerns are through one on one

consultation. Additionally, you can even work with a tutor who specializes in your area of study. There are both undergraduate and graduate tutors available who have expertise in writing papers for numerous academic disciplines from nursing to library science. You can either just drop-by with a quick question or make an appointment. It’s easy to make an appointment as all you have to do is sign-up using the online form through the Writing Center website. You can also either come by in person or call 617-521-2479. If you don’t have the time to come to an appointment in person, instead you can take advantage of the online tutoring option. All you have to do is submit your paper through the online tutor request form located on the Writing Center website and a tutor will email you back feedback on your work. With all these options available to you, there’s no reason why should you ever sit for hours looking at a black computer screen again!

Ryles Jazz Club, Inman Squarehttp://www.rylesjazz.com/

The peanut butter and jelly for great music, Ryles has a ground floor of top-notch jazz and a second floor of salsa, Merengue, swing, and more. Enjoy a great meal, listen to some of the most popular jazz music in Boston, then go upstairs to bust a move better than Will Schuester from Glee. There are dance instructors offering all kinds of lessons, and the shows/music changes every night. A must-do for any Boston resident.

Havana Club, Central Squarehttp://havanaclubsalsa.com/

After the free 9-10 pm lessons, the Havana Club turns into a giant salsa dance party. The clientèle are there to dance and have fun, which makes the Havana Club a great place to learn the moves and make new friends. The space is quite large and well-ventilated, a feature that seems insignificant until you've been twirling and jiving for a couple hours (which will fly by faster than a cantante calls out steps in salsa rueda!). 21+ only

The Dance Complex, Central Squarewww.dancecomplex.org/

Perhaps you just want a dance lesson. Or you've been looking for Afro-Jazz. Or you are interested in seeing a debut of new lyrical physical theater. The Dance Complex offers very inexpensive lessons in a wide variety of dance forms, from ballet to hip-hop. There are regular performances of new works, and often you will see dance instructors offer their students the opportunity to perform in these shows. Located in an old bank, the Dance Complex also allows individuals to rent the beautiful rooms for any kind of activity, whether it's for yoga or martial arts. Fun fact- 2011 is the 20th anniversary of the Dance Complex!

Matt Nathanson comes to campus!

• • •If you haven’t heard the buzz yet, Matt Nathanson will joining us here at Simmons on April 9th at 8:00pm for a first-ever large scale concert in Holmes Sports Center! The idea of a large concert here at Simmons was brought up as a suggestion of something students would like to see at a Student Government Association meeting in the Fall semester. Since that time, the Office of Student Leadership and Activities (OSLA) and members of the Campus Activities Board (CAB) have been researching all of the costs associated with a production of this size and considering artist that would fit both the price range and the interest of Simmons students. In late February a survey was sent out to the Simmons undergrad community to vote on the final five choices: Travie McCoy, Matt Nathanson, Augustana, Parachute, and The Bravery. Based on over 500 votes from Simmons students and the availability of the artist, Matt Nathanson was confirmed to perform here at Simmons. The entire show will be student produced through the help of Simmons students who will start at noon loading in staging and equipment for the show, serving as additional security during the show, and rolling up their sleeves after the show late into the night helping to load everything back out of the building. If you are interested in being a member of the Concert Team please contact Tia Miller, Campus Life Coordinator at [email protected].

Socially Just Simmons!

On February 23rd, 1962 Simmons took part in a Peace Walk to protest the President in the resumption of nuclear testing.̆In the same newspaper there was an article evaluating the Peace Corps and their travels to St. Lucia and Ghana.

On March 1st, 1962 the student paper wrote an article on a Simmons student who was arrested for a Civil Rights sit-in demonstration in Maryland.

On March 20th, 1962 Malcolm X came to speak at Simmons College in Alumnae Hall about the Black Muslim Movement.

On April 5th, 1962 the student paper dedicated their paper to focus on Civil Rights.

What are you doing to be a global citizen? How are you helping those in yourcommunity? Take a moment to help others this month and make a difference!

For those of you who want to experience what promises to be an amazing show, tickets went on sale starting March 23rd, 4:00pm-7:00pm in the OSLA Box Office. 1 ticket per Simmons ID, open to Undergrad and Grad Students, Faculty, and Staff. Ticket are $15. First-come, First-served. After March 23rd, remaining tickets will be sold from OSLA Monday - Friday 9:30am - 4:30pm. If you have any questions please contact [email protected], 617-521-2423.

Residence Housing Association:

Tradition Starts Here

• • •by John O’Connor

Campus Life Coordinator & RD North & South Halls

If there was one thing that I learned about Simmons College soon after starting here it is that traditions are important here and they play an exciting part in adding to the campus vibrancy. Residence halls decorated for Halloween and as a haunted house, students performing songs as a part of the “Simmons Idol” competition, decorating residence halls for the illumination celebration engaged the hall councils for each building in participating in a tradition for Simmons as well as providing a fun and dynamic events for residents on campus. Residence  Housing Association(RHA) works to provide campus wide traditions and programming as each individual hall council provides programming in their own building. In the past campus traditions were coordinated by the President’s Council made up of the president from each hall council. Three years ago the Residence Housing Association was formed to help plan and execute these hall traditions and provide a leadership opportunities to a group of students interested in helping with campus traditions. RHA has been working hard to bring more vibrancy to campus. A new addition to their calendar this year RHA has introduced “Bartol Fun Wednesdays” where they pick a few Wednesdays in a semester and have a fun novelty event in Bartol Hall. The first such event was “Rice Necklaces” on March 2nd. It was a great event and many students got their name put on a grain of rice! If you missed this one don’t worry! There is another opportunity coming up soon.

In tune with the Gospel

Choirby Tia Miller

Campus Life Coordinator & RD Simmons Hall

• • •As most of you know we have several groups here on campus that gives Simmons students the opportunity to express their selves artistically through singing. The Simmons and Wheelock Gospel Choir is just one of those many those groups. The Gospel Choir has experienced some tremendous growth this year in the number of members and had some other great additions as well. The choir is made up of approximately twenty-six members from both Simmons and Wheelock and a newly added pair of directors who are students at Berklee College of Music. The group is lead by President and Senior Erin McGinley who has committed herself to helping the group get back on the right track for years to come. Being a young club or organization on campus as Gospel Choir is this something that the members know they have to work hard on to maintain. The addition of the two student directors has

given the group that sense of direction this year and has enhanced their performances immensely. Unlike most musical groups; gospel choirs typically learn music not from sheet music, but instead by ear so having a director to lead and call out during a performance has made all the difference for the choir this year.

The group meets every week to practice and learn new songs that members of the group will bring forward and present to the group to learn. The Gospel Choir has had the opportunity to perform at countless events this year both on

and off campus from the Student Showcase during Family Weekend, Festival of Lights, The COF Martin Luther King Breakfast, at the Cambridge SDA Church in Medford, and most recently at Brown University. If you have not yet had the opportunity to hear these wonderful folks perform I suggest you make plans to see them at one of their scheduled performances this semester at “A Sparkling Affair” on May 1st and at the re-scheduled “The Clothesline Project” on April 19th. I know personally their rendition of “Souled Out” always puts a smile on my face.

March is National Nutrition Month. The American Dietetic Association encourages everyone to eat a variety of nutritious foods at every meal through this year’s theme “Eat Right with Color.” Different color foods supply their own unique combination of the vitamins and minerals you need to stay healthy.Bartol Hall will be celebrating National Nutrition Month with five “Eat Right with Color” Days. Use this fruit and vegetable color guide to paint you plate during the “Eat Right with Color” Days and all month long:

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables is a great way to “Eat Right with Color” but don’t forget the colorful varieties of lean meats and fish, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

Here are some tips for “Eating Right with Color” everyday:• Add fruit to your whole grain breakfast cereal• Add dark leafy greens and tomatoes to your sandwich at lunch• Topped grilled chicken with salsa• Try these colorful snacks : wholegrain crackers and low-fat cheese, veggie sticks and low-
