November—Looking Back, Looking Forward. The month of November is sprinkled with liturgies and rituals in remembrance of our beloved dead. At these gatherings neighbours and friends take time to share in prayer; to share in loss, and hope.We are taught in our Catholic faith that at death life is changed, it is not ended. At the heart of this teaching is the encouragement to look ahead, to look forward, to believe in more … to discover everything that Jesus is. When we pray Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine, we ask God to help us know the promise of Jesus!. This prayer accepts that a life is over, someone we love has died, yet declares there is more … because Jesus died too! November, with its various rituals, seeks to lift us up in our journey of loss, because as people we need hope. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus gives us that hope. (Intercom) During this November all our parishioners are invited to visit the Shrine in our Church and;- ‘write a name’, light a candle’, ‘say a prayer’. Recently Deceased: We commend to the fullness of eternal life the soul of Teresa Curtis, who died in Canada. Anniversary Prayers: We remember of our prayers this weekend Margaret Sutton, The Maudlins. Baptisms:

The Reading from Maccabees is an abridged version of the account of the martyrdom of a mother and her seven sons. It emphasises both the conviction of the mother and sons to adhere to the tenets of their faith and it alludes to the theme of resurrection. The scene is set during the Jewish revolt against the Seleucid king, Antiochus, and the restoration of the Temple about two hundred years before the birth of Christ.

These are the first words of the letter from St Paul to a community he helped to found. These are good and kind sentiments; words of encourage-ment which Paul wants to convey. It is interesting that he mentions ‘work’ and ‘word’. Our Christian faith is not just something to be spoken about, but something lived in the day to day building up of the Body of Christ. The mention of the Lord in the final sentence seems to allude to the Holy Spirit pointing the Thessalonians to the Father and the Son.

The mention of ‘seven’ goes back to the first reading and to resurrection. Sadducees did not believe in resurrec-tion and the Pharisees did. The reading is not necessarily about resurrection but rather the constant barrage that Jesus had to endure in the hopes that these learned people might trick him or trip him up. However, which of us hasn’t pondered over questions and conundrums such as these from time to time, especially at the death of people close to us and in particular at this time of year. Jesus settled their argument, but not perhaps in the way the Sadducees would have liked. He explains the resurrection and affirms our belief in a God, not of the dead but of the living.
