Flora of China Illustrations, Volume 22PoaceaeWu Zhengyi, P.H. Raven, & Hong Deyuan, eds.In English

This volume accompanies the text volume 22, which was published in 2006. Both volumes are devoted to just one plant family, the grasses (Poaceae or Gramineae), and no group of plants is of greater economic importance. The Poaceae range from the Asian bamboos within the tribe Bambuseae to the widely cultivated rice, wheat, barley, and maize or corn (ORZA, TRITICUM, HORDEUM, AND ZEA), as well as many grasses used for animal forage, all plants of unparalleled importance to human life. Nearly half of the species of grasses treated here (ca. 800 out of ca. 1,800), including many woody bamboos, are found only in China. A special introductory section describes and illustrates the structure of these plants to facilitate identification and provides a glossary of terminology.

In the late 1980s, Alwyn H. Gentry and Enrique Forero conceptualized the idea of local floristic inventories that would culminate in the publication of descriptive floras of areas previously selected in Amazonian Colombia and Peru. The project in the Reserva Cusco Amazónico (today called Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica) in the Madre de Dios region, culminated in the presentation of this work. The Flórula de la Reserva Ecológica Inkaterra compiles all currently known vascular species in the Reserve and nearby areas, such as Rolin Island, Concepción Field Station (ATI), and Lake Sandoval. The work consists of two main parts: the introduction and the descriptive flora, which includes 127 families, 593 genera, and 1,266 vascular plant species.

A Flora of the Liverworts and Hornworts of New Zealand, Volume 1Monogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard. 110J. J. Engel & D. GlennyIn English

A FLORA OF THE LIVERWORTS AND HORNWORTS OF NEW ZEALAND is an illustrated guide to an important component of New Zealand’s green plant flora, anticipated in three volumes. Volume 1 deals solely with leafy liverworts, as will Volume 2; Volume 3 will deal with the remainder of the leafy liverworts together with the thallose liverworts and the hornworts.

There are 595 species of liverworts and 13 hornwort species in 49 families and 157 genera that are currently accepted as occurring in the New Zealand region. Volume 1 provides keys and descriptions to 211 of the 595 liverwort species, and provides a key to all genera of the largest order, the JUNGERMANNIALES. Detailed notes are provided on distribution and habitat, and discussions under the family and genus descriptions place the New Zealand flora in the context of the world liverwort and hornwort flora. To complement the descriptions, 172 black-and-white plates illustrate details of many of the species and 101 color images illustrate almost all of the 60 genera in this volume. Volume 1 also includes a detailed Introduction, which presents a history of exploration of the New Zealand flora; provides a detailed overview of the region’s climate, geology, and vegetation; and includes a special contribution on endophytic fungi associates in New Zealand liverworts and their ecological and evolutionary significance.

When this three-volume flora is completed, it will be the first flora for these two groups of bryophytes since Hooker’s 1864–1867 HANDBOOK OF THE NEW ZEALAND FLORA.

The Ladyslipper and I, Autobiography of G. Ledyard StebbinsMonogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Garden 109G. L. Stebbins V. C. Hollowell, V.B. Smocovitis, & E. P. Duggan, eds.In English

THE LADYSLIPPER AND I is the autobiography of G. Ledyard Stebbins (1906-2000), widely regarded as one of the most influential evolutionary biologists of the twentieth century. His opus, VARIATION AND EVOLUTION IN PLANTS (1950), is perhaps the best known among his seven books and other major scientific contributions and provided the conceptual framework for the emerging field of plant evolutionary biology. Stebbins’ influence extended beyond botany, and with many colleagues he would fundamentally shape modern genetics and Darwin’s theory of natural selection toward what is now acknowledged as the modern evolutionary synthesis.

The stories Stebbins recounts here cover his first plant-collecting forays as a child in New England, friendships with other major figures in twentiety-century biology including Edgar Anderson and Ernst Mayr, his role in establishing the Department of Genetics at the University of California, Davis, his many treks in California, and more.

Manual of Grasses for North America M. Barkworth, L. Anderton, K. Capels, S. Long, & M. Piep, eds.In English

Considerable interest has been expressed in a compact treatment of the grasses of North America. This new manual adresses this interest. It includes all the illustrations, plus a few more, that are found in the two FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA grass volumes, but at a reduced size. Similarly, it includes updated versions of all the maps. The saving in space comes from eliminating the citations and species descriptions, using abbreviations in the descriptions of the other taxa, creating a single index, and in adopting a space- conserving design. The ecological notes have been retained, with some modification.

The taxonomic treatment in the Manual differs in few places from that in the FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA grass volumes. Both HOPIA and ZULOAGAEA are recognized, as are the three infraspecific taxa of PHRAGMITES. In addition, Finot’s treatment of TRISETUM has been adopted, with some modifications. Additional illustrations have been prepared to reflect these changes and to accommodate the additional taxa of SPOROBOLUS, ERAGROSTIS, and RYTIDOSPERMA that have been found in the U.S. since publication of FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA volumes 24 and 25.

Monocots, Comparative Biology and Evolution, PoalesColumbus, J.T., Friar, E.A., J.M. Porter, L.M. Prince, & M.G. Simpson, eds.In English

This volume and its companion, MONOCOTS, COMPARATIVE BIOLOGY AND EVOLUTION, EXCLUDING POALES, contain papers presented at the Third International Conference on the Comparative Biology of the Monocotyledons, Monocots III, and the Fourth International Symposium on Grass Systematics and Evolution, Grasses IV, hosted by Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Claremont, California, in 2003. This work contains 42 original scientific papers from the conferences whose goals were, in part, to offer a strong core program in systematics while incorporating newer, relevant fields such as developmental biology and genomics, and to address the timely and challenging issue of data integration.

A Revision of the Southern African Genus Babiana (Iridaceae: Crocoideae)P. Goldblatt & J. ManningIn English

In this systematic revision of the southern African genus BABIANA, 88 species are recognized, a substantial increase over the 61 in G. J. Lewis’s 1959 monograph. The increase reflects, in part, the transfer of the genera ANACLANTHE and ANTHOLYZA, each with a single species, to BABIANA, the discovery of some 20 new species, and the application of a taxonomic philosophy strongly oriented toward the biology of the plants, which led to the adoption of a narrower species concept than Lewis entertained. BABIANA, as now constituted, is a genus of southern Africa, and largely one of the winter-rainfall zone of western South Africa and southwestern Namibia.

Revised Classification of the OnagraceaeMonogr. Syst. Bot. Missouri Bot. Gard 83W. L. Wagner, P. C. Hoch, & P. H. RavenIn English

Recent molecular phylogenetic analyses in the plant family Onagraceae support the need for revisions in the family classification. In this paper we briefly survey the history of generic and suprageneric classification in Onagraceae, summarize our knowledge of the morphological and molecular variation in the family in a phylogenetic context, and propose a revised classification that reflects that phylogeny. included is a species level synopsis of the family, incorporating all nomenclatural changes and combinations but not full species-level synonymy. We provide descriptions of all taxa recognized for the first time, as well as tribes, genera, sections, subsections, and series. In this treatment, we recognize 22 genera in the family, subdivided into two subfamilies, subfam. Ludwigioideae (only LUDWIGIA) and subfam. Onagroideae (the other genera), and the latter into six tribes, two with only one genus each, three with two genera each, and one (tribe Onagreae) with 13 genera. Chromosome numbers and breeding system information are summarized, as is the geographical and ecological distribution of each taxon. For each group we list the included taxa.

Thesaurus Woolwardiae, Orchids of the Marquis of Lothian

The nineteenth-century botanist and illustrator Florence Woolward was commissioned by the Marquis of Lothian to paint his living orchid collection, renowned for its diversity at that time, at Newbattle Abbey near Edinburgh, Scot-land. Sixty of these life-sized gouache watercolor paintings are reproduced in the THESAURUS WOOLWARDIAE, in a collaboration between the Missouri Botanical Garden and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The series is divided into four elephant (11.75 x 16.5 inches) folios, which are gum-bound and printed on archival paper with archival inks. Each part may be kept intact or dissembled, with 15 individual prints for framing. Text introduction to the Lothian collection and the Woolward paintings as well as information on the particular orchids is provided by taxonomic specialists in the family.

Intact folios ($50) or individual prints are available for sale ($15); For single prints, refer to the orchid names below when ordering. All images are available online to preview.

The Ferns of Great Britain and IrelandBy Thomas Moore, Edited by John Lindley, Nature Printed by Henry BradburyPublished by Bradbury and Evans, Whitefriars, 1855

THE FERNS OF GREAT BRITAN AND IRELAND contains scientific text and fifty-one plates, unusual in their accuracy and three-dimensional quality, depicting all the varieties of ferns native to the British Isles and Ireland. The images were created by an invention that utilized actual plants in the printing process.

Around 1850 the Imperial Printing Office in Vienna, under the direction of Alois Auer, pioneered the process of pressing a dried plant specimen between a highly polished lead plate and a steel one; the resulting impression in the lead was electroplated to become an intaglio printing plate that was inked by hand. Printed in two colors on a thick sheet of soft paper that took the impression of the plant from the metal plate, the nature-printed image was even able to replicate the thickness of some stems and fronds.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is offering these fine art reproduction prints for sale. The funds generated are used for the Library’s Rare Book Digitization Proj-ect. The Digitization Project’s goal is to make significant Botanical volumes avail-able online to an international public, while preserving the rare and old fragile books and binding themselves.
