The dry tailings pack into the rods jamming them and stooping penetrat ion. Once this well c: r a i. ned zone has been oassed it is possible to continue d r i 3 l j. r, c: without Duliing the drill string until the hole is romoii et ed. As each hole was completed, th^ on. 11 r^ods were extracted using a portable electric winch mounted on a tripod. The sample was removed from the rod?-, in 5 f not sections, laid onto a tar o, logged, bagged, tapped and sriipoed to Lakefield Research for analysis.
Albhough there fxiHts the nossioility of contamination from caving in the initial 20 feet of some holes, is is the opinion of the writer that this problem is small because hole walls remained intact after exit and entry with the drill rods.
5. DRILLING RESULTS A RECOMMENDATIONS
A total of 3 holes ranging in deoth from 10 to 28 feet were drilled on the property. These drill holes are located on picketed grid lines at 40O foot spacings, see Map 1. Copies of detailed logs can be found in tr,e Aopendix.
In general #.;he samoles collected were silty clays with a relatively hign water content. Few visible minerals were noted in the tailings because of the fine grinding required to release the gold in the Kirkland Lake ores.
Tonnages and grades of ootential reserves have been calculated by Peter Bevan and Richard Sproule for this portion of the Sylvanite tailings. The methodology of these calculations is explained in Aopendix A.
Below is a summary of drill results, tonnage and calculations for the tailings contained on these claims.

APPENDIX B
Calculation of Tailings Reserves in the Kirkland Lake Area
In July, 1985 the writer was commissioned by C. von Hessert s
Associates to undertake an estimate of the reserves of five tailings
areas in the Kirkland Lake District. The five tailings areas are
the Toburn, Wright - Hargreaves, Sylvanite, Teck - Hughes and Lake
Shore South Basin. The tailings have been tested by drill holes
bored on 400 to 600 foot centres, through mill fines and generally into underlying peat. The recovered material from these holes was
bagged and sampled at five foot intervals, The samples were sent to Lakefield research who made up weighted composites for each hole. An exception to this was for the Toburn and Wright - Hargreaves
areas where individual samples were assayed and the writer weighted
the average of each hole according to core lengths.
Method of Approach
On the drill plans of each tailings area, the area of influence\
around each hole was determined from the mid points of lines drawn
between holes and a series of polygons or rectangles were constructed. The areas of the polygon were measured by planimeter. While those of the rectangles were determined by measuring two sides with a scale. The areas of internal islands was subtracted from the
total. The depth of each' hole, which included a small portion of peat, multiplied by the area gave the volume of material. Using a tonnage factor to 18.85 cubic feet per ton the volume was converted to short tons, The grades in most cases were reported in grams of
gold per metric ton which was converted into ounces per short ton using a factor of 34.28 for the purposes of these calculations. The
combined ounces were calculated and the average weighted grade of each tailings area was determined. A summary of the results is as
follows.
-l-
Tailings Area l Short Tons l Grade l Contained
________:,. . l^^^.^^^^^^j. .QZ/ton l ounces
Toburn 1,471,000 0.027 l 39,400
Wright -l II - Hargreaves | 1,805,000 l 0.021 | 37,000
Sylvanite l 5,649,000 l 0.015 l 86,700
Teck - Hughes | 6,212,000 | 0.020 | 121,700
Lakeshore -l | |
- South Basin 122,410,000 | 0.015 | 327,000
Areas of Concern
Hole ̂ depths
The volume of tailings material has been calculated from the depths
of each given hole. This does not however, take into account the
topography of the basement nor does it consider that the depths of the tailings at the margins would approach or be equal to zero. Therefore it seems likely that the volumes for marginal blocks have
been over estimated.
Hole grid
The spacing between holes varies from 400 to 600 feet which in this writer's opinion is too wide. However, this wide grid spacing may be justified by the sampling results which show a remarkable'
consistency.
-2-
Sampling
Composite sampling of wet or moist tailings material was undertaken by Lakefield. A weighted amount from each sample was. taken and, because of the nature of this material, it is of some concern whether this material would be representative or not. Being wet, mixing to provide a homogeneous sample is very difficult. It is understood that drying out the material may cause a loss in gold.
T o n n a g e f a c t o r
The tonnage factor of 18.85 cubic feet per short ton is considered to be too low but would be acceptable for dry tailings. Since these tailings are wet, it is the writer's experience that a figure of 22 cubic feet per short ton would be a more realistic tonnage factor.
R ejEejr e ne e j?o i n t s*,
It is recommended that reference points be surveyed in on the
various plans of the tailing. It is understood that the claims which cover the tailings are largely patented and that claim posts are for the most part nonexistent. However it should be possible to project the boundary line between Teck and Lebel Townships onto an least three of the areas, namely Wright Hargreaves, Toburn and Lakeshore South.
An attempt was made to divide the various tailings areas into their respective claims but without reference points on the plan, the resulting outlines are, at best, inaccurate. The only one for which the reserves have been split by claims is Toburn, which is a
relatively simple one since approximately half of the strike length
of the tailings appears on each claim. The western part of Toburn contains three times the reserve of the eastern half due to tapering of the area to the east and much greater depths to the west.
