It is with great pride that we share the Northstar Academy 2013-2014 Annual Report. Each year we pause and reflect on the impact that we have made on the lives of our students and our community and in this year’s report we share examples of the strides that we are making in our mission of preparing each student for a meaningful life both while they are a part of the Northstar family and after they leave us to pursue their next phase.

We closed the year with 85 students — which is approaching the 2012 Strategic Plan goal of 90. Of particular note was the continued growth of the Lower School which grew to 15 — also a Strategic Planning goal. Enrollment also reflected the growing geographical reach that the School has developed in recent years. In the 2013-2014 academic year, our student body included students from nine counties and cities in addition to Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and the City of Richmond. In fact we have a number of students who travel over 40 miles each way to attend Northstar.

Perhaps the greatest initiative of the year was the decision to launch Northstar’s new transition program — the Career Academy — with classes beginning in the 2014-15 academic year. This program is a very important step in the School’s goal to provide the skills that will help our students to be self-reliant adults after Northstar. Planning for the program has been months in development and thanks to the generous philanthropic support of our donors including foundations, civic organizations, and individuals, this very important program will become a reality. Through collaboration with the VCU Research and Rehabilitative Training Center, Northstar will offer a unique two-year academic program that couples classroom instruction with job shadowing and internships for up to 25 students. The Career Academy will be a significant area of concentration next year as we refine the curriculum and expand the program’s reach.

Our successes are possible only because of the dedication of our faculty, staff and Board and the support of our incredibly generous financial benefactors. We are deeply grateful for the wide range of support provided by Northstar’s donors whether

• Donations to GRASP to provide scholarships to 6 students, • Gifts to start new programs like the Career Academy or• Gifts to the Annual Fund and support of fundraising events that are critical to our operations.

These combined efforts enable us to meet our mission of providing the academic, social and life skills that help each Northstar student discover his abilities and expand his horizons. We thank each of you for the role that you play in that effort.

With warmest regards,

On behalf of our Northstar students, parents, and staff, we would like to thank each of you for your support over the past year. As I reflect each year, I am amazed at the many inspiring and wonderful successes that occur for our students each day. Whether it is watching a student skipping to their LindaMood Bell (LMB) reading class because they now enjoy learning to read and are experiencing success, or hearing the student who says as he comes to class, “I love visualizing and verbalizing”, each day is filled with wonderful moments like these. The successes our students experience are made possible by a talented and dedicated team of teachers. Your support not only makes these successes possible but it allows us to reach more students and to expand and improve our programs.

Over this last year we have continued to focus on our programs specific to Northstar. We have extended our LMB program by adding a separate, dedicated class period in which we offer small group instruction to our students who need additional support in reading. In this way we continue to stay true to our mission meeting the needs of our students. We have now added LMB’s “On Cloud Nine” to our math curriculum. We offer “On Cloud Nine” math to our middle and lower school students thus extending the LMB strategies even further into our curriculum. All of our math teachers have received training in LMB “On Cloud Nine” math, and most of our teachers have been trained in the LMB reading strategies.

This has also been a gratifying year. We received a substantial grant challenge and were able to raise the remaining funds through foundations, and through individual donors. This enabled us to launch the Northstar Career Academy in the 2014-15 school year. It is our hope that by offering a career technical education option for students with disabilities that we are being innovative and responsive not only to the needs of our students, but to the needs of all students with disabilities and to the needs of our community. It is our goal for this program to become a viable regional opportunity for all young people with disabilities ages 16-22 to learn a skill that will enable them to be successfully employed and to become contributing members of our society.

We hope you realize how grateful we are for your amazing support and we promise to be good stewards of your generosity. Please know your gifts make a positive difference for our students each and every day.

With gratitude,

Dr. Patricia WestHead of School

While students attend Northstar, we measure their success not only by educational and social advances, but more importantly by how these improvements foster new opportunities for productive and fulfilling lives after graduation. We prepare students for college or vocational programs, but also recognize that these paths may not be right for all students. Based on recent data:

100% of our seniors graduate

65% of our graduates continue their education at two or four-year colleges

19% of our graduates enter vocational programs

16% enter the workforce.
