WELCOME

Each year on All Souls’ Day the Church prays for all the faithful departed, those who await that day when they will join the

company of all the saints. This feast reminds us all that even after death, we are linked with our loved ones and

fellow-travelers in an unbroken line of faith, hope and love. All Souls’ Day gives us the opportunity to strengthen that bond,

to remember those who have died, and to inspire and strengthen one another as the community of believers still here on

earth.

For today’s Celebration of the Eucharist, the choir will sing nearly all parts of the Mass by itself—a practice common for

centuries, but rare today. Mass compositions, like that of the seventeenth century Portuguese composer Duarte Lobo,

which we have incorporated into today’s Liturgy, reflect a time and a practice when the entirety of the Mass’ prayers were

the charge of the clergy, servers, and where the faithful were represented by the choir and sang all their parts. Although this

is not common practice today, the Feast of All Souls is a particular occasion that allows us to savor the magnificent music of

the Requiem by Duarte Lobo within the context of the modern Eucharistic Liturgy (Novus Ordo).

But even if we will not sing as much as we usually do in our Sunday Masses, it does not mean we are not fully and actively

participating. As Saint John Paul II once pointed out: “Active participation does not preclude the active passivity of silence,

stillness and listening: indeed, it demands it. Worshippers are not passive, for instance, when listening to the readings or the

homily, or following the prayers of the celebrant, and the chants and music of the liturgy. These are experiences of silence

and stillness, but they are in their own way profoundly active.” (Address to Bishops of the United States during their Ad

Limina visit, November 7, 1998)

With the exception of the Liturgy of the Word, the Mass tonight will be celebrated in Latin, still the official and universal

language of the Church. The Second Vatican Council indicated that “the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the

Latin rites.” (Sacrosanctum Concilium, n. 36). We invite you to participate fully with the Latin responses which are included

in this Worship Aid.

We are grateful to everyone who have made today’s Requiem Mass possible by their generous donations in memory of their

loved ones.

Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine et lux perpetua luceat eis. Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion et tibi reddetur votum in Jerusalem. Exaudi orationem meam ad te omnis caro veniet.

Grant eternal rest to them, Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them. A hymn befits you, God in Zion, and a vow to you shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem. Hear my prayer, for unto you all flesh shall come.

In nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. ℟ Amen.

Pax vobis. ℟ Et cum spiritu tuo.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. ℟ Amen.

Peace be with you. ℟ And with your spirit.

Fratres, agnoscámus peccáta nostra, ut apti simus sacra mystéria celebránda.

Miserere nostri, Domine. ℟ Quia peccavimus tibi. Ostende nobis, Domine, misericordiam tuam. ℟ Et salutare tuum da nobis.

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

Have mercy on us, O Lord. ℟ For we have sinned against you. Show us, O Lord, your mercy. ℟ And grant us your salvation.

Kyrie eleison. Christe eleison. Kyrie eleison.

Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.

Preces nostras, quǽsumus, Dómine, benígnus exáudi, ut, dum attóllitur nostra fides in Fílio tuo mórtuis suscitáto, in famulórum tuórum prǽstolánda resuuectióne spes quoque nostra firmétur. Per Dóminum nostrum Iesum Christum Fílium tuum, qui tecum vivit et regnet in unitáte Spíritus Sancti, Deus, per ómnia sǽcula sǽculórum. ℟ Amen.

Listen kindly to our prayers, O Lord, and, as our faith in your Son, raised from the dead, is deepened, so may our hope of resurrection for your departed servants also find new strength. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ℟ Amen.

MYSTERY OF FAITH

DOXOLOGY

Liturgy of the Eucharist

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, deliver the souls of all the departed faithful from the sufferings of hell and from the deep pit; deliver them from the mouth of the lion, may they not be swallowed up by hell, may they not fall into darkness.

We offer our sacrifices and our prayers to you, 0 Lord; receive them for the souls that we are remembering today; O Lord. Make them pass from death into life, as you promised long ago to Abraham and his descendants.

Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

℟ May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Dominus vobíscum. ℟ Et cum spíritu tuo.

Sursum corda. ℟ Habémus ad Dóminum.

Grátias agámus Dómino Deo nostro. ℟ Dignum et iustum est.

The Lord be with you. ℟ And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts. ℟ We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. ℟ It is right and just.

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus Deus Sabaoth Pleni sunt coeli et terra gloria tua Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis.

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Mortem tuam annuntiamus, Domine, et tuam resurrectionem confitemur, donec venias.

We proclaim your death, O Lord, And profess your resurrection, until you come again.

SIGN OF PEACE

Prǽcéptis salutáribus móniti, et divína institutióne formáti, audémus dícere:

At the Savior’s command, and informed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Dómine Iesu Christe, qui dixísti Apóstolis tuis: Pacem relínquo vobis, pacem meam do vobis: ne respícias peccáta nostra, sed fidem Ecclésiǽ tuǽ; eámque secúndum voluntátem tuam pacificáre et coadunáre dignéris. Qui vivis et regnas in sǽcula sǽculórum. Amen. Pax Dómini sit smper vobíscum. ℟ Et cum spíritu tuo.

Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church; and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. ℟ And with your spirit.
