The Foreign-Educated Physicians Combined BSN/MSN Program
The Combined BSN/MSN track is a pathway for foreign-educated physicians (FEPs) from culturally
diverse backgrounds to have the opportunity to:
• Obtain a Bachelors of Nursing (BSN) degree
• Become a Registered Nurse (RN)
• Attain the Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree
• Be eligible to take the Advanced Registered Nurse Practice (ARNP) national certification exam
The Combined BSN/MSN track is an accelerated program that builds upon the knowledge and skills of the
social and physical sciences from a prior BS degree. It is comprised of 63 upper division credits and 43-47
graduate credits, totaling 102 to 106 credit hours. Admission to the MSN component is contingent upon
meeting the MSN admission requirements.
Admission requirements for the undergraduate portion of the BSN/MSN track, students must:
Must be a United States Citizen or Resident
Physicians who have completed a medical degree from a regionally accredited non-US University
Have transcripts evaluated with grade point average (GPA) by a company who is a member of NACES;
www.naces.org University Undergraduate Admissions GPA (Minimum of 2.0.)
Obtain a TOEFL score of 550 or iBT of 80; IELTS score of 6.5, Requirement waived if previously
completed High School Diploma, Bachelor or Master’s Degree from an English speaking country; or have
completed the first two freshman English classes with a “C” or better, (test scores are good for two years)
Successfully complete application process to FIU at admissions.fiu.edu
Take the ATI TEAS nursing entrance exam Score a minimum of 70% overall and 62% in science
Complete three credit hours each for the following nursing prerequisites within the last 10 years
with a “C” or better: ᴑ Statistics; ᴑ Human Nutrition; ᴑ Human Growth & Development
To advance to the MSN component of this track, (Semesters V-VIII), students must:
1. Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above for Semesters I - V
2. Pass National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) with the first attempt by the end
of Semester V
3. Submit graduate application to the FIU Graduate School by the appropriate deadline during Semester V
BSN Stop-out Option:
Students with less than a 3.5 GPA for Semesters I through V, or who fail to pass NCLEX in prescribed
time, will take NUR 4945L (Senior Clinical Practicum, 4 credits) in Semester V. BSN degree will be
awarded at the end of Semester V or Semester VI depending on availability of NUR 4945L.
Current Nurse Practitioner Tracks: 1) Pediatric 2) Family 3) Adult/Geriatric & 4) Psychiatric
(Applicants will have the opportunity to rank their interest in the available tracks, but final placement will be
evaluated by the admissions committee and are also limited to the available seats)
All students must have a majority of ARNP preceptors in all Nurse Practitioner practicum courses.

How to Apply to the Foreign Educated Physician BSN/MSN Program
STEP 1 – Contact the FEP BSN/MSN Office
• Contact the Admissions Representative Professor Griffin, 305-919-4421, [email protected] for information
• Only United States Citizens or Residents will be admitted
• Have your medical college send your original transcript to a member of the National Association of
Credential Evaluation Services (NACES.org for member list). (Example: World Education Services -
Request for translation, U.S. equivalency evaluation of educational credentials, a course-by-course
evaluation, showing credit hours, grades, and grade point average (GPA). GPA of 2.0 or above required
• Scan and email or bring copies of all transcripts (from all US schools & your medical school transcript) at
your advisement appointment or the information session. Our staff will review your transcripts to
determine program eligibility and prerequisite completion.
• Applicants who already have an RN License in the U.S. are NOT eligible to apply to this program.
STEP 2 - Apply to FIU ~ To receive your Panther identification number PID # (FIU student number)
• Go to http://admissions.fiu.edu to complete an undergraduate application to FIU for admission to the
upcoming FALL SEMESTER, then select “apply for undergraduate” and then select “transfer
applicants” and fill out that application. [Campus: BBC campus] [ Major: Nursing › FEP BSN] Select
any alternate Major. Select “Second Bachelor’s Degree” as level of study, applying as a Junior. You
will receive your student number ~ PID # within three business days of submitting your application.
• Request that the evaluating company send your completed official evaluation with a copy of the original
transcript in the original language & translation to FIU Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

• Send official transcripts from all schools attended (including copy of original international
transcript in original language & official evaluation sent directly from the evaluation agency) to:

STEP 3 - Complete Prerequisites ~ from a regionally accredited college or university
• Complete all Nursing prerequisites with a grade of “C” or better
Statistics ~ 3 credit hours
Human Nutrition ~ 3 credit hours
Human Growth & Development or Developmental Psychology ~ 3 credit hours
• If you have never taken an online class, it is suggested that at least one prerequisite be taken
online (two would be better).
NOTE: Prerequisites must be completed by the end of the Spring semester (and must be taken within the last 10 years), prior to Fall semester admission.

STEP 4 - Take FEP Nursing Entrance Exams ~
(IELTS is also accepted with a score of 6.5 or above)
The TOEFL & TEAS exams can be taken at the FIU English Language Institute or a regionally
accredited college or university testing center or PSI testing center.
Have scores sent to FIU. Scores are good for two years.

STEP 5 - Apply to FEP BSN/MSN Program:

The Completed Packet will include: (Check-Off List)
FEP BSN/MSN Program Application (found at the end of the information packet)
1st Essay ~ tell a little about yourself, where you came from, how you got here, and why you want to
be in the FEP program. [One page, single spaced, Times New Roman or Arial Narrow, 12 pt.]
Supporting Documentation (USMLE exams completed, US College Degrees awarded, licenses,
certificates, reference letters, etc.)
Official transcripts in sealed envelopes including evaluated international medical transcripts
with GPA, every U.S. College, University, or professional school attended. If official transcripts
have been sent to FIU, include an unofficial copy with “Sent to FIU” written in pencil on the
bottom of the transcript
Unofficial TOEFL test scores (Official scores to be sent to FIU)
Unofficial TEAS test scores (Official scores to be sent to FIU)
Proof of Residency or Citizenship (copy of: Green card/ Passport or Citizenship papers)

• All qualified candidates will participate in a personal interview with the FEP Combined BSN/MSN
Program Admissions Committee. Interviewees WILL be required to give their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, &
4th choice for the Nurse Practitioner tracks. (Pediatric, Family, Adult/Geriatric & Psychiatric )
• Applicants will be notified of the committee’s admission decision after the conclusion of all
interviews and final review of all documentation.
• Applicants who previously applied, but were not accepted for admission to the program must
resubmit a new application packet in order to be considered for the next academic year.

AFTER Being Accepted into the FEP Program The immunizations below will be required with a background check through American Data Bank:
Immunization Policy: As a prerequisite to registration, Florida International University requires all students to comply with the following immunization policy regulations from the Florida Board of Governors regarding measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis and hepatitis B immunity:
1. Measles. Mumps, Rubella: All students born after December 31, 1956 must present documented proof of immunity to measles (Rubeola) and
German measles (Rubella), as described below: Acceptable Proof of Immunity consists of: 1. Proof of two (2) vaccinations {doses) of MMR (Measles/Mumps/Rubella) received at least 28 days apart or two doses of measles and one Rubella o Vaccinations must have been received after your first birthday o Vaccinations must have been received in 1969 or later 2. Proof of immunity by way of a blood test lab result (Measles and Rubella Titer) 3. A written statement from a healthcare provider documenting a diagnosis of measles (Rubeola). Must include date of diagnosis, be signed by the healthcare provider and be on his/her official stationery. This is acceptable for measles only and does not apply to Rubella Exemptions: You will be exempt from the pre-registration immunization requirement for measles, mumps, and rubella, only if you meet any one of the following three criteria: 1. You were born before January 1, 1957. 2. Medical Exemption: To claim a medical exemption, you must produce a letter from a healthcare provider, signed on his/her stationery, stating the medical reason(s) why you are not able to receive the measles and/or Rubella vaccine(s) and for how long -a permanent or temporary medical condition warranting exemption. 3. Religious Exemption: For details on how to claim religious exemption, please contact Student Health Services. To prevent delays in your ability to register for your classes, all of the above documents requesting medical or religious exemptions must be received by the University Health Services at least four weeks prior to registration. Temporary Deferments: Temporary deferments are acceptable for the following conditions: 1. Documented pregnancy or fertility treatment 2. Documentation of breastfeeding 3. Documented illness
Deferment status requests must be submitted to the University Health Services at least four weeks prior to registration and the request must be signed by a healthcare provider and be on his/her official stationery.
2. Meningitis and Hepatitis B All students must present documented proof of vaccination/immunity to meningococcal meningitis and hepatitis B as described below: Acceptable Proof of Immunity consists of: a. Proof of one dose of meningitis vaccine total of three doses of hepatitis B vaccines b. Proof of immunity by way of a blood test lab result (applicable to hepatitis B only) c. A written statement from a healthcare provider documenting a diagnosis of hepatitis B. Must include date of diagnosis, be signed by the healthcare provider and be on his/her official stationery.
