ExecutiveSummaryDrakeUniversity’scommitmenttocommunityisdeep-seated.Communityengagement,thepublicgood,andservice-learning,haveallbeenarticulatedasintegralpartsofourstrategicplansofthepastandpresent.Asdemonstratedbyourinspirationstatement,“Togetherwetransformlivesandstrengthencommunities”,weseektobean“engageduniversity”thatpreparesthenextgenerationofcivicmindedprofessionals.BysigningtheCampusCompactCivicActionStatement(https://compact.org/actionstatement/)inFebruary2016,PresidentEarlF.MartinaffirmedDrake’scommitmentto:

1. Empowerfaculty,staff,studentsandpartnerstoco-createmutuallyrespectfulpartnershipsinpursuitofajust,equitable,andsustainablefutureforcommunitiesbeyondthecampus.

2. Preparestudentsforlivesofengagedcitizenship,withthemotivationandcapacitytodeliberate,act,andleadinpursuitofthepublicgood.

CommitmenttoCommunityDrakeUniversity’sMissionistopreparestudentsformeaningfulpersonallives,professionalaccomplishmentsandresponsibleglobalcitizenshipandourcommitmenttocommunityisembodiedwithinvariouspartsofourmissionexplication:[3]LearningispervasiveatDrake.Ittakesplaceinclassroomsandlibraries….Butitalsooccursduring...volunteerengagement[6]Drakegraduatesdistinguishthemselvesamongtheirprofessionalcolleaguesasmodelsofresponsible,ethicalandcollaborativeleadership,andareknownfortheircommitmenttothegreatergood,nomatterwhattheirvocation.[7]Weallseeourselvesascitizensoftheworld,andwefosterinourstudentsinterculturalsensitivityandanactiveawarenessoftheirrelationshiptothemanycommunitiesofwhichtheyareapart,includingthelocal,regional,national,andinternational.Ourstudentstakeseriouslytheirresponsibilitytoadvancethecausesofjustice,prosperity,andpeaceandtakeeveryopportunitytodoso.

Weseektomodelengagedcitizenshipasan“engageduniversity”andourHLCAccreditation,CarnegieCommunityEngagementElectiveClassificationandmostrecentlyreleasedeconomicimpactstudyallilluminatemuchofwhatDrakeisdoingaroundcommunityengagement.Eachyear,Drakestudents,faculty,andstaffcontributemorethan2milliondollarsworthofservicetothecommunity(locally,nationally,andglobally)andweareproudofouraccomplishments.

● Morethan80%ofDrakestudentsparticipateinacommunityserviceorservice-learningexperiencebeforetheygraduate.

● Morethan25%ofourcoursesincludeservice-learningasatoolforlearning.● 68%ofDrakefacultyandstaffserveinthecommunitywithnonprofits,boards,

PlanningProcess&BaselineDataInformaldevelopmentoftheCivicActionPlanbeganspring2016whenmorethan24faculty,staffandstudentsfromavarietyofdisciplinesparticipatedinafivemonthbrainstormingsessiontoevaluateinstitutionalneedsandplanforthefutureoftheExperientialLearningCouncil.RenamedinJuly2016totheCommunityEngagedLearningCouncil,theCouncilservesasanadvisorygrouptoaccomplishthegoalofincreasingcoordination,collaboration,andsustainabilityofcommunityengagedlearningpracticesacrossthecurriculum.Mostnotablecouncilaccomplishmentsincluded:

CommunityEngagedLearningPartnersareintendedtoprepareeducatedandengagedcitizens,strengthendemocraticvaluesandcivicresponsibility,addresscriticalsocietalissues,buildcapacitywithinorganizationsand/orcontributetothepublicgood.Community‘voice’iscentraltotheplanningandimplementationofprojectsandidentifyingcommunityneedsemphasizestheinclusionofindividualsservedbylocalagencies,residentsandothercommunitystakeholders.Economic&WorkforceDevelopmentPartnersarehelpingmeettoday'sworkforcechallengesbydevelopingtomorrow'sleadersandpositiontheuniversityasacatalystforthelocaleconomy.Mutuallysupportedbusinessincubation,studentandalumniexposuretoprofessionaldevelopment,experientiallearning,mentorshipandjobopportunitiesarepossiblefociforourpartnership.

Internationalization&GlobalEngagementPartnersbuildinstitutionalcapacityandadvanceglobalandcross-culturalinitiativesthatconnectDrakeUniversitywiththeworld.Globalpartnershipsenhancestudentmobility,bothincomingandoutgoing,facultyexchange,andjointresearchandprogrammingthroughuniquecurricularandco-curricularofferings.Globalpartnershipsimproveculturalunderstandingandincreasethediversityofstudents,faculty,andstaffatDrakeUniversityanditspartnerlocationsinordertoserveasabridgetoothercultures.

PartnershipDevelopmentStrategyOnceacampuswidecommunitypartnerdefinitionhasbeenadoptedtheUniversitywillbeabletodevelopaholisticpartnershipmodelfocusedonasset-basedcommunityimpact.Service-learningisnotanappropriatestrategyformeetingeverycommunityneed,butlearningcanbeachievedthrougheveryfacetofcommunityengagement.AholisticpartnershipmodelprovidestheopportunityforsignificantstudentlearningANDincreasedcapacityfornon-profitorganizations,schoolsandneighborhoods.Impactoutcomeslikestrengthenedprogrammingforyouth,increasedaffordablehousingintheDrakeneighborhood,increasedhealth&safety,andoverallincreasedcommunitywealthcanbeachieved.Muchlikethebullseyeonadartboard,aholisticpartnershipmodelwillprovidefocusandincreasealignmentofresources.ThemodelrecognizesthatDrakehasmanycommunityconnections,butplacesemphasisonastrategythatdeepensengagementwithkeycommunitypartners.Asthecirclegraphictotherightindicates,thefocusshiftsfromquantifyingthenumberofpartnerstomeasuringtheimpactofourengagementwithpartners.

Forexample,theYoungWomen’sResourceCenter(YWRC)hashistoricallyrecruitedprominentDrakefacultyorstafftoserveascelebrityserversfortheirannualfundraisingdinner.BeyondthisonetimeeventDrake’sinvolvementwithYWRCwasepisodicatbest.Theninfall2015theExecutiveDirectorandofficeofCommunityEngagedLearningstaffstrategizedabouthowtointentionallyinvolveDrakestudentsinthepreparationsfortheir40thyearanniversary.Whatfollowedisengagementacrossmultipleentitiesattheinstitution:

Self-AssessmentIowaCampusCompactprovidedaself-assessmentrubricwhichaskedrespondentstorateDrake’scapacityonavarietyoffactorsrelatedtoInstitutionalidentity/culture,commitmentandsupport,curricular,co-curricularandscholarshipengagement,voiceandleadership,andcommunityoutreachandpartnerships.Intotal18respondents(5Faculty,8Staff,5Students)completedtheassessment.IngeneralrespondentsbelievethatDrakehasModeratetoStrongCapacityinmostareas.Respondentswhoindicated‘nocapacity’or‘noopinion’didsoinareasthatwerenotapplicabletotheirpositionattheuniversity.Forexample,studentsoftenranked‘noopinion’onitemsrelatedtoassessmentandadministration.
