Fuji Xerox has designed the Color 1000 Press to bridge the divide between digital and offset
printing, with a brand new engine incorporating the latest print and dry ink technology
With 147 new patents, Fuji Xerox believes it has made huge technological advances while
building on the best of existing print technology. Its new production printer, the Color 1000
Press takes the best features of products such as the 700 Digital Colour Press (DCP), the iGen4110 and the DocuColor 8000AP, slotting slots nicely into the companys production portfolio.
Fuji Xerox now has three full production print presses, designing the Color 1000 Press to
combine the high-end print quality of the iGen family with the smaller spatial footprint of a
700DCP.
Neil Whittaker, managing director, Fuji Xerox New Zealand, says, This machine is set to make a
huge splash in the market. Digital and offset printing technology has been merging closer

together at an extraordinary rate and the technology we have introduced in this machine will
only serve to speed up the process.
Human beings process an increasing proliferation of images every waking minute of every day,
making the fight to capture attention more difficult and more competitive. Fuji Xerox says that
the Color 1000 Press gives production houses a creative edge taking technology that offsetprinters regularly use and applying it to a cost efficient digital machine. The Color 1000 Press
contains the companys latest technological advances, which highlight the improvements in dry
ink and machine structure that the company says will allow digital production houses to
produce creative images with techniques previously only seen within the offset market.
Superior image quality
Alistair Egan, product manager PSBG, Fuji Xerox New Zealand, says the Color 1000 Press
represents a paradigm shift in printing; it is a digital machine with the technological ability to
compete with offset print machines. The latest advancement, Clear Dry ink, works like CMYK
dry ink but without the colour pigmentation. ClearD
ry ink can be applied as a flood coat (to theentire page) or selectively applied to the document, right down to individual pixels at 256 grey
levels.
Egan says, Dry ink enhances the creativity, depth and impact of a document. Golds and silvers
appear more metallic, and liquids have a sheen to them that makes it seem as though they are
right in front of you. Dry ink is going to change the print industry and in turn, the way images
are viewed.
On a basic level, Clear Dry ink can be used to print over a coloured ink, enhancing the colour
and creating a gloss overlay. However, it can also be used to create watermarks and other
colourless images to support a design. The company believes that this feature, not previouslyavailable on a digital production press, has allowed digital printing to step further into the
offset market.
Traditionally, printing on textured stock has caused many difficulties. The colour consistency
can become irregular because the volume of ink that passes over the hills of the stock is not
always consistent with the volume that reaches the valleys. Due to the low melting
temperature of the new dry ink and the new transfer and fusing technology, Clear Dry ink does
not have this problem and provides a smoother matte finish with stronger colour consistency.
D
ry ink not only prints well on textured stock but it has the ability to create its own texture, from a two-dimensional page to a three-dimensional image. Egan says that this is where the
ability to select pixels on which to apply the ink can be advantageous. The Color 1000 Press
prints the ink on to a specific section of an image and then when re-printed numerous times the
section is raised without any discolouration or major visible difference to the image. A change is
only noticed when the image is touched. For example, consider the texture of a basketball:
raised and bumpy. Using dry ink, the Color 1000 Press can create that same texture by applying
the ink in a pattern and raising sections of the image, providing a tactile sensation.
5/12/2018 Report Xerox C1000 - slidepdf.com
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/report-xerox-c1000 8/11
Egan says, This ink provides designers with a great benefit, particularly with direct mail pieces.
The idea of being able to feel a texture, similar to that of the actual object is completely new to
the digital print industry and will give production houses more freedom with their printing and
design.
As well as the advancement with Clear Dry ink, the Color 1000 Press has a 2400 x 2400 dpiresolution from the patented laser technology with 5,760,000 addressable dots. Egan says that
this ensures exceptional image quality and fine detail for smooth colour sweeps and crisp text.
Colour alignment discrepancies can compromise image quality in production presses. Caused by
any movement occurring within the machine or along the paper path, these discrepancies have
often caused headaches for print professionals. To combat this, the Color 1000 Press uses a
technology called IReCT, software that allows pixels to be digitally moved and/or adjusted
before being transferred on to media resulting in a clean image instead of an unaligned image,
which can appear to have a shadow.
Eco-friendly and cost efficient
LARGE-scale production printing companies print hundreds of thousands of pages per month.
The ink used in printing those pages can often contain solvents or harmful chemicals, requiring
a significant amount of energy to melt and to adhere the ink to the paper. The Color 1000
Press is the first high-end production press to use Emulsion Aggregate-Eco Toner (EA-Eco Toner),
a specific dry ink created in a controlled process combining slow-melting and sharp-melting
polyester. The result has a lower melting point than standard inks, requiring 25 percent less
energy. In addition, 45-50 percent less ink is required per printed page. Oil-free, the EA-Eco
toner benefits printers by using a wax to create a finish that adjusts to match the gloss levels of
the paper.
Fuji Xerox takes great pride in its reputation for developing sustainable machines and cites this
dry ink is a perfect example. However, these machines also need to be economically viable for
the customer and the company has aimed the Color 1000 Press squarely at that target, with
each printed page costing similar to a traditional four colour offset press with a run size
between 1500 to 3000 sheets.
Egan says, Despite the Color 1000 Press being a high-end production press, our aim is to make
it affordable for our customers. The low print-per-page cost is an example of this. This cost is
significantly lower than other machines on the market and we are keen to lead the way withthis type of affordability.
Improved productivity and efficiency
The Color 1000 Press operates at 100 pages per minute with a 0.5mm front-to-back registration.
While digital production printers appear mysterious to the lay person, with paper going in one
end and printed pages coming out the other, printer service providers who look at the

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/report-xerox-c1000 9/11
specifications of the Color 1000 Press will not feel mystified by the increase in speed. A new
feature, the belt roll fuser, makes this speed possible without losing image quality. The belt roll
fuser consists of four rolls: an internal and external heat roll, a fixing roll and a pressure roll. The
rolls are coated in Polytetrafluoroethylene (PFA) a new material developed by Fuji Xerox. The
new design increases the contact between all the moving parts and ensures that energy is
transferred more efficiently to the belt so it maintains a stable fusing temperature whentransferring the design to paper. As a result, colour is more consistent and there is a wider
range of printable colours available.
The new belt roll fuser also eliminates the need for fuser oil, allowing mixed media jobs to run
at the rated speed due to rapid heating and cooling. The belt can fit up to 11 images at any one
time. Fuji Xerox says its seamless nature enhances image quality, ensuring high impact images
at full speed.
Speed matters. Machines operating at full speed mean faster job completion, more jobs on the
floor and an increase in the printers bottom line. Fuji Xerox understands this cycle, making
increased productivity a significant focus for the Color 1000 Press. For instance, the creators of
the Color 1000 Press knew that the paper path is a vital factor in achieving the machines
operating speed of 100 pages per minute. The paper path in the Color 1000 Press is specifically
designed to be as straight as possible, resulting in not only a shorter distance for the paper to
travel but minimal curves so that machine can support heavier stocks without the risk of paper
distortion.
The Color 1000 Press possesses the ability to process stock up to 350gsm with auto duplexing,
which in turn aids efficiency, as printers can print multiple runs on different stocks within the
same machine.
Saving rollers and controlling temperature While not visible to the naked eye, paper can often end up with burr marks along the side edge
because of poor guillotining. This not only leaves the paper imperfect but also damages the
rollers in the paper path, with the burr marks leaving little indents that increase overtime,
resulting in the rollers requiring replacement more often. To solve this problem, Fuji Xerox
developed another new technology: the deburring unit. This unit sits above the paper trays and
the side edges of documents are pressed between two metal rollers to flatten them out.
One of the biggest differences between a production quality press and an office multifunction
device is the temperature generated. A production press requires specific temperature settings,
something not generally available in an office environment. The Color 1000 Press bridges thisgap with its Air Assist technology. The machine has four air blowers, which results in a
significant increase in airflow. Positioned next to the fusing process, the cooling unit cools down
the sheet, which has been heated up by the fuser. This minimises paper distortion and ensures
the paper does not stick to other documents on the tray through melted ink adhering together.
Embrace new technology and grow business

1000 Press is a production print machine that can enable production houses to grow their
businesses. The Color 1000 Press enhances the Fuji Xerox portfolio and displays the companys
willingness to embrace new technology. Fuji Xerox cites the Clear Dry ink and EA-Eco toner as
great examples of this and also of how technology continues its evolution in the print industry.
The dry ink used in the Colour 1000 now behaves more like liquid ink in traditional printing and
the construction of the Color 1000 Press also favours a more condensed style, straightening outthe paper path while keeping the footprint small.
Fuji Xerox continues to stake its claim as a leader in the digital print production market. The
arrival of the Color 1000 Press makes this crystal clear.
ROCHESTER, N.Y., April 20, 2010 In a world where high def has quickly become the norm and paper
flies through printers at ever increasing speeds, researchers at Xerox Corporation (NYSE:XRX) and Fuji
Xerox have developed technology to meet the challenge of printing high definition images at speeds of
80 to 100 pages per minute.
Five new Xerox innovations under the hood set these new digital presses apart from anything ever
designed, by addressing a print providers need for vibrant image quality and the ability to complete
complex jobs faster.
With paper moving at these speeds, there are countless engineering challenges along the way, said
David Mueller, engineering manager of the new Xerox Color 800/1000 Presses. The technologies we
developed, especially the new fuser and clear toner, really push the envelope in terms of how these
presses perform.
The new technologies include:
y Clear EA toner This transparent dry ink is a new formula of Xeroxs ultra low-melt EA (Emulsion
Aggregation) toner. Developed jointly by researchers at Fuji Xerox and the Xerox Research
Centre of Canada, it uses no fuser oil and gives images a smooth offset-like finish. The clear
toner also adds visual variety. Highlighted images appear to pop off the page, and customers
can use the feature to draw attention to headlines, variable text, photos, logos or images and
create a range of artistic digital effects including watermarks.y Long-life photoreceptor The presses feature a new photoreceptor with a protective overcoat
that lasts twice as long as conventional technologies, As a result, the photoreceptor, which is the
light-sensitive drum used to transfer the image to paper, can withstand making up to 800,000
impressions.
y Seamless Intermediate Belt Transfer System (IBT) This technology makes it easier for
operators to set up jobs on varying sized media. It also makes it possible to add a fifth station for
clear toner.
5/12/2018 Report Xerox C1000 - slidepdf.com
http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/report-xerox-c1000 11/11
y New Fuser The Belt Roller Fuser (BRF) has a set of heated rollers that heats the fuser belt and
melts or fuses the toner into the paper. This new fuser lasts twice as long as previous fusers and
transfers heat more efficiently. As a result, the presses deliver stable image quality as well as
extended service life.
y Inline Belt Cooling Printing at high speed does not allow time for paper to cool while it travels
through the system. This high temperature can cause toner and paper to stick together in
finishing devices. Researchers solved this problem by lowering the temperature of the paper as
it passes by cooling belts.
These new digital presses are a great example of what Xeroxs ingenuity and collaborative innovation
can achieve, said Sophie Vandebroek, Xeroxs chief technology officer and president of the Xerox
Innovation Group. Our research and engineering teams in the United States and Canada, along with
our joint venture partner, Fuji Xerox, in Japan, invented and commercialized breakthrough technology
that opens up an array of profitable business opportunities for our customers.
