1. Introduction

Environmental education and awareness helps students to understand the holistic nature of the

environment through interdisciplinary and problem solving approach. Awareness could be

created among students on municipal solid waste management by using the techniques like

“Learn with Fun”. These education methodologies necessitate a change in their attitude

towards waste generation and also motivate them to engage in waste management gradually. It

also enables school administrations for more innovative activities and strengthens their roles to

take up environmental programmes or school projects like source segregation, organic

composting, vermin-composting, paper recycling, etc within their school premises. They also

help by becoming agents of change for the city.

The awareness workshop was conducted by GIZ through its consultants Paradigm

Environmental Strategies Ltd. for School children at YSR Bhavan, MCT (Municipal Corporation

Tirupati), Tirupati to educate students and provide them with holistic understanding of Solid

Followed by Commissioners speech, Dr. Geetanjali, Health Officer addressed the gathering

about the basics of solid waste management system.

After that Ms. Naina Shah requested all the school children to introduce themselves. She asked

them to introduce themselves via an innovative method for introduction, led by her. One ball had

been prepared with the pieces of approximately 2 m length thread and circulated among the

students. As the ball unfolded, each student had to speak about problem related to MSW faced by

them and present a solution to the problem. Students were very much aware about waste

management and disposal methodologies. They gave suggestions like levying fines on persons, if

they throw waste on roads. The students were very interested to know more minute details of the

waste management, as it was a very new area of learning to them. After being given the

explanation, they were very receptive to the idea of source segregation of waste and ready to take

home the message to their parents.

After this drawing and painting competitions were held for the school children. The drawings

and paintings were very impressive and creative. Then five students who had made good

drawings/ paintings were picked up for playing the Snake and Ladder game. The Snake and

Ladder game is a unique informative game which was developed to educate the school children

about the importance of waste management and students were very excited about playing the

game. The children were made to play the game by rolling the dice and playing on the huge

canvas of snake and ladder and simultaneously they also learned about the methods of waste

management and the negative aspects of waste generation. The children read out the messages

written on the game board every time they landed on a square with a message and they were also

explained the significance of each message. Students understood about the value of waste and

the importance of waste management.

After this Ms. Naina Shah explained about the content of the school kit which contains 4 books

on waste management to the participating teachers and resource persons of respective schools.

Two sets of school kits along with the Deepa – the Sanitation book was presented to each school.

One set of Snake and Ladder game was presented to the 4 NSSI (National School Sanitation

Initiative) schools for participating actively in the baseline survey conducted by GIZ. The

participants were asked to repeat the similar exercise when they go back to schools to the

remaining school children in respective schools.

Ms. Shah then took the feedback from students and teachers. Both the teachers and students were

most impressed with the Snake and Ladder game and it was also observed from the students

feedback that their knowledge on the importance of solid waste management system had

increased.

At the end vote of thanks was given by Mr. Rajesh Kumar C.R. who thanked all the participants.

And it was followed by snacks to all the participants.

Day 2: 6th

March 2012

Mr. Kashinath welcomed all the high school children and teachers on 06/03/12 and briefed about

the objectives of the workshop. Day 2 of the training was more activity oriented.

After that Ms. Naina Shah requested all the school children to introduce themselves. The

introduced was conducted by the innovative method for of circulating a ball of approximately 2

m length thread and circulated it amongst the students. As the ball unfolded, each student

introduced himself/ herself, speak about problem related to MSW faced by them and also

presented a solution for the problem. Students were very much aware about waste management

and disposal methodologies. They were suggesting that to fine the person if he/she is throwing

waste on road. The students were very interested to know more minute details of the waste

management, as it was a very new area of learning to them.

After that they were asked to write slogans and speak on the topic of the solid waste management

system. The slogans written by students were appealing and speeches were informative and

impressive.

After that they played the activity called “Shrinking Resource”. The objective of this game was

to make students aware that “with increasing population and shrinking resources the demand for

resources will grow to enormous proportions”. For this game group of four students each were

made and named earth, water, forest, Air etc. One newspaper was given to each group. Each

group has to open the center page of the newspaper and this was defined as their resource. All

groups were instructed to spread the resource (newspaper page) on the floor and all four students

were asked to stand on it comfortably. They were indeed able to do it. After that, they were

instructed to fold the page into two and all the four students were asked to stand on it again. They

were able to do it but had to come closer. With further folding the space or resource got smaller

and smaller and there was a scramble amongst the students to have a foot on the resource.

Activity of shrinking resources was followed by the Snake and Ladder game. This game was the

most interesting part as all the students enjoyed as they learnt the ill effects as well as the good

practices of waste management while playing.

Students understood about the value of waste and the importance of waste management. They

were also told to do an activity to “Earn your pocket money, by putting value to recyclable

waste” , the student have to segregate the waste at home and collect all the recyclables and sell it

to the Kabadiwala on weekends. They could collect the money for the same and keep it as their

pocket money.

The GIZ school kit, including the Deepa book, were presented to each participating schools. The

Snake and Ladder game was given to all the NSSI schools. The participants were asked to repeat

the similar exercise when they go back to schools to the remaining school children in respective

schools. It was a good learning experience for the student’s and the teachers and for the

organizers as well.

At the end vote of thanks was given by Mr. Ravindra G.V who thanked all the participants. This

was followed by snacks to all the participants.

5. Feedback/ Outcome

Students and teachers were trained about basics of solid waste management practices and

enabled to carry forward the further training programme in their respective schools.

We got an overwhelming response from the teachers and the students. The students and teachers

were very impressed with our school kit. They wanted to take it forward and share with other

students in their school. Other than NSSI schools that were not given the Snake and Ladder game

set were requesting us for the same.

On day 2 workshop we got good feedback from the secondary schools students about Solid

Waste Management issues, its ill effects and plausible solutions (including waste management,

rainwater harvesting, sewage treatment, judicious use of water, best out of waste, environmental

pollution, etc.) It was more of an interactive session as the children were well aware about the

issues of SWM. They were very enthusiastic and participated with full zest.

Some of the students were aware of the sustainable development issues as they gave ideas of

SWM in form of slogan, poster making, essays, debates, etc and the teachers were told to

organise such activities in schools more frequently so as to sensitize the students about SWM

issues.
