HURRIED DECISIONSir, Last week’s cover article ‘Learning amid fear’ made for aninteresting read. Being a teacher, I must say that teaching isnot an easy task with a face mask on. It is always difficult tobreathe properly and speak loudly while taking classes.Classroom teaching has its own advantages. Having said that, Istill think it could have been delayed a bit as the vaccinationprocess is yet to be completed.

E very year, ahead of theRepub l i c Day orIndependence Day, the nation
pays tributes to those brave men andwomen who had made the supreme sacrificesfor a free India. It is a matter of pride that weare now an independent, strong and self-sufficientnation that our predecessors dreamt of.
But are we really a free nation? Have we got freedomfrom issues such as superstitions, drug abuse, atrocitiesagainst women and many other taboos? The list is endless.
The British have certainly gone, but today’s ‘freedomfighters’ still wage a war, which is tougher than the one thatwas fought decades back. They fight the enemies within.
Ahead of the Republic Day, Sunday POST lists a fewwarriors who, away from the media glare, are trying to bringindependence in true sense.

Patel’sstory is

lievable and uplifting at the same time. Thosewho had come back from the brink of destitution
and death due to their fatal habit have foundsuccour and sustenance at Samarpan, his rehab centre.
Prabhu’s efforts to help recover drug addicts and drugdependence are exemplary in a society permeated by selfishnessand ego. Without exaggeration it can be said that the 52-year-old has emerged as a messiah for drug addicts and al-coholics.
Like other addicts, Patel, an alcoholic, could not controlhimself despite some effort. By the time he completed hisgraduation from Hindu College of Delhi University, drinkinghad become a way of life for him. Following his graduationin 1989, he joined the University Law Center (LawFaculty) and completed LLB in 1992. Alcoholintake just kept increasing. He has spent around22 years of his life in Delhi, practiced lawfor around three years in Delhi.
In July 1995 he left for the USAfor his LLM degree. His habit hadalready taken an extreme turn andhe could barely function withoutalcohol. As a result he stoppedgoing to law school and stoppedappearing for exams. He was fi-nancially and morally bankrupt,a long-standing relationship hadcome to an end and his health,
both physical and mental, wasdeteriorating. He was con-
suming 32 to 36 cans ofbeer every day. He was
s ick of dr ink ing butcouldn’t stop.
However, one of his oldfriends got him connectedwith the National Instituteof Alcoholism and AlcoholAbuse of the National
Institutes of Health (NIH)in Bethesda, Maryland. “I called
them and after a series of telephonicinterviews they agreed to induct me for free
treatment there. After that there was no looking back. Sincethen, I haven’t had a drink,” says Patel.
Asked about the de-addiction activities, he continues: “Wehave a number of successes to our credit and it’s extremelyheartwarming to see an alcoholic or addicts get back tonormal family life once again. I feel proud to see peoplewho used to be alcoholics once and now have run rehabcentres after being counseled by me. My work with alcoholismand addiction also led to my working on issues related toHIV and AIDS.”
Today Patel is a national level resource person / facilitator/ trainer on HIV and AIDS issues including counseling.
Nargis BahaarFor more than two decades,
Kakatpur-based Nargis Bahaar hasbeen waging a battle to stop
atrocities against women.She has rescued many vic-
tims of domestic violenceand girls ensnared bytraffickers.
“You don’t need tobe physically strongto fight for the causeof women. All youneed is to raise yourvoice to stop atrocities
against women,” saysNargis who has been
fighting for the rights ofwomen since 1998. She has
resolved more than 3,000 do-mestic violence cases apart from
rescuing girls from being trafficked.Nargis believes that the mindset of
the people towards the girl child is yet tochange even as the world has seen a lot ofchanges in terms of scientific inventions and
technological advancement. Issues like rape, do-mestic violence, killing of female foetus and bride
burning are what made her take up the cause ofwomen, she adds.

atrocities against women

Born in a Muslim household, it was noteasy for Nargish to fight for the rights ofwomen. Recalling the initial days of herjourney, she says, “It was extremely difficultfor me to fight for women who were torturedby their in-laws and husbands. However, anincident in 1998 forced me to raise my voice.A woman named Malati (name changed), aneighbour, had been tortured by her in-lawsfor no reason. On the fateful day in 1998,she was found dead. Shocked at her death, Ireached her place instantly. I was even moreshocked to see her in-laws trying to bury thebody. I called a few other women of ourlocality and informed the police about theincident. When Malati’s in-laws said she dieddue to snakebite, I told the police the truth.I also staged a sit-in in front of the policestation as I sensed that the matter was beingcovered up. I demanded that the police searchfor injury marks on Malati’s body. Left withno option, the police investigated the matterand confirmed that she was beaten to deathby her in-laws. Since that day, I have beendoing my bit for women facing abuse besidestaking up other causes.”
She has also been instrumental in forming50 self-help groups (SHG) to empowerwomen.

time creating awareness about Olive Ridleyturtles and the marine ecosystem. The greencrusader has been into many activities for thelast eight years. He with the help of his teamcleans beaches, cycles to coastal villages tosensitise people of the fishery community andtheir children about the significance of OliveRidley turtles for ecology, conducts
workshops aimed atsea turtle conser-vation with seaturtle volun-teers of 25off-shorecamps indifferentcoastaldivi-
sions of Odisha. Besides, he interacts andtrains the turtle activists how to collect eggsfor artificial conservation, how to relocateeggs safely, how to prepare artificial nests andhow to realise the baby turtles in the ocean.
Hailing from Jahania, Soumya and hisfriend Dillip got themselves dressed in Ollymascot and cycled 800 km to reachGahiramatha, the major nesting siteof the turtles in Kendrapada dis-trict, while covering the coastalareas of Puri, Chilika,Gopalpur, Rushikulyariver mouth, Satakosia,Bhubaneswar, Cuttack,Siali and Paradip. Forthis journey, bothSoumya and Dilip en-tered the Limca Bookof Records for carryingout the ‘Longest CycleRide for Turtles’.
“The next generationneeds to take responsibilityand promote conservation,” saysSoumya who along with his fellowenvironmentalists cleared 15 tonnes of plasticwastes from various beaches of Odisha.
About half the world’s population of OliveRidleys comes to the Odisha coast for nesting,and to ensure the hatchlings make it back tothe sea safely, Soumya with his team has or-ganised 288 beach clean-up events.
“My village is near the sea where OliveRidleys used to come ashore to nest. Fed upwith the sights of dead turtles washed ashore,I decided to do my bit for their conservation.There is a lot of focus on the tiger but noone was paying attention to the marine ecosys-
tem,” says Soumya, who discontinuedhis B. Tech course to be closer
to the nesting zone..Apart from workingon turtle conservation,
he is into revivingmangrove vege-
tation and birdconservationfor the lasteight yearsand has madean amazingimpact at thegrassrootslevel.
Ghasiram PandaAlthough India has
laws to prevent child mar-riage, it is still rampant in
many parts of Odisha especiallyin tribal and backward communities
owing to lack of awareness and a host ofsocio-economic problems including abjectpoverty and a poor female literacy rate. AndGhasiram Panda, communication in-chargeat ActionAid, Odisha and an advisor to OdishaChild Right Commission, was instrumentalin popularising the concept of child marriagefree village and also instrumental in bringingthe Odisha Child Marriage Prohibition Rules2016 and the state strategy action plan toend child marriage by 2030.
Panda with the support of the localAnganwadi workers made Rugudipalivillage in Subarnapur as the firstchild marriage free village inJanuary 2020. Thanks to hisefforts, now more than 1,500villages have been declaredchild marriage free.
Panda filed a PIL inHigh Court seeking ef-fective implementationof Chi ld Marr i ageProhibition Act respondingto which a committee has beenformed to prevent the practice.With the Odisha State Commissionfor Protection of Child Rights, Pandaensures no child should sleep underthe open sky. As many as
500 children and their parents have been ben-efited by the project so far. He is managinga FB page ‘Say No to Child Marriage’ havingmore than 3.5k members across the globe.That apart, he has authored two books —Manaba Adkikarara Swara and AsumariSwapna. These books are on issues relatedhuman rights, right to education and endingchild marriages.
About his work, Panda says, “I am facilitatingin ending child marriage practices in 51 districtsof five different states such as Odisha, Jharkhand,West Bengal, Bihar and Rajasthan. In Odishawe have this programme in 15 districts. Inthe last two years with the support of UNICEFand district administrations we have successfullystopped 1,051 child marriages in 15 mostvulnerable districts of Odisha,” says Panda.

TIRANGA DHOKLA
n Idli batter: 4 cups
n Palak puree: 1 cup
n Ginger paste: 1 tsp
n Green chillies paste: 2-3
n Gun powder Idli molagai podi: 1 tbsp
n Everest Kashmirilal Chilli Powder: 1/2 tsp
n 1 small Ginger paste
n Cooking oil: 2 tsp
FOR GARNISHING
n Grated coconut: 4 tbsp
n Freshly chopped Coriander leaves
Ingredients Pour the batter in a big bowl, add salt, anddivide into 3 equal parts. For orange batter,
mix one portion of batter, gun powder and chillipowder. Leave aside one part for white batter.For green batter, mix the remaining third portionof batter, palak puree, ginger paste, green chillipaste and a pinch of salt. Now mix all the ingredi-ents mentioned for a green layer, stirring well.Keep good amount of water in a big vessel onhigh heat. Grease any flat steel plate and trans-fer the prepared green batter to a greased plateand steam it over the vessel of water. Whendone, pour white batter and steam. Then addthird layer, and steam. Dhokla will be done in 15minutes. Remove from heat and cool. Cut intodesired shapes and plate. Heat oil in a smallsaucepan and make the tempering of seasoningingredients. Pour the seasoning over Tirangadhokla and garnish with grated coconut andchopped coriander.
Procedure
TRICOLOUR BARFI
n Cashewnuts: 250 gms
n Almonds: 150 gms
n Sugar: 750 gms
n Ghee: 300 gms
n Milk: 1 cup
n Green cardamom powder: 10 pieces
n Saffron Powder: 1/4 tsp
n Green Colour Powder: 1/4 tsp
n Orange or Red Colour Powder: 1/4 tsp
Ingredients
Soak cashews and almonds separately for half anhour. Drain and peel almonds. Grind the nuts
together to form a thick paste. Add milk and sugar andgrind again. Split the paste into three equal parts. Mixthe red colouring to the first part. Add 1/3rd of the gheeand cardamom powder. Heat the paste in a pan and stiruntil it leaves the sides of the pan. Pour the paste into aghee coated plate and spread well. Add half of theremaining ghee and cardamom powder to the secondmix and repeat the same process. This paste willremain white in colour. Pour the paste when done overthe red paste and spread without mixing. Add greencolouring, remaining ghee and cardamom powder tothe third part. Prepare the paste with the same methodand pour over the second layer. Spread it evenly.Garnish with chopped almonds and cashew and allowto cool. Once cooled, cut into square or diamondshaped pieces.
