Dear Members and Friends:

Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) has completed another successful year, 2013, under the leadership of board president, Mr. Vic Vena, Board of Directors, volunteers and staff.

The Chamber ’s Board of Directors understands the importance of economic development and smart growth, and has taken unprecedented steps to cultivate initiatives which will lead to regional prosperity. The Board has asked us to champion a shared vision of job and asset development, business retention and expansion, business prospect engagement, and committing resources to a vibrant, welcoming, and successful region. So, while we continue our commitment to providing the events, activities, and services that make Olean a business- and family-friendly community, we will also expand our efforts to collaborate with organizations from all sectors – public, private, governmental, and nonprofit – to craft and implement a vision of regional prosperity.

We intend to be the clear and visible catalyst for the Olean area’s future. We know that the region needs more good jobs, an attractive city center, quality housing, and the amenities that citizens have come to expect in a vibrant community, and no organization can deliver all of these things alone. We have to work together to solve our own problems and aspire to a common vision. We face many challenges, but our best days are ahead of us. We look forward to working with and for you to make our area a vibrant, thriving and prosperous community.Sincerely,

Larry Sorokes Meme Krahe YanetskoChief Executive Officer Chief Operating Officer

Membership‘13

•BY THE NUMBERS -- Chamber membership ended 2013 with 706 business members representing more than 11,519 member employees. GOACC was ranked Seventh of 50 Western New York chambers of commerce in Buffalo’s Business First. The ranking is based on number of business members.

•SIX-WEEK SEMINAR SERIES -- GOACC’s membership committee continued to host seminars every six weeks in September. Each seminar featured a topic of concern to our membership. They were held at the Chamber office at no cost for Chamber members. The seminar series began in September with the topics of Digital Photography for the Non-Digital Generation; Mission to Mars; Managing Your Time Using New Technology; Public Speaking: More Confidence, Less Stress; Wellness in the Workplace and Diffusing Tense Situations. The series will continue into 2014-2015.

•CLAMBAKE WAS OFF TO THE RACES -- Officials at GOACC announced that the 45th Annual Chamber Clambake was a great success. The clambake was held June 12th Premier Banquet Center, Olean. The Clambake was a great kickoff to the summer with fun, food, music and prizes for our 636 Chamber members and guests. Watkins Glen International brought their official pace car and NASCAR prizes! Local race tracks brought their cars and drivers to the event.

•HOME SHOW -- The 42nd Annual Greater Olean Area Home and Garden Show welcomed more than 3,569 visitors in April. Seventy-six vendors were on hand to display and demonstrate products from hot tubs, to gardening supplies, along with heating and cooling systems.

Membership‘13•GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM -- The Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate program had a 2013 sales figure of $386,500 (which was $7,000 increase over 2012’s figure of 379,400). The month of December had sales of $196,180. Businesses and residents’ support of the Chamber’s Gift Certificate program allow us to keep this program viable for the community. Sales come in via phone calls and emails from customers in Florida, New Mexico, Canada, Pennsylvania, DC, Ohio, Massachusetts purchasing gifts for residents in the Olean area, not just during the holidays but year round. The uniqueness of the program is that it encourages redeemers of the certificates to discover products and services available at businesses in our area, businesses that support the Chamber of Commerce. After all, it is good business to do business with Chamber members. GOACC instituted the Gift Certificate Program in 1995 with certificates totaling $9,000 sold and 35 member businesses participating in the program.

•GIFT CERTIFICATE PROGRAM -- The Gift Certificate program is a proven success in sales; however, possibly a more impressive figure to our Chamber businesses is the total amount redeemed in the area. In 2013, $381,970 in gift certificates were spent at over 242 various places of business. Beauty shops, restaurants, day cares, grocery stores, little shops and big department stores all benefited from the program. Approximately $97,310 was spent in 2013 on enjoying the finest of the area’s dining. From pizza and wings to surf & turf, recipients of the gift certificates took pleasure in the delectable treats at our local restaurants.

Other facts/figures include: Dept. Stores redeemed $163,210; Hair salons - $3,500; and Wine/Liquor - $8,720. All that work created an appetite and the grocery stores benefited with $53,020 in sales. Look for the GOACC Membership decal in the window of the business!

Corporate Support‘13

•CORPORATE SUPPORT -- The Corporate Sponsorship Package Program is an efficient, cost-effective way for local companies to help support GOACC’s community events program. Forty-eight companies participated and is the highest number of corporate sponsors to date. GOACC appreciates not only the sponsorship but the continued backing/confidence from these companies.

The corporate sponsors benefited with increased promotion of their companies, complimentary event tickets and show/booth space. These events included Home & Garden Show, Clambake, Taste of Olean, and Annual Dinner. They also received recognition at the Santa Claus Lane Parade as holiday light contributors.
