VISIT OF GANDHI ASHRAM

The second day of conference was enriched by visit of historical places of Ahmedabad. It was a

memorable visit for all foreign delegates who came with the dream to visit land of Mahatma

Gandhi. We visited Gandhi Ashram in the evening when technical sessions were over.

ABOUT GANDHI ASHRAM

On his return from South Africa, Gandhi’s first Ashram in India was established in the Kochrab

area of Ahmedabad on 25 May 1915. The Ashram was

then shifted on 17 June 1917 to a piece of open land

on the banks of the river Sabarmati. The Sabarmati

Ashram (also known as Harijan Ashram) was home to

Mohandas Gandhi from 1917 until 1930 and served as

one of the main centers of the Indian freedom

struggle. Originally called the Satyagraha Ashram,

reflecting the movement toward passive resistance

launched by the Mahatma, the Ashram became home to the ideology that set India free.

Sabarmati Ashram named for the river on which it sits.

Foreign delegates carried memory of this historical

place in the form of ‘Charkha’ which symbolizes the

self-dependency. We also tried to learn the functioning

and working of Real Charkha. It was a great experience

for all visitors.

VISIT OF ADALAJ STEPWELL

From Gandhi Ashram, we moved to another historical place of Ahmedabad – Adalaj Stepwell

which is popularly known as ‘Adalaj ki Vav’ among local

people.

ABOUT ADALAJ STEPWELL

Set in the quiet village of Adalaj, this vav has served as a

resting place for hundreds of years for many pilgrims and

caravans along their trade routes. Built in 1499 by Queen

Rudabai, wife of the Vaghela chief, Veersinh, this five-

storey stepwell was not just a cultural and utilitarian space, but also a spiritual refuge.
