In Our Diocese

Father Jim and Sylvia Verdonk will be in attendance at the Rite of Election at the Cathedral this Sunday afternoon, February 21. Second-year candidates

will meet on Zoom at 7:30 p.m. only. The focus of our discussions will be: the Beatitudes, and the Cardinal and Theological Virtues. Contact Sylvia if you have not received the discussion questions in advance by text or email.

Due to a scheduling conflict with NET Ministries, the virtual Confirmation retreat has been postponed to March 14. All candidates currently registered in the Confirmation preparation program should plan to attend this retreat. The time remains the same, 12:30 - 4:00 PM. This is one of two retreats required by our diocese prior to Confirmation. It will be a terrific after-noon. More detailed information will be coming. Plan now to attend this AMAZING retreat on March 14.

"Stand fast, therefore, in this conduct and follow the example of the Lord, ‘firm and unchangeable in faith, lovers of the brotherhood, loving each other, united in

truth,’ helping each other with the mildness of the Lord, despising no man."

~ St. Polycarp, feast day February 23

I recently looked up the original meaning

of the word "Lent." I had heard it before,

and knew that its original meaning wasn't

religious, but I couldn't remember what it

was. Well, the internet to the rescue, I

found what I was looking for at https://

aleteia.org/2018/02/05/the-surprisingly-

secular-meaning-of-the-word-lent/. (I'd never seen this

website before. It looks like a good source for Catholic

thoughts and reflections.)

The word Lent refers to the season of spring. It comes from

a word meaning "lengthening" which is what the daytime is

doing at this time of the year. The official Latin name for the

Church's penitential season before Easter was quadragesi-

ma. (Try to say THAT ten times fast!). So, since this

penitential season corresponds to the transition into the

season of spring, and because the word "lent" is a lot easier

to say than quadragesima, this penitential season gradually

picked up the name Lent in English.

Ah, but the name isn't entirely devoid of religious meaning.

As the article goes on to say "Nevertheless, spiritual

writers have pointed out how this identification is

spiritually beneficial. Lent is generally seen as a time

of spiritual renewal, a type of “spiritual spring,” when

a soul is renewed in fervor and cleansed of all

impurities."

May we experience this Lent as a spiritual springtime!

Hunger In Our World Jesus told us that whatever we did for one of these least brothers of his we did for him. Reflect on the challenge of glob-

al hunger—it is a reality for millions of our sisters and broth-ers. What will you do to support the hungry in our commu-nity and around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org to learn more. You make pick up your Rice Bowl on the table in the South Lobby any time the church is open.

Donations For El Sitio, El Salvador We will continue to accept donations to help improve the health, education, and economic stability of this communi-ty. Simply put “El Sitio” on the memo line of your check and drop it off at the parish office, sliding it under the door or through the office window. If you have any questions please contact Bobbie Otto at 269-313-1761.

Are you a Jeopardy fan? Our group of 4th-7th graders played Religious Faith Formation Jeopardy last week. Our topics: Mark, The 10 Commandments, Fruits, More Fruits, and Lent. Our winner was Christopher Saucedo with 2100 points and a close second place was Lauren Grant. If you would like to take the challenge and see how well you do, here is the link: https://jeopardylabs.com/play/catholic-religious-faith-formation-jeopardy. Let me know how well you did and what you think! Email me at [email protected].

The Diocese of Kalamazoo is blessed with many senior priests. Although retired they continue to serve through prayer, assisting in parishes with Masses and confes-sions, visiting nursing homes and countless other ways. The special collection on March 7th will support our dioce-san priests’ retirement fund. Please prayerfully consider your gift. Special envelopes are located on the bulletin shelves for your convenience.

A Good Lenten Read Deacon John Lorhstorfer

Lent is always a good time to do some spiritual reading and I would highly recommend “Spiritual Direction“ by Henri Nouwen (1932-1996). He was a priest, teacher, and great spiritual writer who authored over 39 books in his lifetime. My personal favorites are “Return of the Prodigal Son,” “Reaching Out,” and “The

Genesee Diary.” During Lent we will reflect with some excerpts from “Spiritual Direction”.

We will begin with Nouwen’s reflection that “the decisive moment of Jesus’ public life was his baptism when he heard the divine affirmation, ‘You are my Beloved on whom my favor rests.’ Likewise, we need to hear these words of God spoken to us; that each of us is called by God to be the “Beloved.” When Jesus was tempted in the desert to turn stones into bread, to jump from the temple, and to claim all power and move him away from his core identity, Jesus returned to the center because he knew that he was the Beloved of God. And no matter what challenges arose for Jesus, He always came back to that core identity. Likewise, we will encounter many challenges and temptations to become something that we are not, but we always must remember that we, too, are the Beloved of God.”

What a great way to begin our Lenten journey!

Join Our School Family! We are currently enrolling Preschool and Kindergarten aged children of school families and St. Basil church families for Fall 2021. Please contact the school for more information:[email protected], or [email protected], or call the school office, 269-637-3529. We would love to have you join us. Come be a Basil Bear!

Winter has certainly reared its cold and snowy head! The bitter cold has kept us staying warm indoors, doing a varie-ty of activities to plow through February (no pun intended).

We wrapped up our Catholic Schools Week activities a couple days late due to a snow day (of course, there is ALWAYS a snow day during CSW!). Students completed their door decorations as part of the theme Celebrate Our Nation. We actually made it a friendly contest, with color day passes on the line. Our Kindergarten and our 7th and 8th grade classrooms tied for the win.

We also celebrated Valentine's day with classroom activities, cards, and goodies. There were many students dressed in pink and red, which brightened up a rather dull and cloudy day.

Our Kindergarten students spent some time with Ms. Suzie, doing activities for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. This theology piece is a part of our theology program, giving young students a chance to experience our faith in a more hands-on way.

The 6th grade students have been learning about ratios and scale models. After designing a dog house and drawing it to scale, they made scale models of their designs. I see some pretty lucky pooches in their futures!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Please stay safe and warm; it sounds like it is going to be another cold one! Camille DeLano, Principal

Thank you for all the kind thoughts and prayers during my recent health issues and surgery. I have always been a firm believer in the power of prayer, and I am very grateful

for the support of my parish family. God bless you all! Tom Mielke
