Odeon Entertainment have been doing a cracking job of disinterring vintage British flicks and giving them a DVD airing, and it’s certainly nice to see this offering from 1976 getting a dusting off. It’s the tale of three holidaymakers larking about on Crete (so some nice old footage there, for starters) who find themselves getting tangled up with some sort of ancient Minoan cult than involves human sacrifice and all sorts of demonic jiggery-pokery. With Donald Pleasence as a local Priest and Peter Cushing (of course) as the chief occultist, it’s got a couple of things going for it – not to mention the (haloumi) cheesiness as well! THE CONFORMIST www.paulraymond.com_71 The Conformist is widely held to be Bernardo Bertolucci’s finest film, and it’s easy to see why – the cinematography is dazzling. Set around the first half of World War II, it makes great use of the Fascist architecture of the time and tells the flashback-heavy tale of Jean Louis Trintignant’s Marcello Clerici, a well-to-do Italian who finds himself being drawn into the apparatus of the Fascist state. The plot’s too complicated to summarise here, but if you like ‘proper’ films, you’ll find plenty to keep you happy – and to win one of three copies we’ve got! Just tell us the name of Italy’s Fascist dictator and send your answers to Mayfair’s Conformist comp (or email mayfair@ paulraymond.com) by March 23rd. Remember Moviedrome from the late 80s and early 90s, with it’s rather angular presenter Alex Cox, the world expert on cult movies? Well he earned his reputation largely thanks to this film, which is just about as culty as they come! Emilio Estevez stars as punky young Otto, who finds himself working as a repo man, taking back cars on which the payments are overdue. It’s a fast lifestyle, which suite him down to the ground, but then something really weird crops up involving alien bodies and the secret services… Plenty of smart dialogue as well as the odd nod to classics like Kiss Me Deadly make this a must see movie, while the remastering and lush repackaging from Eureka are bang on the money. REPO MAN THE DEVIL’S MEN SLEEPING BEAUTY Not to be confused with the Walt Disney movie of the same title (especially if you’re planning to stick it on in front of any six year old children), this Australian flick is the thoroughly unsettling story of Lucy (a fabulous performance from Emily Browning), a student who, as if her complicated private life weren’t enough to handle, ends up applying for a job serving drinks in the buff at exclusive dinner parties-cum-orgies. Then she graduates to being a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ – drugged into unconsciousness and left naked in bed with a series of old men. They can’t have sex with her, but what are they up to? Compelling and arty at the same time – it’s an arresting combination. MF4703 p70-71 Scene.indd 71 8/2/12 12:25:25
