EXHIBIT-exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking theGeneral Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation aredocumented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed bylocal writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments madetheir way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or whenheading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate largernumbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 nowincluded wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles andbaskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags,to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which com-modities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. Awagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for localtravel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, andsome mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary anddesirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge onWednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the HeritageResearch Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, NewYork. For further information call 518-747-9108 or email [email protected].

CYBERNETICS & TOASTMASTERS - WHY YOUR BRAIN LOVES TO GET FEEDBACK.Our ability to grasp, process and respond to information about the world allows us follow apurpose. You could say its what makes us, us. So what does this have to do with Toastmasters?Cybernetics is the name given to the study of feedback and systems that use feedback, in all theirforms, HollyAnn Carbino, VP of Education stated. A key message of cybernetics is thatyou cant control something unless you have feedback. The flip side of this dictum is the promisethat with feedback, you can control anything. With the right feedback, individuals have been knownto control things as unlikely as their own heart rate or as simple as improving their performance.Evaluators and Mentors are key factors in giving members the feedback they need and deserve tohone their skills.Learn how valuable feedback is by visiting Washington County Toastmasters, which meets at the Annex II Building, next to the Washington County Cornell Cooperative ExtensionBuilding, 415 Lower Main Street, Hudson Falls, NY, on first and third Wednesdays at 7:00PM.
