UnderstandingEnrollmentRequisites

Enrollmentrequisitesareessentiallyrequirementsthatcanbeassignedtocourses,whichstudentsmustmeet

inordertoenroll. Theserequisitescanbedefinedintwoways: Asconditionsthatstudentsmustmeetatthe

timeofenrollmentorascoursesthatstudentsmusthavecompleted(orbeenrolledin)atthetimeof

enrollment.

Conditions

Oneofthemostbasictypesofrequisitesthatcanbeassignedtoacourseisaconditionthatastudentmustmeetatthe

timeofenrollment,inordertobeallowedintothecourse. Itispossibletohavemorethanoneconditionassignedtoa

course. Thefollowingdescribestheconditionsthatcanberequestedtobeaddedtothecoursesfromyouracademic

area:

AcademicLevel: Indicateanyrestrictionsonenrollmentincourses,basedontheAcademicLevel(i.e.freshman,senior)

ofthestudent. ThesystemusestheProjectedAcademicLevelofthestudentatthestartoftheterminitsanalysisof

whetherthestudentmeetsthecondition. TheProjectedAcademicLevelisdeterminedbasedonthestudents

cumulativecreditswithintheiracademiccareer,includingallinprogressunitsfrompreviousterms. (Moreinformation

regardingInProgresscourseworkonpage2.)

Example1: OnlystudentswhoseacademiclevelisequaltoSeniorcanenrollinthecourse. Example2: OnlystudentswhoseacademiclevelisgreaterthanFreshmancanenrollinthecourse.

AcademicProgram: Indicateaspecificacademicprograminwhichthestudentmustbeactiveinordertobeallowed

intoacourse.

Example: OnlyundergraduateArts&Sciences(UAS)studentscanenrollinthecourse.AcademicPlan: Indicateaspecificacademicplaninwhichthestudentmustbeactiveinordertobeallowedintoa

course. Academicplansincludemajors,minors,andcertificates. (Note:Ifyouindicatethatastudentmustbeina

specificplan,youdonotneedtoincludeaprogramcondition.)

Example: OnlyBiologicalSciences(BIOSCBS)majorscanenrollinthecourse.Academic

CumulativeGradePointAverage: Indicateanyrestrictionsoncourseenrollmentbasedonthestudentscumulative

gradepointaverage. PleaseindicateGPAvaluesinincrementsnosmallerthan0.25(i.e.2.00,2.25,2.5,2.75etc)

Example: ThestudentsoverallGPAmustbegreaterthan2.0inordertoenrollinthecourse.

Therearetwodifferenttypesofcourserequisites:

PreRequisite: Aprerequisiteissomethingthatastudentmustcomplete(orbeenrolledinforapreviousterm)before

thestartdateofthedesiredclass. Bydefault,thesystemwillincludeanyInProgresscoursesfromaprevioustermas

meetingtherequisite. (MoreinformationregardingInProgresscourseworkonpage2.)

CoRequisite: Acorequisiteissomethingthatastudentcancompletepriorto,oratthesametimeas,thedesiredclass.

Thismeansthatifonecourseisacorequisitetoanother,studentscanenrollinbothcourses,simultaneously,withinthe

sametermorcouldhavealreadycompletedthecourseinapreviousterm,tomeettherequisite.

Themostcommontypesofenrollmentrequisiteswillbespecificcourses(orgroupsofcourses)thatstudentsmusthave

completed(orbeenrolledin)toenrollinanothercourse. TheuseofthelogicalconnectorsANDandORcanbeused

betweenmultiplecoursestocreatemorecomplicatedtypesofrequisites.

Example1: CompleteMATH0010inordertoenrollinMATH0031. Example2: CompletebothMATH0010ANDMATH0020(inordertoenrollinMATH0031). Example3: CompleteeitherMATH0010ORMATH0020(inordertoenrollinMATH0031).

Youcan

also

specify

arange

of

courses

as

an

enrollment

requisite,

based

upon

subject

area

and

catalog

number.

For

example,wildcardcourseofEnglish1###,wheretherangestartsatanyfourdigitEnglishcoursebeginningwith1.

Example1: Completeany1000levelEnglishcourseinordertoenrollinENGLIT1350.OPTIONALREQUISITEPARAMETERMinimumGradeinCourse: Indicatetheminimumgradethatstudentsmustearninacourseforittobeusedtosatisfy

therequisite. (Note: Transfer/Test/OthercreditisconsideredaCgrade.) Itisimportanttounderstandthatthe

systemincludesastudent'sinprogressworkascountingtowardtheminimum. Onlywhenthestudentreceivesa

gradebelowthisminimumvaluewilltheynotmeettherequisite. (SeesectionbelowonInProgressCredit.) Also

indicatewhethertheminimumgradevalueappliestospecificcoursesinthelistofrequisites,orallcoursesthatmakeup

therequisite.

Example1: CompleteMATH0010withaminimumgradeofCorhigher(inordertoenrollinMATH0031). Example2: CompleteMATH0010andMATH0020withaminimumgradeofCineachcourse(inorderto

enrollinMATH0031).

IMPORTANTINFORMATIONREGARDINGREQUISITES

InProgressCredit: Thesystemwillincludeinanalysisandcountanynongradedcourses,aswellasanygradedcourses

thatareconsideredinprogress(i.e.GandIgrades). Acourseisconsideredinprogressassoonasyouenroll. Ifyour

academicareawantstoexcludeinprogresscourseworkasmeetingrequisites,pleaseindicateintheSpecialInstructions

boxontheform. Itisimportanttounderstandthatifyoudecidetoexcludeinprogresscoursework,studentswillnot

meet

the

requisite

until

an

official

grade

is

posted.

Transfer,Test,andOtherCredit: ThesystemdefaultstoallowTransfer,Test,andOtherCredittomeetrequisites

(whereapplicable). Iftransfer,test,and/orothercreditshouldnotbeusedtomeetrequisites,pleaseindicateinthe

SpecialInstructionsboxontheform.

Department/InstructorConsentvs.Requisites: TheOfficeoftheUniversityRegistrarplacesconsentonthecourse

catalogforthesis/dissertation,directedstudy,andindependentstudycourses. Thedistinctionbetweendepartment

consentandrequisitesisthatarequisitepreventsindividualswhohavenotmettheminimumrequirementsfrom

enteringtheclass;consentrequiresthatallstudentsreceivepermissionfromthedepartmenttoenterintothecourse

Requisitesshouldnotbeplacedoncoursesthatalreadyrequiredepartment/instructorconsent,sincethepermission

willoverride

the

requisite.

RequisitesareforGradedComponentsOnly: Requisitescannotbeplacedonnongradedlabsandrecitations.

The95%Rule: Inselfenrollment,studentswillneedapermissionnumbertogetintoaclassinwhichtheydonot

meettherequisite. Usediscretionwhendefiningrequisitesinyourarea;ageneralguidelinehasbeenestablishedthat

requisitesshouldonlybeplacedoncourseswhen95%ofyourstudentswhoentertheclassescandosowithout

requiringapermissionnumber.

11. Definetheprerequisiteruleinthespaceprovided.

Example1: CompletebothMATH0010andMATH0020,orcompleteMATH0031. Thestudentmusteithercomplete

(using

the

MATH

newrequisiteruleinthespaceprovidedinsection#14.

14. Definethecorequisiteruleinthespaceprovided. Thesamemethodofdefiningtheprerequisitesshould

beusedtodefinecorequisites,excepttheruleshouldbewrittenundersection#14.

15. Enteranyspecialinstructions,suchastheMinimumGradestudentsmustearninacorequisitecourse

(seethedefinitionoftheMinimumGradeparameteronpage2). Anyotheruniqueorspecialrulesfor

completingtherequisitecourseworkshouldbelistedinthespaceprovided.

WhattoAvoidWhenDefiningtheRequisiteRules

Example1: SupposewearedefiningtheprerequisitetoGERMAN0004;studentsmustcompleteGERMAN0003beforeenrollinginGERMAN0004. IfGERMAN0003alreadyhasaprerequisiteofGERMAN0002,thereisnoneedto

indicatethatbothGERMAN0002andGERMAN0003areprerequisitestoGERMAN0004.

Example2: AvoidlistingacourseasbothaprerequisiteANDacorequisite. Rememberthatwhileacorequisitecanbetakenatthesametimeasthecoursethatitisassociatedwith,itcouldalsohavebeencompletedinapreviousterm

andstillmeettherequisite.

REGIONALEQUIVALENCIES

Youmayincluderegionalcampuscourseequivalenciesinthelistingofcoursesthatcanbeusedasrequisites. Keepin

mindthatyouonlyneedtolisttheregionalcampuscourseifithasadifferentSUBJECT/CATALOGNUMBERthanthe

Pittsburghcampus

course.

Example1: Here,inadditiontolistingBIOSC0150,0715,AND0190(thePittsburghcampusequivalentof

BIOLOGY1,theyalsoincludetheregionalequivalencybylistingBIOSC0170,BIOL0101,andBIOL0110.

Example2: ThisisamorecomplicatedexampleofhowtolistbothPittsburghcampuscourses,aswellas
