The Strawberry Hill Shell SeatThis seat is a recreation of the shell seat designed by Richard Bentley in the mid 18th century for Horace Walpole’s Strawberry Hill. The Shell Seat is hand made entirely from wood by craftsmen in England; using traditional skills it takes four hundred man hours to produce each one. We use over seven hundred English oak laminate strips, cross-plied over a large forma to create the shell. The seat of the seat is carved from solid oak and the arms are built up from small oak blocks, which are glued together and then carved to the scroll design that can be seen in the only representational 18th century drawing of the seat, by Richard Bentley. Lime wood has been used to carve the scroll of the shell under the seat and tulip wood has been employed for its flexibility to create

the shell rays.
